  1. Small word of caution: By starting with only 2 drives you won't have the ability to add more to the pool later via RAIDz Expansion. That's totally fine, I just want to make sure that if you are imagining expanding your pool later you know that you will have to completely rebuild it to add the 3rd drive, since it has to change from a mirror to ZFS. IMO that's probably the one thing I would have changed about the initial LTT video would have been to have them use 3 drives to start.
  2. Oh! and you can follow users from their profiles.
  3. You can also enable it per thread at the top of the page:
  4. Aww... it's adorable! Pretty amazing how much compute and functionality can be put in such a small package these days.
  5. So you moved all drives to the new build(s), including the boot drives? @Creative0100, it sounds like HexOS doesn't care as long as the drives (including the boot drive of course) are present
  6. Sick. I love the look of that hardware!
  7. Interesting... @jonp, this seems like something that could use further digging into...
  8. That link directs back to this thread
  9. Very curious about this also. What shows up if you click "replace" ?
  10. As far as physical placement, I don't see any reason that you would need to separate the drives... better to keep them congregated so that if/when you add more drives you don't have to move the existing ones. (though even if you needed to it should be fine since the drives are id'd by their unique id's, which means it shouldn't matter if they change which port they are on). Separating the drives would likely have some impact on performance and longevity, but not enough to worry about in my opinion. Hard drives are pretty much a solved science at this point, and they are designed to operate in proximity with each other. Enterprise drives may be built to handle this better than consumer units, but in a small chassis use case like this even that probably won't make a significant difference. Physical placement won't affect the pool creation directly, that would be more related to which order you plug your SATA cables into the back plane. Even then, it doesn't really matter, it just may change which drive exactly is 'sda', 'sdb', etc. Are you planning to use a HBA card. or native SATA ports off of your motherboard? For 10+ drives I imagine you would need an HBA eventually, but if you are starting with only 4 plus a boot device you could probably do that on most motherboards. If you are using an HBA you may be more easily able to plug the cables into the backplane in numerical order, which in theory would set things up so that your left most drive would start as 'sda', and then proceed through the alphabet, with drive no. 10 being 'sdj', and the boot device potentially being 'sdk'. (And no, I totally didn't have to count out the letters of the alphabet to get that answer... why would you ask such a silly question?? 🤣)
  11. That's kinda awesome 😆
  12. So you don't want a 42U rack in your living room?? 😆
  13. Aka, never. Temporarily solutions are my favorite kind of permenant! 😂
  14. You should throw caution to the wind and start by getting a case with plenty of drive bays... Perhaps something like the Sliger CX7302. (10) trayless 3.5" bays, (4) internal 2.5" mounts, 3U rack mountable x 18" deep, Micro ATX, SFX/SFX-L PSU, color choices for the front panel... its a slick little chassis. https://sliger.com/products/rackmount/storage/cx3702/
  15. That should be totally fine!
  16. I know a discord was mentioned early on before the beta launch, but I think it got put to the side to streamline the launch process. I haven't heard anything about it since, but the idea was there, and will probably come around again in the future 😊
  17. What about IRC? 🤣 I'm the main mod of /r/HexOS btw, with @jonp and @RobotsNeverDie as the other mods 😊
  18. Ah... Reminds me of the good (bad?) old days when I was just getting into computers in highschool. I built my first PC in an old Dell Dimension 2600 case. I had to cut a hole in the side panel to fit the top of my Hyper 212 cooler 😆
  19. That machine would require two licenses, as it is technically two machines in one chassis, and would require two installs of HexOS.
  20. Right now I'm fiddling around with Plex, since it is curated. I'll probably end up on Jellyfin. What I would LOVE to have in addition to jellyfin is some way to create my own virtual TV channels. There are a few people on Youtube that are taking Rpi's and old commercial RF modulators and to create their own analog TV channels on their homes' coax networks. I want to create this same concept just digital. So the content would be on a set schedule (vs on demand), but it would still be streaming. Here's a link to one of the videos of someone who has an RF local TV setup:
  21. This is a platform level issue I believe and not unique to our forum alone. Device: S21 ultra, android 14, Firefox 133.0.3 (Build #2016060959) When using the editor on mobile it has been nearly impossible for me to create or edit posts with @mentions, links, emoji, or photos. Basically anything that the forum platform automatically embeds something for The issue seems to be that those entities are not handled properly in the editor, and don't fully exist in-line in the text of the post being written. This causes issues when trying to type near them (such as adding " 's" to an @mention), or deleting them. At mentions particularly seem to either avoid or capture the cursor such that they can't be escaped. It's a very odd issue. Is anyone else experiencing this?
  22. @Mobius, @Theo, @PenguinKing, @Dylan, @jonp I love this idea! Things like this are what make a community great. I agree that a separate sub-forum would be ideal. Possibly 'Support > Guides and Tutorials'. EDIT: All right gents! The wheels are in motion!
  23. I'm in the Seattle area, so it would be a bit of a hike... 😅
