I wished i lived in a more tech friendly area. I snag hella deals everytime im in St Lewis and KC but at home these dudes are asking way to much for old old gear

Im a bamboo snob, must came from all the years of fighting my ender3

ATM there is no set date that the devs have put into place.

Help me choose between two systems to run HEXOS
ubergeek replied to Jasper Slade's topic in Hardware
I also wanna point out that the first system you have posted has a lack luster motherboard, aka you wont have much room to upgrade down the line, only add a gup if needed or add a hba card to add more drives. Both will have more than enough power to accomplish more than the basic tasks in hexso . Also when it comes to the boot drive I see you are using a 1tb , this will work but will have alot of unused space just fyi a 128 or 256 will be more than plenty for this build. -
If server DIES, can plug the old pool into fresh truenas pc and it will detect it?
ubergeek replied to Duhmez's question in OS & Features
So since HexOs has started I have swapped hardware many times upgrading my system along the way without loosing anything. This includes Motherboard/cpu , HBA, Videocards ect. The one thing that would limit you from what i read on another post is compatibility with the new parts. But if you keep in mind when you set up a new motherboard youll need to make sure its on non secure boot, and if you go from a cpu with onboard graphics to a computer with out youll need to fill these compatibility issues. SO in the short answer you can swap hardware if needed , -
I run mikrotik at home. It has a single 10gsfp that branches into my main switch. They do the job for the price and if you don't mind learning their small quarks it's not a half bad choice
-
really it wouldn't allow me to use my 8tb in my all 4tb array

have you tried THIS GUIDE?

So for ZFS to work properly they have to be the same sized drives, Yes in theory a 12tb can fit in to a 16 yet the extra space will throw off the pool. At the current time drives of different sizes will not work together. Inside of truenas Ui you can force them to work with all 3 together but it will do some fighting and fussing , yet in the same time it will cause issues inside the HexOs Ui . Keep tuned in as updates come out and see if this is something that might be addressed. For the time being I would just run the 12tb in a pool if you are trying to get things going .
-
Yeah That will defiantly work, Thats what is great about this style of setup is you dont need the best of the best to keep data safe. The only pointer I would add is to get the case elevated off the ground because it looks like its near that sump point .

Thats gonna be a slick build.

So after going over the documentation for that unit, the only way I could see hexos working is if someone was able to make a direct port like a firmware upgrade. Unlike other NAS manufacturers that basically build their units as a mini pc "with a hdmi display" where you would have the opportunity to load your choice of OS. You might wanna look into building something for the long haul
-
So I know you can go Into the backend and toggle where the apps are stored generally from pool 1 to another pool, but I believe down the road if it was in the HexOs ui for the new to NAS croud having a simple drop down box on where the app storage should be placed i.e boot drive, pool1 ect ect
-
Yeah what @PsychoWardsans @Mobiussaid 😁
-
What do you think your pool size should be ? If it is non important storage it can be done with a pair of drives but if you only have a pair of 8tb disks you will only have 8tb of space in a simple zfs. If you want to build one that will last you with future proofing storage and redundancy I would look at a minimum of a 5 drive setup that will give you 2 paired drives and a failover . I built my NAS with future proofing in mind at least for a while and found some killer deals on ebay for 4tb drives and currently have 15 in my build split into 2 pools , one for all my data that is long term storage and the other is for plex and all the other things that get used on a daily .

What tutorials would you like to see ? I could crank some out

Ventoy is a great tool but I have had issues of a corrupt file in its iso folder. I suggest that you load the iso direct to its own USB for deployment
-
To my understandings of ZFS, adding a single drive to a current 2 drive array will only add redundancy. If you want to actually expand storage you will need to import 2 or 3 drives to make the pool work properly because at the minimum you'll need pairs to make a suitable pool.

Generac ?
