This would be a nice feature. A lot of people struggle with reverse proxy setup.

Nice!

Hopefully in a few years we have this same conversation about switching over to 40gbe 🤣
Or low power 10 gbe.
https://www.servethehome.com/new-intel-e610-nics-shown-for-low-power-10gbase-t-and-2-5gbe/
It will take some time until we will see the NIC chip in prosumer products. But it is promissing.
Watching my low power 10 gbe network speeds while doing nothing 🤣

After that, it's not gonna make a huge difference 😂
I think you are right, but it is still tempting to try a 10 gbe network 😉. But I don't do video editing or things like that. So probably after the first backup my 10 gbe network will do nothing most of the time. For me the upgrade from 1 gbe to 2,5 gbe feels like a major upgrade. And from an energy use perspective 2,5 gbe is more the sweetspot.
-
I am thinking about a small network upgrade. The backbone of my network is already 10 gbe (SPF+). But my main network is still 2,5 gbe. I have a Mikrotik router and 2 Mikrotik switches in a 10 inch rack. I like to add a 10 gbe copper switch. I have already a few devices with a 10 gbe NIC on board.
2,5 gbe is nice, but 10 gbe is the extended version of nice 🙂

one of my many hobbies includes massively overthinking my homelab
I have the same hobby 🙂. But the good news is, a homelab is never finished. There always will be new hardware.

I can’t test this right now. I have to upgrade my switch to 10 gbe first.

Hello,
I successfully installed HexOS using UTM on macOS with an Apple M3 CPU (ARM). UTM, which is built on QEMU, allows you to emulate* a different architecture if you’re running something other than ARM. In this case, it was used to emulate x86_64, which is required for HexOS.
Notes:
• Disable UEFI: Ensure UEFI is disabled in the hypervisor template.
• Use BIOS: During the HexOS installation process, do not enable UEFI; choose BIOS instead.
• Add Pool Drives Later: Pool drives (IDE) were added after the initial setup. If this step is not followed, the deck may not be able to locate the local server.
• App Installation: Apps were added via the TrueNAS interface because the HexOS installation was failing at 60%.
• Hardware Settings:
• Architecture: x86_64
• System: Standard PC (Q35 + ICH9, 2009) (alias of pc-q35-9.1) (q35)
• Emulated Display Card: virtio-vga-gl (GPU Supported)
Thank you for this guide. I was able to install HexOs in UTM on a M3.

Can you make a screenshot of your VM hardware tab?

Exciting update! My AOOSTAR WTR MAX, which I ordered on April 2, 2025, has finally shipped as of May 29, 2025. I'm planning to re-use some existing hard drives, but for RAM and cache, I'm considering the following:
-
RAM: Kingston Fury Impact 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-5600 (Spec Sheet)
-
Cache SSD: Crucial P3 Plus 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD (Product Page)
What do you all think? Are these solid picks, or would you recommend something better?
@freid, please keep us updated. You are one of the first who can play with the WTR MAX! I am really curious about your experiences with this device.

It's not recommended to run TrueNas updtaes since it can break HexOs.

JellyFin will be one of the first apps which will be added to HexOsin Q3.
See Quote latest HexOs status update:
Jellyfin & App Updates Coming in Q3
While we have plans for improvements to both Plex and Immich in our future, I wanted to take a moment to make a public commitment now that our next curated app will be Jellyfin. This completely free and open source solution has a sleek user interface has been a breath of fresh air for many, and I hope to even get Linus from LTT to use it in the not-too-distant future.

Could this be linked to reinstall vs reclaim?
Those cases which I noticed which wiped the drives were all reinstalls of Hexos as in this case.
Other cases w/o data loss were reclaims of an existing installation.
I didn't look into every single case, but this was a pattern I noticed.
I noticed also this pattern.

very cool setup.
One recommendation, since you are using a perviously used and older ssd as your boot drive, look into auto backing up your truenas config file maybe in the cloud.
In case the boot drive fails itll just make the process slightly less painful.
That said its probably a good idea for everyone to do thisA backup of the Truenas config file is always a good idea. What you could consider is to buy two 128 GB sata SSDs and use them as OS mirror. You can buy a TLC sata 128 gb SSD for approx. 10 to 15 euros. I expect the $ price will be the same. You have a very nice system with pretty good components. I would spend the extra $30,-
Just my 2 cents

I have the same issue with my Lincstation N2. My 10 gbe port shows up as 5 gbe. I didn't do a deep dive yet. I wil run some network test later on.

@ulfn, I have another question for you. What is your experience with the cooling of your newly build SFF NAS? And how about the noise?

@Dylan, another SFF NAS device:

I like it anyway 😀.
For someone like you, a 3d printer could be a nice adition to your toolsset. When I read your SFF journey I see a lot of experimenting and out of the box thinking.

In the topic ”What new gear are you interested in” by @Dylan I mentioned I had a little project on the side.
So I got me a Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB RAM, with two possible use cases. First alternative is to place it in my sister’s apartment for an off site backup, together with a 5TB Lacie Rugged USB drive for storage. Second alternative and maybe more exciting is to use it for a Nextcloud setup.
There is a specific Pi OS for this - Nextcloud Pi. I even found a video describing a setup like this:
Many years ago I bought a wooden case for an earlier version of the Pi I had also got. That never came to any use, but at least I got to know there are nicer cases out there. So with this new Raspberry Pi 5 I ordered, from Germany, a case specific for the Pi 5:
Did you 3D print the bottom of the case yourself?

I have this same experience. The NAS functionality is pretty stable.
