Time Machine Backups (with child datasets per user)
Theo replied to joshdev's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I know this is a request for a more 'One click' Hex TM integration, but incase people wanted to test this now, you can do this in Hex + TN today. (already had mine running a week without issue. TIME MACHINE INSTALL GUIDE Create a Folder & name it time machine (or a custom name) Set the Folder permissions (I left mine open, add user permissions here to restricted access) Navigate to the TrueNas UI (Server IP > Username: truenas_admin Pasword: server password from install) Navigate to the Shares tab, you should see your newly created share. Click on edit (pencil) On the Purpose drop down change to > Basic or multi user time machine. Press save/apply, and it'll prompt a restart of the SMB process. Go to your mac settings > general > Time machine. Click the + icon and locate your time machine share, then click setup disk. FYI if you aren't already connected to your Hex server, you'd need to do so now. Either search for the server in the network tab of finder OR connect to the server with finder > go > connect to server > SMB://[THE IP OF YOUR HEX SERVER] You can now choose to encrypt your backup with a password + if you choose, restrict the total disk usage the backup will have. You should now see your time machine backup setup. This will start automatically, but you can create a back up straight away if you choose. AUTO CONNECT SHARED DRIVE SETUP Now that could be it, but to ensure your Time machine backup will always occur, you need to ensure your Mac is always connected to your Hex server. to do this, we need to add the share to the login items Open Settings > general > Login items > click the + icon Locate your connected time machine share, then click open. You should now see the drive in the login items. That's it, you should be all setup and running.- 9 replies

Time Machine Backups (with child datasets per user)
Theo replied to joshdev's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
If you wanted to back up and iphone, you can do a manual back up if you plug your phone into a mac / pc. However you'd have to manage those files / move them to the NAS ect. What you could use the NAS for to back up fro an iphone is NextCloud for files / documents, photos ect. And if you want a dedicated photo backup, Immich. -
This has been commented on and noted by the developers already HERE Furthermore, if you're commenting on issues whilst using Hex, i'd suggest you use the 'support' forum section, not the 'pre sales'. it'll enable better responses & visability.

@jonp Agree on the contextual aspect. i had struggled with the Install of Immich due to the complexities, hence setup guides would have been amazing. FYI documented my issues & frustrations with that install process HERE Additionally, @Magnus couldn't help myself as a designer, here's a quick 2 minute mock up of how you might integrate the above discussion points into your existing UI. But obviously a lot more nuance and context to add for each app etc.

Also another thought, on the top menu items we have Browse, Activity, Store. Potentially another menu item could go here. Let's say 'Setup' or 'Guides' for example. The sub menus could then potentially be something like; Guides / Setup Hex OS Install Download link Bare metal install guide VM install guide Managing Hex Servers Deck console... Local UI Hex local TNS UI System recommendations Hex recommended Community suggestions ... Storage Pools What is ZFS? How to create a Pool Storage 101 Expandable vs Mirror Recommended drives redundancy vs back up snapshots ... Folders + Users Create network share... User & permissions Buddy backup? ... App Installs Plex immich Tailscale The Arr's ect.. Server Settings Network ... A rough example, but you should get the idea. Again, i'd treat this like a managed space where the core information has been curated and moderated as much as possible for existing > new hex users as the main source of truth. From the majority of this content, it can then spill over into the forums to branch into wider conversations, suggestions, FAQ's & fixes.

i'm only at ~10TB... it would be more if i had access to fiber!

I have a license key and my order says "Active" - am I in Beta?
Theo replied to Majzok's topic in Other Questions
Everyone who's purchased should have access now. You'll find the install guide and link to the ISO HERE -
Those Linux ISO's can add up.... 😉

15 drives! Someone needs to be posting this in r/DataHoarder 🤣
-
Small QOL addition, would be nice to see the % used at a glance in the high level storage card view. Yes, i know it's visible when you click on the cards, but arguable this is more prominent information at the high level. especially as people add more pools to their system etc.
-
For me at minimum these topics need to be very easy to find in the forums / on the core site. As the forum at the moment can be a challenge to search, especially with all the week 1 bloat / repetition. Furthermore, in the Hex UI on the apps there should be a dedicated Help link to take users to documentation / setup guides etc. And if you're hoping to treat the forum as the go too FAQ section, then in the case of apps, they potentially should each have their own sub section to again aid in search-ability.

Nice stuff! curious, what case is that?
-
Right now you can skip pool creation by removing the drives during install.
-
When you install Hex you have the ability to install it on two (or more) boot drives for redundancy, i've currently got that running atm. if that's what you're talking about?
-
from what i'm understanding from OP is what if he wants to transfer from one build to another (new drives) during setup / transfer 'technically two servers would need to be active. I guess the main question being asked is, will there be a grace period to allow temporary transfer. BUT, this assumes someone couldn't do a physical relocation, if they could then the above is negated. I could see this being possible for people with Systems with Under 10-15TB if they had a 1gb+ connection to both systems remotely. Otherwise pointless.

HexOS Home assistant integration (Not Server)
Theo replied to Theo's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Yeah exactly, long term i want to get a UPS system, so being able to manage / monitor power to my NAS and other networking equipment will be super critical, especially if it goes down when you're away from the device. -
HexOS Home assistant integration (Not Server)
Theo replied to Theo's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
The fact that the goal is we log into the command centre for a centralised login should mitigate that? Plus with a local UI coming, whether it's an api key, Mqtt, or another method, i'm sure a local only method would still be viable. -
So @Midnight2ss turns out it's part of the boot install - was able to select my existing two boot drives from my TN setup for mirrored boot.

My mistake when i looked before the Pcie cards were pretty cheap. Just realised they were only 20Gbps for ~ $20

Death by popularity! Bitter sweet haha
-
@RobotsNeverDie Stupid question, but wouldn't using thunderbolt 4/5 Simplify this all? especially as your systems are in the same room?
-
Yeah was curious if that was / will show up in the set up process. Or will come later down the line as part of there snapshot features. Would assume they’re mutually exclusive but who knows.
-
@Midnight2ss do you have dual boot drives?
-
Awesome! i would like but still blocked...
