Website price currency clarification
Mobius replied to TexZeTech's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Guess it's just my good ol' MURICAN mentality to not think about catering to the rest of the world until it's pointed out.- 3 replies

i think if you use an external enclosure with multiple hdds only one will show up. But in general it is not recommended to use usb external storage feel free to read more hear https://forums.truenas.com/t/why-you-should-avoid-usb-attached-drives-for-data-pool-disks/1499

Lower the minimum specifications of RAM
Mobius replied to SignedAdam's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I think anyone that is willing to drop $300 on an operating system is probably willing to spend $20 on RAM, maybe even less if you salvage old parts. -
ive also heard that self hosted email servers even have to potential to hurt you. Imagine you apply to a new job and when they email you back, the email bounces. You just lost that opportunity

Expanded Storage Pools on Initial Setup
Mobius replied to Royalswan's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
i think the solution for your problem is currently in truenas. instead of making a large pool with 24 drives you probably want to make multiple vdevs instead it would be kinda like this picture here where the blue drives are parity and the grey drives are storage. so if any drive fails in a group of 5 you only need to resilver the smaller group of 5 instead of a gigantic group of 20. but to my undrstanding they show up as one big storage pool. That said i would assume hexos would not play nice with vdevs just yet kinda like how they don't play nice with pools of different size drives or single drive pools made in truenas. however it does not hurt to try -
Website price currency clarification
Mobius replied to TexZeTech's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I thought it was common practice to just assume it is USD if the website is a .com and assume CAD if the website is a .ca- 3 replies

if you go to store and then click store again it shows as $199 As far as im aware we were told that the price will go up to the full $299 price once HexOS leaves beta

I would have liked a trial as well since I think it would reduce friction. That said the team told us their stance is we offer 30-day refunds. It's not ideal but it's better than nothing

A lot of users using free/recycled components have to deal with that. I wasn't lucky enough to have access to such a resource so i made my system from scratch. I did wayyyyy too much research on my components before purchasing and even then had some compatibility issues with something i didn't think of accounting for (my nic)

I've read many anecdotes online of ppl saying you won't notice RAM speed unless you are using a 10gb+ nic Server PSU tend to be LOUD so it's only worth it if you have a sound isolated location with Ethernet access available to you. The 2.5" bays are more annoying to use. Majority 2.5" hdds are smr drives that don't play nice with the zfs that hexos/truenas uses. There are some 1tb or smaller hdds that are cmr but they are harder to find. The easiest use for those bays are for 2.5" sata ssds but those are expensive. For the price it'll be hard to better but you'll likely pay for it In the long run with electricity costs.

I hear lsi cards are where it's at

I vaguely recall reading that someone had success after changing the ports using truenas ui

Yup nextcloud is on my list of apps i would like easy installation for as well. I haven't personally tried it myself but i see a decent amount of community members ask chatgpt to walk them through things, maybe it'll be able to clear things up for you too

You are better off using 3.5" drives if you can for it I'm your chassis. Majority of 2.5" hdd are smr drives that didn't play nice with zfs, which is what hexos uses. There are a few 1tb cmr 2.5" hdds out there but a lot of them have been discontinued and the rest are kind of hard to find. If you only have 2.5" slots available either find the few cmr drives or go sata ssd. Consider going with fewer but larger hdds since each one uses a decent amount of power. I personally bought a lot of exos drives new from eBay. But again this is only an option if you use 3.5" drives. Mirrored boot partition is more responsible but if your server isn't mission critical and just a home nas i would skip the mirror.

I use jellyfin since its not bloated like plex and is free. It also gives me the freedom to use most every file format. I do stream content to apple tvs i have throughout the home using the infuse app (i think it was like $99 for a lifetime sub). I don't think i had to transcode at all since i setup infuse on the apple tv. I had a family member that used to watch movies streamed to his ipad using the same infuse license. On my android devices i don't even need a third party app since the jellyfin app works fantastic. The flexibility is just convenient to me since i don't always want to watch on my tv.

im hoping that there is either some warning or there will be black friday sales going forward but no way to tell now when the full release will come out. theoretically figuring out truenas shouldnt be needed at all when hexos enters full release.
-
oh man, following the one tb of storage for every gb of ram rule , you're gonna have one beefy small home nas ๐
-
yeah that would be cool but i think it also requires your motherboard to have a wake on lan feature in the bios. If you don't have a motherboard with that feature, your best bet might be to get a jetkvm or pikvm.

I think a system similar to github would be nice where before reporting a bug or requesting a feature you need to fill out a questionnaire with things like, yes i searched for this first.

new tutorial about enabling recycle bin

it didn't even occur to me that this would be a feature i would so sorely miss. thanks for the guide
-
At the moment there isn't much HexOS can do that is easier than truenas. if i were you i would just buy a license and hold on to it for when HexOS supports importing pools.

its liberating having ethernet where you want it and i defintely support running wire all over.
