  1. Hi I think I am probably an ideal HexOS customer and so I have decided to document my user experience as I go, I think it's fun and also really useful. How I chose hardware: https://www.gingerling.co.uk/how-i-chose-hardware-for-my-hexos-nas/ Building my NAS: https://www.gingerling.co.uk/building-my-hexos-nas/ Installing HexOS: https://www.gingerling.co.uk/installing-hexos/ I'm working on the next post already and it's got lots about this forum - best behaviour then folks šŸ˜„

  3. Hi, It was fun to read! Interesting to see HexOS through fresh eyes. I've been playing with computer hardware since I was 12, so many things in HexOS that seem simple to me might not be as straightforward if you're not looking at them through a tech lens. Keep writing! Iā€™m looking forward to the next episode!

  4. Hey, yes this is not that difficult to do, I have done this in the past with various different NAS constellations. With Hexos you have 2 options: If you want to backup to another Hexos or Truenas you should use ZFS replication. (this is not your usecase) If you want to backup to a NAS which is not using ZFS you should do the backups using rsync. For rsync you need to configure both your Synology NAS as a server and your Hexos as a client (this needs to be setup in Truenas, Hexos doesn't offer this yet).

  6. external usb devices are not recommended and may cause issues. It may or may not work depending on if the DAS passes through the actual serial number of the HDD, a lot of External HDD enclosures don't either way i wouldn't bother.

  7. Small word of caution: By starting with only 2 drives you won't have the ability to add more to the pool later via RAIDz Expansion. That's totally fine, I just want to make sure that if you are imagining expanding your pool later you know that you will have to completely rebuild it to add the 3rd drive, since it has to change from a mirror to ZFS. IMO that's probably the one thing I would have changed about the initial LTT video would have been to have them use 3 drives to start.

  8. @alfasierraalfa Yeah, slow and easy with an eye for re0-installation is the path I've taken as well. I'm waiting for official raidz2 support so only throwing things on my NAS that if I had to loose, I can always recover. How are those re-furb disks working for you?
