ubergeek Posted January 25 Posted January 25 This post was recognized by Dylan! "Thank for your time and effort to share with the community!" ubergeek was awarded 25 points. So I decided to throw together a quick video for thoes that are questioning hardware when it comes to building their HexOs build. This is something i put together in a short time with my 20+ years in the used parts game. Feel free to give me pointers or opinions on things i may have missed and if there is a need ill create a part 2 with used enterprise gear.. 2 Quote
Dylan Posted January 26 Posted January 26 This is a great video that should really help those new to DIY/used builds. A huge thank you to @ubergeek for taking his time to share his experience; hopefully this helps reduce costs, e-waste and frustrations while also growing our community, especially the new-to-home build folks!! 🤓 1 Quote

Mawson Posted February 9 Posted February 9 @ubergeek, at about 10:30 you mention putting 3.5" drives in 5.25" ODD bays, and I want to share some info I have on that There are actually mount adapters that allow for very efficient use of ODD bays for drives. There are all sorts, including for crazy numbers of 2.5" drives, but I'll stick with linking a few examples that work with 3.5" drives. I haven't used all of these personally, but the concept is the main thing I want to share. 2x 5.25" ODD to 3x 3.5" HDD Fixed mounting (CHEAP option!): https://a.co/d/0cKp1eu Hot Swap: https://a.co/d/ingfbWT 3x 5.25" ODD to 5x 3.5" HDD (yes, FIVE!) Fixed mounting (CHEAP option!): https://a.co/d/aTJ63CU Hotswap: https://a.co/d/2wbgm6G (I have this unit and it works great) Here are a couple links to manufacturers product categories for this sort of thing. Poke around on these pages and you can find some really weird stuff! IcyDock: https://global.icydock.com/ Docks like this is basically ALL they do! Mawson Posted February 9 Posted February 9 Also, for general shopping tips, don't neglect looking locally using FB marketplace, Craigslist, etc! Quote
Sonic Posted February 9 Posted February 9 @ubergeek, een excellent video. A lot good advice! To add on that. A more general advice. Before you start buying hardware, define what you need and what you want to do with your NAS / server. If you find this difficult or you don't want to spend time on reading and investigating, then it's better to for a more out of the box ready product. @ubergeek shows a lot of options, but you have to decide what fits best. 1 Quote

Mawson Posted February 9 Posted February 9 That's a fair point. I'm in the Seattle area so I may be a bit spoiled in that regard. Quote

jpadgett Posted February 27 Posted February 27 (edited) Video was great. In my town we have a store call Skycraft that sales stuff from all the Lockheed Martian and NASA, SpaceX just all kinds of stuff over the years I have gotten so much cool things from there. If I would have had that store back in the 70 and 80's I would have never had to go to Radio Shack. Just picked up a 4U computer case rack mount for 20 bucks going to rip everything out a turn it into a 36 bay JBOD for my r730xd. HexOS will rule them all HA!!! Im actually jealous, Houston is the closest stores that have recyclers that sell similar. All I have is FB market where people think a gtx970 is worth $200. make sure you show off them new builds 1 Quote
