Took A Bit Of Time But Found Deals On eBay (Yes, It Was Worth The Wait)
Mobius replied to Iliyria's topic in Show & Tell
One thing i was considering going forward was getting amazon refurb drives and getting the ~$200/year asurion insurance for all amazon purchases. It might not be worth it if you don't spend much on amazon but if you do, it looks like a great value. A friend of mine has a toddler who's only hobby is breaking expensive things and he has saved a lot of money with the insurance. -
what parts are in your servers? is there anything you setup in the truenas interface? (ex. storage pool was made in truenas)
-
There aren't any drivers to install but people have struggled getting arc cards to work for transcoding. There should be a few threads on it but i haven't really kept up with them since i didn't plan on using arc cards myself

Pinging @jonp He might have some better insight

Just confirming your issues are post claiming server with hexos?
-
eventually yes, soon i don't know about that. the team has been focused on scaling up so fingers crossed that once these growing pains are done updates will come more frequently this is true
-
HexOS will eventually move to the most up to date stable releases of truenas. At this time there are no etas.
-
As far as i am aware there is no way to control fan speeds at this time. I'm not if/when we would get such a feature. I would check if there are any docker apps that would work for fan control.
-
Try using the contact us feature at the button on the site
-
Right now there is no concrete eta however you can checkout the hexos blog for an up to date roadmap on what to expect going forward As for what i'm using my server for It is 90% jellyfin server 5% storage for the family bc apple is allergic to giving fair upgrade costs. 5% tinkering
-
At this time not officially. We will be adding an official migrating feature in the future. As of right now there are only work around that are ymmv. Such as installing hexos without any storage drives behind plugging in to get though the installation and claiming process. Then turning off the system, plugging in the drives and reclaiming your pools in the underlying truenas ui.
-
sorry you had a bad experience. your storage is probably fine. once you install truenas you should be able to import/migrate your pools. just a heads up the middleware issue exists on truenas as well.
-
since the n100 does have quick sync you are probably right about that.
-
i think this is a question for wan show merch message lol.
-
don't hesitate to ask lots of questions either i've made mistakes i would never have expected like getting an unsupported realtek nic lmao
-
It seems like the 10gb nics in general are more reliable from what i hear. 10gb gear has been dropping in price pretty fast, you can get noname brand switches with 10gb for well under $100. That said i dunno if im willing to trust that kinda of gear but there are youtubers that are happy with those switches
-
you can try this one https://a.co/d/3wca1Ek Seems like many people recommend skipping 2.5gb and going straight to 10gb
-
I would say be careful regardless because In Germany the used drives were bought from a legitimate retailer. As for the nic did you want internal pcie or external usb?
-
i dunno of anyone that has but hexos most likely will install just fine onto either or. That said we do not recommend using external storage such as the sabrent 4 bay you mentioned. Many of these external multi bay docks also can have issues with truenas/hexos where the operating system will only properly detect 1 drive.

I'd say just look for one preflashed to it mode I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the newer lsi cards didn't use it mode anymore but i didn't look into it
-
i haven't been following plex in a while but they kinda developed a reputation for not actually fixing their product. I wonder if things have improved since i last checked.
-
ah pain. even though i don't use plex myself the increase in price will just make convincing friends to get a plex nas all the more difficult. Jellyfin works perfectly for me but to my friends that want to use their playstation as a client, its not a great option sadly
-
Massive props its always impressive to see someone maintain the dorito for so long.

an ssd pool will likely help and hexos should automatically use the faster ssd pool for apps. When purchasing a network card just make sure you avoid realtek nics as they may cause problems and/or not work at all with hexos. keep in mind other manufacturers like ugreen sell nics but may hide that they are realtek powered. When purchasing HDDs be aware of bad actors selling used drives being sold as new. This is apparently become common with seagate drives and even prompted seagate to release a tool that helps you determine if the drive is new or not. It is possible that similar scams happen with other brands but i am not aware of them at this time.
