Hi @Tarl72 - But for the LTO tape drive (that REALLY takes me back to 2004/5) your system *should work with HexOS. HexOS is very simple but, as we are still in beta, also very limited in functionality. I think that makes it the perfect time to jump in. What do I mean? Well, if you're still getting up to speed on server/NAS devices, perhaps this is perfect timing to grow your understanding as HexOS functionality grows. Does that make sense? I can't really answer whether Win11 or HexOS is the right choice for you. But what I can say is that you should measure your needs again the following; Windows is an OS intended for generic compute needs. It certainly CAN manage storage, host VM's, and all of the other stuff generic OS's do. HexOS is SPECIFIC to storage, VM's, file sharing etc. Are you willing to learn a bit about the ZFS filesystem? What about a bit of Linux? Take these things into consideration. Does that help? Thanks and welcome aboard!

You must but / pre-order BEFORE you can even test the BETA?
Dylan replied to Nuno Marques's topic in Coffee Talk (Off-Topic)
Hey @Nuno Marques - Yes, that is our current model. This has proven extremely beneficial as the feedback provided by our growing user-base has helped drive what WE, as users, would like to see in future releases; as opposed to being decided unilaterally as in other NAS OS offerings. And hey, we're a small shop right now. If you'd like to join and participate in growing a robust, dynamic yet simple NAS UI, then come on down like the Price Is Right! We'd love to have your positive feedback. Cheers! -
Don't forget to image you OS installation media - redundancy saves blood pressure (at least at my age 🙃)

Mostly for VM's. I tend to spin up a lot of VM's when a new distro comes out to kick the tires, as it were.

@bojun Using Ethernet as HexOS does not support wifi (and neither does TrueNAS if I am not mistaken). I'll likely throw in a second SSD for OS redudancy; either that or use it as a ZIL drive.

Huh???? What'd you say???

That's a sharp looking chassis. I'm going to have to check some reviews as I wonder how loud that thing gets as full HDD capacity.
-
I really like it. So far, it's as advertised. I keep it in my room and while the fans are not silent not sure they can get any quieter. It's responsive and the build is solid.
-
I dig it. It's just so damn big, though.

Hi @TechPanda - Your license follows which ever device you assign it to. Welcome aboard!!

Preach brother!!!! 😂 I'm already looking at buying higher (more expensive) capacity drives. RIP my $$$

Haven;t checked power consumption yet. My network is bottle-necked at 1GB LAN but haven't even seen it close to saturation at moderate transfers even when disk read/write should have been the first culprit.

Anything for cause @PsychoWards! I used the CORSAIR Vengeance. ****Of note for my specific NAS (see above Aoostar link) upon replacement, the initial boot appeared to fail as the outboard power LED flashed then went dark, indicating a failed boot. However, the NAS device audibly continued to boot (fans running etc) so I just let it sit for a minute or so. Afterwards, the power LED returned. I ASSUME that, because I do not have a monitor connected, this was what might happen any other time you replace RAM and the system POST process issues a 'RAM has changed' warning. (edit to add @Kpod for visibility)

Intel states that the N100 CPU has a max RAM capacity of 16GB but I just upgraded my Aoostar WTR Pro with a single 32GB SODIMM and it not only reports all available GB, but when tested, also utilized the increased RAM as well. Just a friendly PSA in-case you might also have the same chipset and would like to upgrade your RAM. Cheers and good luck!!

Great post @WilliamsKnights . I heartily agree that, even with as many data center years experience as I have, there just too many variables to definitively say "this disk". I have a 10yo consumer grade Netgear ReadyNAS with 2x4TB WD gold drives that are the ORIGINAL drives! They've survived not only a decade but also 4 moves. Now, I've taken really good care of the hardware but I attribute their longevity to both the drive type, the care they've received, but also...just plain old luck. All of which is to say that, at least as far as hardware goes, do your research, buy the gear designed for your use-case, take care of them and you'll get as much use out of it as you can. Cheers!

Thanks @Theo - Really do appreciate your contributions!! Beers are on me next time I see you!

Hi @Jamerperson - Three licenses would be needed to run three different servers. I do not know if there will be discounts for multiple purchases but there may be in the future, so stay tuned!

Hi @stefanBaciu - It's generally best to search the forums to see if your questions have already been addressed. If not, you can reach out to one of the admins for additional assistance. Welcome!

I legit thought that was some new kind of NIC!!! 😜

Server stopped working after a single power down. Did I break it.
Dylan replied to dgaskell's question in OS & Features
@dgaskell Can you uninstall the Plex app, reboot and see what happens? Also, can you log into your router and see what IP address the router has assigned to you HexOS NAS? -
Are you talking about getting another chassis? My current one only has 4 total drive bays.
-
Oh boy...I swear I have NEVER done that!!! 😂
