Hey @SignedAdam - I remember you and I talking about our old Netgear ReadyNAS devices a few months back. It looks like you've done a STELLAR job of getting that hardware as close to functional as possible - that's pretty badass!! But I think a few things need to be made clear; The minimum RAM required is 8GB - while it might run on less, expecting functionality or the dev team to support this in the near term is not realistic @PsychoWards is right, ZFS is here to stay for HexOS Many of us here like @ubergeek and @Mobius have DIY home builds and we want to support those efforts!! It keeps costs down, reduces e-waste and increases our community knowledge base. It just feels like you are trying to smash a square peg through a round hole here. I too still have my 2 bay Netgear ReadyNAS and am pissed that they've stopped supporting it, but I also dont expect HexOS to be an alternative - it just does not meet the minimum requirements. I mean it when I say I think your efforts to try and get it working are awesome. And, if you only have that device and no other options, I know I and others might be willing to help sort you out on parts to get another rig up and running, so hang in there.

Man, I've fallen down a rabbit hole but have learned a bit here. I think @Theo was right about a permissions issue. I found out that when you mount a Samba share from your file manager it goes into gvfs. But if you mount a Samba share through fstab, it goes into /media. So, rather then chase down changing permission via /run/user/1000/gvfs I think I'll instead make an entery in fstab and see what happens. I can't believe others haven't commented on this before...

@ulfn I hope you are documenting your build, especially with pics - I'd love for you to be able to share your process.
-
Yeah, this can royally screw up your plan if you get a SFP and you're expecting RJ45 so PLEASE pay attention to that.
-
Mint 22 and no fstab entry, only use Nemo (file browser) to browse up/down load my files once they are pulled down locally via my lappy.
-
If you were to guess, what do you think would be a reasonable price for the device with the those specs?
-
Yes, as it worked on a few rando files and I'll def try the direct connect and see what happens. DM me an ARR's link to de-mystify this sorcery, please and thank you!!
-
The ARR's scare me...it's like witchcraft.

Using Linux so: smb://bigboy.local/shows/ Where bigboy is the NAS.
-
here is the ISO file name that I've removed followed by Now, here's the thing...the above error repeats so many times that it finally dies with: Why the hell would a torrent error out on a .srt file? This happens ALL the time.
-
Correct. I'll kick one off here and reply with the error.
-
@alfasierraalfa Yeah, slow and easy with an eye for re0-installation is the path I've taken as well. I'm waiting for official raidz2 support so only throwing things on my NAS that if I had to loose, I can always recover. How are those re-furb disks working for you?
-
Three devices, same network. Laptop, router, NAS. NAS connected to router via ethernet, lappy is wireless. When I DL a Linux ISO from my laptop (via local torrenting software) and direct the file to be written to a directory on the NAS, it almost always fails. I say almost because I think it's worked once or twice but at the time was attempting to solve other issues. Every other time it errors out. I can attempt to recreate to share the error, but is there something fundamental that I am missing that would prevent me from doing this?

So far no complaints, I am very happy with the WTR Pro. If they come out with a 6 bay option I will very likely buy that too as the performacne meets my needs well. Good luck @Insanittyx!!

I believe it you!

@ulfn You can ask me (or any of the other Mods) to do it for you - just let me know what you'd like changed!

Hi @gingerling Great content, thank you for sharing. I noticed on your posts that you cover "things you didn't know/understand" - please make sure and reach out here with your questions - we'd love to help make sure you get proper feedback! -

Hi @pirateben Thank you for your feedback! One question; what is a printer service? Also, I believe there are plan for a Buddy Backup solution at some point in the future. -
I gotchu!

Active Directory is LDAP is poor disguise.

Hi @Richj73 - Amazon sells reconditioned drives. Just be careful, test them as much as possible and use all available tools to get them as healthy as possible. Reconditioned drives are very high risk.
-
I get it. I've lived in Central America and know how dodgy ISP's can be.

That is cray-cray. Super glad you got it sorted out but...dang....WTF starlink? 😆
