  1. Blog post: https://hexos.com/blog/introducing-zfs-anyraid-sponsored-by-eshtek For those that missed it yesterday, AnyRaid was announced on the ZFS Leadership call. This Eshtek-sponsored feature will bring mixed size drive support to OpenZFS. We will be posting a blog about this in more detail soon! Edit: Here's a link to the YouTube video from the ZFS Leadership call. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MifloJFCpLU

  2. This is AMAZING! Slowly but surely, HexOS will conquer all competing NAS software! "Oh you have X feature? OK, we'll do that, and make it better" 😂

  7. I see an opportunity for a HexOs AnyRaid usable storage calculator 😀

  8. The YouTube video goes deep in how space gets allocated, but to be perfectly honest, it's probably still going to be a little difficult for non-storage developers to easily decipher. We'll post another blog in the future with more details on the methods used and how space gets calculated. For now, we just wanted to let people know that this is coming, a basic example of how it differs from the traditional way, and why we sponsored it.

  9. I like it anyway 😀. For someone like you, a 3d printer could be a nice adition to your toolsset. When I read your SFF journey I see a lot of experimenting and out of the box thinking.

  10. I would like to show some pictures of the older case also, since they are both very stylish. This case has a bottom part where you put the Pi, then you put the top part above 😉 That’s why it looks a bit so-so in the pictures - the top part is not properly set. If I hadn’t found a wood case for the Pi I would(!) have chosen this Akasa aluminium case: https://akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&type=CHASSIS%20POWER&type_sub=FANLESS%20CASES&model=A-RA13-M2B Thiis isn’t about HexOS, I know, but either of my use cases could work like partners to my HexOS PocketNAS.

  11. This will make a difference for a lot of home users. You can reuse HDDs of different sizes with less constraint.

  12. The previous owner (who had the house custom built) just had a deep freeze in there; not sure why he wanted the vent, but I appreciate his attention to quality, detail, and versatility in his design choices. Was hoping to find someone I could buddy backup my PC image with; I'm sure we can help each other out.

  13. I think it's easy to dog pile when there have been 0 updates for as long as it's been, but yea... I think the new updates to TrueNAS make whatever is going to be included in the next iteration of HexOS more exciting. Although, I wouldn't expect many of these features to be made available to us through HexOS for a while, it would still be nice to push an update in beta stage that allows testing of how it will interact with Fangtooth and give us the option to explore some of these feature updates in the meantime... I am considering migrating to TrueNAS completely at this point and reserving HexOS for my family if/when they get out of beta. Would be nice to at least have a progress report, or some other form of update that communicates the expectations the HexOS team wants to set for the end user. IMO current state expectations are not tempered because they're not established

  14. To be honest, I am pretty possitive about the current state of the HexOs beta. And yes, I also like to see more updates from the HexOs team. It's a journey and I think it's much better as a beta user to be part of that journey. If you hear nothing, you will set your own expectations on timelines and features. Disappointment if often the result of the lack of communication. But back to the beta. I have two HexOs systems. For one system I follow the recommendations pretty strickt, only one pool, no updates via Truenas, only use Immich and Plex, ... This system is running pretty solid for months now. My other system is my HexOs test system and it breaks once and a while. Mostly because I tried all kind of things in Truenas. But if I try the update functionality in TrueNas and it breaks HexOs, then it is an expected faillure. I expect a HexOs update based on TrueNas 25.04 in Q2. TrueNas 25.04 is released in April. So I think is reasonable to expect that the HexOs team needs some time to build and test HexOs on top of this stable version. See quote HexOs Q1 status update: Rescheduling VM Support Similar to what happened with Docker, iXsystems is in the process of migrating TrueNAS SCALE to a new VM and Linux Container management environment in their next major release, 25.04. Incus promises to provide a few key feature improvements, including a better web-based VNC agent. As such, focusing on VM management features in the short term didn’t make sense given that the ground would be moving beneath our feet. Furthermore, in temperature checking our current community, it appears that increasing application support and buddy backups are of a higher desire. It is for these reasons we have lower the priority of VM features. Keep in mind, you can still create VMs within TrueNAS itself, and we will give you start/stop controls from our Command Deck dashboard for them.
