  1. For those who might think, how can you buy an SSD for like US$91 without knowing it would work? Well I’m also in the HiFi/audiophile community, and in those circles 91USD are like coffee money. I’m hardened.

  2. So I decided to throw together a quick video for thoes that are questioning hardware when it comes to building their HexOs build. This is something i put together in a short time with my 20+ years in the used parts game. Feel free to give me pointers or opinions on things i may have missed and if there is a need ill create a part 2 with used enterprise gear..

  3. I saw in the FAQ where you said the reasons why local config is not needed, with ideas of internet outages etc not being aproblem. But this misses the point. For one, this was promised as a SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE tha it would come eventualy, no rush no problem, on Linus Tech Tips. One of the reasons why I bought it so fast. But more importantly, if your company ever goes bankrupt, that is why we need access. Of if you have DDOS attack or any number of reasons your servers are not accessible, but mostly, if you close down shop. Truenas is free, we bought your software so we the noobs and power users can use it. Understand where I am coming from, I don't intent to EVER use the local config interface when you make one. But it needs to be there for this reason. And by all means, NO RUSH! For sure get all the awesome important features implemented, I can wait. But I implore you to put a "yes for sure in the future: Checkmark on this. I was kind of stunned after the Linus Tech video saying it is coming for sure later, then in the FAQ hearing you saig IF, and it's not needed....

  4. Man, I've fallen down a rabbit hole but have learned a bit here. I think @Theo was right about a permissions issue. I found out that when you mount a Samba share from your file manager it goes into gvfs. But if you mount a Samba share through fstab, it goes into /media. So, rather then chase down changing permission via /run/user/1000/gvfs I think I'll instead make an entery in fstab and see what happens. I can't believe others haven't commented on this before...

  6. I have a creality K1 and I can recommend this 3D printer. The only downside for me is that the printbed is not big enough for 10 inch rack parts. I don't have the multi fillament feeder, but that's an option. The K1 max and the K2 plus combo (with multi filament feeder) are also available and have a bigger printbed. There is a pretty big price difference between the K1 ($389) and the K2 plus Combo ($1499). I don't have experience with other brands.

  7. maybe some of the space limitations can be overcome with a custom 3d printed case?

  8. @ubergeek, een excellent video. A lot good advice! To add on that. A more general advice. Before you start buying hardware, define what you need and what you want to do with your NAS / server. If you find this difficult or you don't want to spend time on reading and investigating, then it's better to for a more out of the box ready product. @ubergeek shows a lot of options, but you have to decide what fits best.

  9. Since the turnkey nas you mentioned charge a premium because of their fairly polished proprietary OS. I would also assume it would cost somewhere in between the 2

  10. @ubergeek, at about 10:30 you mention putting 3.5" drives in 5.25" ODD bays, and I want to share some info I have on that There are actually mount adapters that allow for very efficient use of ODD bays for drives. There are all sorts, including for crazy numbers of 2.5" drives, but I'll stick with linking a few examples that work with 3.5" drives. I haven't used all of these personally, but the concept is the main thing I want to share. 2x 5.25" ODD to 3x 3.5" HDD Fixed mounting (CHEAP option!): https://a.co/d/0cKp1eu Hot Swap: https://a.co/d/ingfbWT 3x 5.25" ODD to 5x 3.5" HDD (yes, FIVE!) Fixed mounting (CHEAP option!): https://a.co/d/aTJ63CU Hotswap: https://a.co/d/2wbgm6G (I have this unit and it works great) Here are a couple links to manufacturers product categories for this sort of thing. Poke around on these pages and you can find some really weird stuff! IcyDock: https://global.icydock.com/ Docks like this is basically ALL they do! 11. Hexos actually hasn't given me any issues with my mismatched drives I have a pool of 2 16s and 3 14s

  12. I see it says that you can setup for a minimum of 2 drives (though not expandable) so long as they are a "similar size". I had a 12TB and a 16TB drive and it wouldn't allow me to create a pool. I decided to grab another 12TB drive thinking this might help solve the issue and so I could start out with an expandable pool right off the bat. When I installed the third drive however, it only set the pool with the 2-12TB drives. Does having one drive +33% exceed the rule of "similar size"? Is there an approximate percentage the drive needs to be within as opposed to examples in GBs? I bought the 16TB while it was on sale thinking the 12TB was close enough and it was on sale at the time making it appealing for 1 of the drives with an eye towards eventual upgrades on the smaller drive(s). I would be fine with the 16TB drive being used temporarily at 12TB which is what I though I understood would be the case.

  14. Thanks, now I feel confident to setup Z2 in TrueNas without breaking anything in HexOS.
