Do you also have a recommendation of reverse proxies? I know there are several but recommendations of peoples top three help a lot.

Q2 Command Deck Update Notification (06/27/2025)
Todd Miller replied to jerod's topic in Announcements
Are we still holding at ElectricEel-24.10.2.2? -
When this update goes live will I need to reinstall from the ISO? Or is this going to be closer to when Tailscale has an update? Or have I blown this out of proportion and I don't really have to do anything?
-
I only disagree with that statement because the web UI is all that loses connection. All other connections stay active. Has the team given you different specific direction? And to be more specific, I can access the HexOS URL. I just get an unavailable error through that URL.
-
Hmm. It sounds Mascot like you have the measure of this issue. I wonder if this will be solved or at least lessened with the local UI?
-
Right now I am getting the same thing but it is weird and may not be the same as others. I only reboot or shutdown the server when I have to. And that is once or twice a week (mostly just once) because of the server unavailable error. The thing I think is weird is only the wb UI is having a connection issue. My HD Homerun capture card stays connected and all my TV's still can either watch live TV but also movies and pre-recorded shows from the HexOS server. My windows drive assignments also maintain their connection to the server. I haven't tried the TrueNAS connection because honestly, I don't think of it fast enough. Is it possible something is happening at the developers end that only the web UI seems affected for me? It is an extremely annoying issue since it requires me to reboot the HexOS server. When I do I can connect again without noticeable issue.

Install guide are critical for the beta test to pick up more of the steam it had at the beginning. The "I can't get this o work" forum posts seem to outnumber the "Wow, this is great' posts. There are also few posts that show what people use and are bringing over from TrueNAS. And even less on how they did it. And for people like me I'm not even thinking about trying other apps on my own until I see more folks nailing down the initial install. Right or wrong, I saw a guide for tailscale and was able to use it to get remote access to Immich and the storage within HexOS itself. I'm slow to look at apps that cost though I have a Plex pass because getting the value of that app is within my skill.. It seems that if you put an install guide that the new to NAS folks can follow, you are helping to set the apps that will become the defaults in the near term. First dropbox type self storage apps with a working install will be way ahead of the other apps people like even if the HexOS devs chose a different app to list. As it is often said, one in the hand is worth two in the bush.
-
By community do you mean the original developer if they want their app ro run on HexOS and the developer takes responsibility to maintain compatibility? Or community as in folks like me ho will try to follow guides to get a working install, filling the template out as I go? Or something else I can't really imagine yet since we are early in this process? It seems the official templates need to be curated by HexOS to maintain the widest compatibility possible. But folks with more complicated hardware or the interest to load 20+ TrueNAS compatible apps will want a more custom template or don't want to wait for templates created on a established release schedule. Never a dull moment I guess.

I wonder if this is what's going on?

Hmm. How many folks here have ever been through a large scale beta test before? This seems normal or perhaps even a little fast if you read the errors in the forums. Over the last three days have had to completely rebuild my HexOS server when it stopped connecting or allowing other things to connect. Was it a HexOS issue? I don't know as I was looking through pictures in the Immich web UI when I lost all connections. Did I need to rebuild the whole server? Well, I did because I don't know the first thing about TrueNas and some of the longest running forum threads are connections issues. This isn't a phone game that we will play for a few months then move on to the new hotness. I'm approaching 60 years old and I hope this product is built to outlast me! I won't begrudge anyone a frustration rant but to me that's all they are because I think FangerZero hit the nail square on the head with their last line above. And multi million dollar projects become zero dollar projects when you don't have a rock solid base. Now all that being said, would you folks hurry up! The natives are getting restless.

How do I access the app after its installed?
Todd Miller replied to Justice4all's topic in Applications
If you need to fall back the TrueNas to run an app, I would be suspicious of it having installed successfully. I can't say it is unacceptable though because it is the app (like Immich or Plex) running regardless of how you got there. When I had a similar issue it was because of a security issue with the folders that someone helped me with so I bet it could be a lot of things. -
Less technical user dives in to backups and installing apps!
Todd Miller replied to gingerling's topic in Show & Tell
After nearly 40 years of mainframe programing, off and on PC support for the companies I worked for, Probably about as many years creating and maintaining first Apple PC's then on to 8086 PC's and beyond, I believe I have made some observations. I can build a PC from a pile of parts. I can network equipment together through wireless, wired and electrical and recently through coaxial cable. I can put a RJ45 end on ethernet cable the old way (without the quick crimp tool). What I consider to be my crowning achievement was working with my dad to help a neighbor get an early 70's Corvette running. While I understand the concept of internal combustion, my diagnostics skills are limited to "getting spark" and getting gas". So my value to this project was to read the manual for the parts and they were added to the hunk of metal hanging in their garage. Things like this show me "technical" is a mindset or approach more than a true level of knowledge. Sure the two go hand in hand but if you don't have a technical approach you will not successfully set up a NAS at any but the very most basic level. And adding products to that NAS is out of the question. That is why when I ask a question I often ask for a picture to see where I deviated. Not just to fix it but to see what happens when I change settings. I have pages of notes from all the way back when I was picking out the hardware I am using for the HexOS NAS. I started expecting I would be setting up an UnRaid instead of TrueNAS. A friend with some knowledge was pushing me to TrueNAS when I say the LTT videos'. Reading the "How I chose hardware" article showed very clearly how you are short on experience and expertise. But it also showed a technical aptitude that is NOT in short supply here in this forum. So when you are done with this experience I would like to hear your opinion. You may find some of the information you are given when you ask for help to be difficult to follow. Thats you experience level not your technology level. Experience can come easy and hard depending on your level of effort in a project but becoming technical when you previously were not? I don't even know if that happens. Keep up the articles please. -
Just did a rollback and everything is back to normal. Not sure what the issue was.
-
Crap. I let Plex update and now nothing but the webui can access my content. One step forward, two steps back.
-
The updates are performed within the TrueNAS app and not HexOS right? Or at least that is where I see them.
-
Is the new template being worked on for software developers to use to create easier installs for their software of for us to use to build our own installs?
-
Ok, so it seems the direction is to wait to update TrueNAS until given the green light. What about the Plex and Immich products? Since for me HexOS is mostly the data holder, I wonder if those updates are ok. Well, I don't wonder enough to try the updates I guess. My concern is my phones and TV's have the updates already. Plex has updated a couple times since the app on HexOS has. I am thinking the devs might not have a problem with a few folks trying the new versions but I can imagine the mess we would have if 50,000 folks tried it and it broke. Do we have an official position besides holding off for TrueNAS updates until given the go ahead?
-
Has there been any discussion on what the per month cost would be?
-
That 30 day guarantee was what did it for me because I assumed I would install the HexOS ISO and noot understand a single thing. Since I don't own a giant Canadian tech youtube channel or have numerous folks I pay to research things for me all day, I hoped it would be easy to work with. I got in at the original beta price so it wasn't really about the price. I already had a machine to use and a 30 day window to say I give up was the last piece to say I will try this. This application may not be perfect for everyone but you never know what you can do until you try. One friendly bit of advice, read the install guides at least once before you start. I used the read as you go method and I missed some things that were pretty simple but I was a bit overwhelmed.

I am someone in a similar position in that I had not used and true NAS software. I did inherit a unraid setup previously but I didn't really want to learn networking. I think I have gotten to the point that simple is my number one requirement because I If the developers first make HexOS simple to install, they will have my attention. While my Plex and Immich installs are probably incomplete, I am much farther than I would have been without the work HexOS did for me. After installing those apps all I did was copy pictures and Videos to folders HexOS told me to. Again, I acknowledge my setup is missing some remote access but I will get there. In addition to this it looks like the HexOS devs are working on adding more apps and functions to their recommended list. To me this sounds like in the future I may have more tools like a password manager, network tools or really anything that docker has that can improve the user experience. I won't act like I know much about the underlying TrueNas functionality and power. But even when I have found I am stuck, I have had several folks who do know what they are talking about give instructions to go threw my issues and questions. If you are a TrueNas expert you can probably do lots that I can't do in HexOS. That will probably always be true. But it's not because HexOS in not a powerful product. I just need to get my act together to take advantage of current (and hopefully numerous future) additions that are bridging the gap between my knowledge and the expert I have gotten help from here.

End of an Era - The Transition Is Done! (Picture)

Hmm. When I bought a 10MB hard drive for my PC XT I was told that was future proof. I wonder how much of that hardware will still be there in two years? Sure looks set for now though. 😁 -

Agreed. Maybe we need to start saying our level of expertise is more inline with novice instead of saying less technical. -
My journey with hexos to JellyFin with Intel Transcoding 💖
Todd Miller replied to thomasmillergb's topic in Show & Tell
I've heard a lot about Jellyfin and am interested in hearing from folks who have used both recently. It seems to be on many folks list of what to work on next but since I have a lifetime Plex pass I am hesitant to take up new software that me be in an upcoming phase of this project like Plex and Imich are in the first phase. And because the world of NAS systems and software is not my speciality I want to hear more success stories before I upset the apple cart myself. Perhaps not the best approach for a beta testing effort but i'll pull my weight yet. Though I can't access Plex externally yet, it was very easy to load both my movies and episodic tv. I head to do a little renaming of the files but everything show up with the correct episode name and date. I have a few issues where the episode order doesn't match Ples or IMDB for that matter but those feel like a small price to pay for every DR Who episode from Eccleston through Whittaker to just work. If the Jellyfin install falls under the new template option it sounds like is coming next I may give it a go but I don't want to break HexOS because I couldn't wait and did something in TrueNAS. I am really in over my head there. As an aside, how did the PI5 work? I have a kit but haven't done anything with it yet? If it can run HexOS, that sounds like street cred and bragging rights. Ugh, I suppose the kids don't say it that way anymore. -
As an aside, is all your storage NVME? Is it generally accepted that that type of storage is stable enough for a NAS with all the writing and rewriting? Just curious.
