You do need a separate os drive, i recommend the cheapest ssd you can find for that. If it doesn't have to be a mini pc, a used optiplex might be a good fit for you. Foundry vtt recommends 2 cores just for it so aim for something with 4 or 6 cores at least.

You can mix drive sizes but every drive in a raid pool will be treated as if they are the same size as the smallest drive (mixed size z1 pool will have to be done via the true nas interface) You cannot add a smaller drive to a raidZ pool later, same size or larger only. You also cannot turn a z1 pool into a z2 pool. Only "freedom" we have us slowly replacing every drive with a bigger one, once every drive is replaced the system should automatically increase the size of the pool. We pretty much have the same capabilities as truenas scale

what a great deal access to inexpensive ecc memory is such a huge boon for actual server grade hardware i think i dropped around $300 for new 4x48gb sticks of ddr5 non ecc ram. @ubergeek check facebook marketplace and craigslist. i tend to have better luck with fb. i also would just get whatever clock speeds are available as ram speeds aren't too important with truenas/hexos. More than likely you'll be bottle necked somewhere else

It's the email address you used to sign up for this website, pm me if you still have trouble
-
have you tried claiming your server via the ip address? alternatively i have heard that sometimes a reinstall of hexos can fix the problem
-
This is the way 👍
-
I could be wrong but my understand of deep link is that Intel themselves need to create a version for Linux and once they do that truenas/hexos can add support
-
More than likely once battlemage is supported by truenas it'll be added to the next hexos update.
-
i have around 50tb of stuff so thats def gonna take a while when i finally transfer it.

some users have reported it not breaking HexOS the official stance of the HexOS team is that it is not a supported usecase and it may or may not break things.

Feature Request: Virtualization Setup
Mobius replied to PurpleRiver's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
we have a virtual machine manager as part of our roadmap. No idea when we can expect it though. -
If i had to guess it'll be the apps the community wants the most. As for when the release of 1.0 will be, it's hard to say. It would be great if it'll come out by the end of the year but with any evolving project it's hard to predict that far ahead into the future.
-
This will eventually come to HexOS. Can't give you a timeline but we know that a lot of users actually want to migrate over from Scale.
-
we have a roadmap here in a blogpost. An updated one will be coming in the not too distant future. joining their partner program is an interesting suggestion, i can pass on your suggestion but no promises it'll go anywhere. it's an interesting program and something like it may be considered after we leave beta.

There should not be a time limit for activating a license. Many of us here have bought a first or second license intending to activate it a lot later (myself included) Activating a license is pretty easy, once you install HexOS and turn on your machine, on a different device (on the same network) you go to Deck.Hexos.com and you can claim your server which will automatically activate it. Yes you can play with HexOS in a vm and there are a few users that run a HexOS vm in proxmox. You can always remove your Hexos license from your vm and move it to a different machine if you desire. If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to reach out.

More RAM is always better but we tend to recommend 1gb RAM per Tb of storage.

so far my gecko browser of choice has been floorp but i'd defintely check out zen if every get fed up with vivaldi
-
this past year ive been hopping from browser to browser every month looking for a good chrome replacement. I've mostly come to terms with the perfect browser doesn't exist sadly. If majority of the internet wasn't designed to run perfect on chromium and treat Gecko as an afterthought, i would have happily stayed on a Firefox fork like zen. It's been a while since i used a gecko based browser (i front loaded them in my browser testing) so i don't remember examples but i remember just being frustrated with its compatibility. I eventually settled on Vivaldi a chromium based browser.

very impressive but hard to beat the shock of seeing doom on a pregnancy test

My Hexos build is shelved for now as well. I think once single drive pools are supported i will start my machine up again. i'm also saving up to purchase a Jonsbo N5 case after which i can fully setup my nas.

Good little storage video (cmr/smr and new drive capacities)
Mobius replied to Dylan's topic in Coffee Talk (Off-Topic)
Defintely a good watch for someone that plans to buy new HDDs in the future. -
ah i figured that buddy backup would work on same site too.
-
Well once buddy backup arrives that will likely be your best bet. until it arrives your best bet is checking out this page to see what makes most sense for you https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/gettingstarted/configure/setupbackupscale/

Theoretically it is possible however not officially supported at this time. I can only give your the possible methods but can't make any promises it will work Option 1: transplant the boot drive and all the drives of your current machine to the new one (Deck might not think it is the same device in which case you will have to reclaim it) Option 2: install hexos on the new machine, claim your new server on Deck, you will have to bypass drive erasure in 1 of the following ways when it asks you if its okay to delete your drives , hit yes and it will fail (happened to me and multiple other users but no promises it will work for you) bypass erasing your drives by plugging in 2 usb sticks and letting hexos make a pool with that keeping your HDDs unplugged and hoping for the best when you claim your server creating a new pool with drives that werent part of your original pool Once you bypass the drive erasure screen you go into truenas and migrate the pool from there. This may or may not work.

Not sure where you are located but in the United States i can find the jonsbo n4 for cheaper than the n1 and have been recommending that case whenever someone is trying to make a system with 6 or fewer HDDs. N4 looks like it has better airflow too.
