  3. I may be an edge case but I've been in IT for 24 years. Just because I CAN get stuff done at the command line does not mean I want to, if it can be made easier, especially when I'm at home and just trying to get movies up for my kids to watch. Dig? I get paid to do this stuff and no one is paying me to do it at home. Further, the thought of paying an Apple or whomever, just doesn't sit right with me. So, DIY home NAS that's simple to set up and manage for $99? Yes, please and I'll take two while were at it.

  4. Integrated default reverse proxy for docker apps so all apps available on 443 inside home network. integrated DNS to support app name.internaldomain.com with reverse proxy (this puts all apps on 443) Lets encrypt SSL by default for all apps all user has to do is buy domain name and enter it above and all just works support for split horizon DNS consider running the DNS service for folks to allow tight integration (this shouldn't preclude use of other dns services) this is not me advocating for how to expose anything externally, that's not an argument i want to get into 😉

  6. LOL...can we un/officially code name HexOS "KISS"? I'd settle for just the beta, but there's something there in the branding. Just sayin'...

  7. YES! This right here. I do tetchy brain workie hard stuff all day for work. I *could* learn TrueNAS, but I want something that is reliable and performant without my having to think about it, or worry about having to spend hours researching trying to fixing things if something does break. I am choosing to go the easy route. K.I.S.S

  8. The idea is HexOS for average people, non tech savvy and can't be bother or too complicated for them to learn setup NAS server. With this easy of use software, everyone can setup their own NAS server and be done for it. And yes, this is not for everyone, especially for tech savvy out there who can be able to build their own NAS with no difficulty at all.

  9. Hi there! Firstly a disclaimer: I'm a designer and not a developer, so I'm not vell versed in the TrueNAS/Linux underpinnings, what Im about to say might not be possible! In the future we might be looking at options to reduce the system requirements for lets say a 2-bay NAS that only needs regular RAID, but its not in the plans right now.

  11. sorry for the duplicated thread, I realized this would be a better place to put it... This took a while, and I want to just try to restate it from memory. Prereqs: -A Domain (That you can change the name servers of i.e namecheap) -A host (I used Github pages, ymmv with other providers or self hosting) -Cloudflared (Can be downloaded through trueNAS) I just want to get out this information because its worked really well for me. https://youtu.be/ey4u7OUAF3c?si=1FdVMGuXJts5OTu_ You want to use this networkchuck video to get cloudflared setup, when you click the docker option you can just copy the auth token part of the command and copy it to the trueNAS setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AgT4NHeg58 Then you want to setup your github pages using this video. With this things have become so much simplier, i can easily access the plex and immich that im hosting on hexos. setting up immich on iOS means instead of typing out an IP with a port i can enter immich,mydomain.com and ive actually made a webpage for mydomain.com with links for all of this so if im ever on a new device its so simple. I hope yall find this as useful as i have. and if anyone could make a better in-depth guide be my guest, I'd like there to be one that doesn't neccisarily rely on youtube videos that could be taken down.

  12. Hi Folks, This post will go over the basic requirements for running HexOS, then cover a few frequently asked questions. If you come across frequently asked questions that are not included in the main post please comment below! NOTE: Please keep comments here directly related to the post/FAQ itself. and create separate topics to discuss specific use cases and issues. Thanks! Updated 12/4/24 ---------------------------------------------------- Minimum Hardware Requirements: x86 compatible hardware (Intel or AMD) (HexOS is NOT ARM or RISC-V compatible) 64 bit Processor with 2+ cores 8GB or more of system memory 16GB boot SSD Larger is OK, but not necessary. 3+ storage drives recommended 2 storage drives is the current minimum. (Pools created with 2 drives are not expandable. See details below.) Single drive configurations are not supported at this time. Please visit https://hexos.com/early-access-faq for more info Also, please check out the roadmap web page for info on upcoming features; https://hexos.com/blog/the-road-to-10 ------------------------------------------------------- FAQ: Q: Can I install HexOS on a virtual machine? A: Yes. While HexOS is meant to be installed on physical hardware, it can be ran as a VM. Please see TrueNAS SCALE documentation for details on running TrueNAS as a VM. Q: can I install HexOS on a UGREEN or ASUSTOR NAS? A: Yes. To the best of my knowledge, UGREEN and ASUSTOR NAS devices all support installing 3rd party operating systems. Google "Installing TrueNAS on [insert brand name here] NAS" to find guides and forum posts with other users experiences. Q: Can I install HexOS on my old Synology NAS or Netgear Ready NAS? A: No. Unfortunately many consumer NAS solutions do not support installation of 3rd party operating systems. NOTE: It appears that some Ready NAS devices are capable of using 3rd party operating systems through advanced techniques, but the jury is out currently on exactly which models, and whether or not the hardware is performant enough for a good user experience. Q: Can I run HexOS on a Raspberry Pi or equivalent? A: No. Raspberry Pi devices are built using ARM processors. HexOS requires x86 hardware. Q: Can I start with only a few (3+) drives and expand later? A: Yes.You can add more drives of the same capacity to a pool to increase its available space. Q: Can I expand my storage pool if I started with only 2 drives? A: No. While OpenZFS has support for expanding a 2-device RAIDz1, that capability has not been enabled in TrueNAS SCALE. Q: Can I set up a storage pool using a single hard drive? A: No. Single drive configurations are not supported at this time This may change in the future, but either way it is discouraged due to single drive configurations being susceptible to data loss from hardware failure. Q: Can storage pools use drives with different capacities without loosing space? A: No. While mismatched drives can be used, in any one pool the maximum usable capacity per drive is limited by the size of the smallest drive in that pool. Example: A storage pool with 5x 256GB SSDs and 1x 250GB SSD will have the same usable capacity as a pool with 6x 250GB drives. Q: Can I change small drives our for larger ones to increase my storage pool's capacity? A: Yes. Drives can be exchanged one at a time to gradually copy all the data onto larger drives, Once all drives have been exchanged the pool's capacity will grow all at once. Example: Lets say we have a pool with 6x10TB drives in RAIDz1, and we swap those out one by one for six 20TB units. When the last 20 TB drive has been installed, and the pool has finished re-silvering (copying data to a drive to re-construct the pool) then the pool's total capacity will jump from ~50TB usable to ~100TB usable!

  13. NginxProxyManager and Tailscale are great but I'd personally love to see a built in setting for Cloudflare Tunnels. I recently did a setup for UpTimeKuma, which has it built in and it was gloriously easy. I can see how it might overlap with your paid business model but just throwing my coins in the wishing well.

  14. I believe integrating Home Assistant with HexOS could be a game-changer for the operating system, offering functionality that is sorely lacking in almost all other OS platforms today. A Home Assistant integration would allow users to monitor and manage their NAS more effectively. Imagine being able to track critical metrics such as system uptime, array health, disk health checks, and the overall status of your storage systems — all from within Home Assistant. Furthermore, adding control features would significantly enhance the user experience. It would be fantastic if users could automate tasks like rebooting or stopping/starting applications, VMs, or containers directly through Home Assistant. Additionally, automating disk spin-downs during off-peak hours for power savings would be a powerful and eco-friendly feature. The potential of Home Assistant integration is vast, and it's difficult to fully capture all the possibilities in a single topic. However, the core idea is simple: having such an integration, with continuous updates and new features, would be a major advantage for HexOS. While most other operating systems either lack similar functionality or offer only basic, limited capabilities, HexOS could stand out by providing a more comprehensive, user-friendly, and flexible solution.

  15. Is there a way to contribute to the codebase? I'm sure we have quite a lot of talent surfing the forum, probably a lot of them are familiar with truenas as well. Is there a development plan for an app creation tool? If that's not a thing I'm good with that just curious. Can hardly wait for my invite. Got a pair of licenses that at least one of is ready to get put to use!

  16. Anecdotally, but hands on, I have a minisforum with a Celeron J4125 and 8 gigs of RAM and I've had no issues with transcoding on Plex or Jellyfin for the past 2 years. Both are running on docker with hardware passthrough, though I almost exclusively used Plex. This includes hosting a watch together for which my local device could direct play the file, but the remote party had to transcode and Plex pulling subtitles via OpenSubs on the fly. Subtitles specifically have never given me any great issue, except when they weren't available altogether. I was living in Germany until recently and without fail, my bottleneck was always my Internet connection (Crappy 5G internet, but my only other option was 6 meg vDSL). Power draw of that server was negligible and it has twice the TDP of the N100. Despite the lower power draw of the N100, it will soundly beat my J4125 on any benchmark or hardware data point. Additionaly, it has newer encode hardware for h.264/5 and more audio codecs. I mention that last bit because I have seen the Celeron occasionally struggle with audio, which results in forcing a partial transcode for all parties. All that being said, I do take some care in ensuring my media is all in the most compatible formats for the devices I'm serving (Mostly Roku and Apple TV), but that's just some time in Handbrake and trolling forums for what other users have found to work well. All that being said, both the n100 and i5-9500T are fine choices for relatively low power servers. I chose my celeron for power concerns and have never regretted it. The only thing I would say you should consider is expansion. The i5, in addition to generally being the beefier processor, will be capable of handling more memory should you want to expand that down the road. Those EliteDesk style PCs, in my experience, will typically only take a single stick of memory, but they can go full tilt on a 32 or 64 gig stick. I have a SFF PC on standby for Hex that can take 2 sticks, so ymmv. For those reading this wondering if they goofed by getting a n100 instead of an older i5, I would say you have nothing to worry about, the nice thing about this category of home server is there are very few wrong answers, just caveats that may be worth considering. A far cry from my early days of tinkering where the best I could get was a Pentium 3 with 128 megs of RAM. It's a good time to be an enthusiast.

  17. the main work around is to get something like a tp link wifi extender with an ethernet port but they hurt power efficiency compared to built in wifi and they are also more flakey from my experience

  18. thanks truenas/hexos does not support wifi so i have to use lan. For a casual user like myself i would be plenty happy if wifi worked and i could stick the server in a corner that is out of they way. hopefully its a feature thatll be implemented in a few years.

  19. Sorry, if this has been asked before & posted elsewhere. Would be handy to have app support for steam caching, especially for big/medium family's/house hold share. I can understand this will not be on the radar as yet, while sorting other issues out/beta etc

  21. Setting this up myself in my homelab was a mayor pain, and I'm still not completely satisfied with the results. Also I feel not confident enough in my IT security skills to maintain and expose these services to the internet, so I only did it locally. While it probably would be alright, a build-in version, made by people that know what they are doing would be great! Streamlining the process of securely accessing services without VPN would surely be nice and adds a ton of value! Using e.g. Plex, Nextcloud, Paperless and all the other great services on the fly could make other subscription services obsolete.

  22. Hello all. I live in Deland Florida, that's north of Orlando. I have been a Technoid for as long as I can remember. My first computer was a Kim-1 that i buillt. I went from there to a Ohio Scientific 6502 machine. I then switched to Radio Shack TRS-80. I ran a Pascal support BBS and wrote door games and utilities for Sysops for 18 years starting in 1984 using RBBS on a Model 1 Trash80. BBS software I used was RBBS, Spitfire, Proboard, AptXbbs (OS2). After moving to Orlando I switch to OS2 for a while, my clam to fame or my stupidity (don't now which to embrace) was that i had 42 phone line BBS in Orlando. I had always been into Linux for years before and it only got worse as BBS system gave way to the internet. I started out as a pipe fitter and controls system specialists. I now work for Trane Technologies and I design and program and commission both software and graphics for HVAC Automation Control system I do work for NASA, Hospitals and Schools. I also am big into music and music production. I toured as a second job when i was young as a roadie for ShowCo this let me work with some really cool bands in the mid 70 thru the late 80's. I ran sound for the USO at base's in IRAQ during the war in 2005 to mid 2007. Got to run sound for Toby Keith and Taylor Swift several times while I was there. I have a small studio in my house that i do mix and mastering for local bands most of my work right now is bands in Europe. Anyone have music they need to master just give me a yell. This is one of the main reason for my NAS systems, backup for my music files and also my media library. FYI The graphic logo is from my studio name I picked Phat Dragon Studios HA!!

  23. no, you don't have to, just simply disconnect your old server so HexOS could not see your server anymore, and there will be a button to disconnect after that, your license is free and be able to setup HexOS on another server.
    1 point
  24. You don’t, the license is not attached to the hardware. You would have to just remove it from the previous server and then apply it to the next one

  25. the minimum requirement for HexOS is 8GB of RAM, so you can use 2x4GB of RAM with no problem. but if you plan to use some extra application on this server, having more RAM won't hurt

  27. In general its not recommended to us external storage. if plex is too bloated you can try jellyfin 1gb tvs are actually pretty good lol, most tvs i come across have 100mb nics to the best of my knowledge rebuilding arrays are incredibly stressful for the remaining drives and doing it multiple times risk drive failure. im actually not sure if hexos/truenas will automatically increase pool size if you replace the smallest drive with a bigger drive. it would be great if it does

  28. Fair. Would have liked an autio import or at least an indicator of some sorts. Like: "Foreign Pool detected". Too bad most of the beta participants all have some experience in handling poolconfiguration (and setup and find some other way), because I would have loved to see an equivalent of the easy Synology DSM way of prepping disks on a running system. *fingers crossed it arrives prior to 1.0

  30. Yes you can migrate your license to another machine. Just unplug your old server or simply shutdown so the Deck cannot see that server, and then the option to Disconnect your old server will appears. All you have to do is click that button, and your license is free to use again at another machine. On top of that, your old server will still be functional, all your config and files still intacts. You can access it via TrueNAS UI. It just no longer being managed by HexOS.

  34. As an addendum to my previous post as well, speaking to ARM based systems which aren't directly supported by TrueNAS (which is correct), there always exists the possibility of utilizing an ARM to x86 interpreter through something like VMWare or AArch64 to have HexOS deployed in a virtual machine that presents to HexOS as x86 and the interpreter/emulator will do the leg work to convert the commands to run on the ARM hardware (This has only been recently possible with Windows on ARM being viable now). Yes you will be losing some processing speed and efficiency but on many ARM based servers this would likely go unnoticed for the use cases of this type of setup if say a home based business was able to acquire an older enterprise grade ARM server on the cheap. As I've mentioned above I am known for integrating hardware and software together that was never designed to work with one another and have had numerous successes in doing so. I have a keen interest in hardware repurposing and reducing e-waste while still maintaining modern best practice's as much as possible. This is exactly the reason I got involved with HexOS because it has a ton of potential in providing several uses for repurposed hardware. PS. I generally ignore "recommended specifications" lists, they are all generally overly conservative in their estimations as to ensure full functionality with headroom. (which I get is necessary for businesses to do so as to avoid pushback if/when something doesn't work).

  41. I jumped with three licenses because of the Cyber Monday deal, but then I watched some more and realized that this is going to come with a stripped-down local dashboard (at best). I'm not concerned about missing features during development, but running with a cloud dashboard or ANYTHING like that is a complete non-starter for me from a security perspective. (Typically people who self-host often do so for security or privacy reasons.) Can you comment on this, specifically addressing the privacy and security concerns, and especially specifying the priority level of a local dashboard instead of cloud? Because, to be honest, it sounds like it won't be finished before the 30 day refund period is done, so I am taking a big chance that this will not end up working for me.

  42. A downside is that much of the history is hidden from the world/search and so others comming across the same issues later can struggle. There are even services (such as linen.dev from a quick google) that try to bridge that.

  44. I spoke too soon. I got the sale price. I have had an unexpected victory and acquired a HexOS license! So happy right now. The way it works: I received an email half an hour ago that told me I'd received $100 credit in my account here. Go through normal purchase process, but when you get to "How do you want to pay?" Choose Account Credit (not CC or Paypal). Proceed with the sale process, and it completes. Then you restart the sale process, this time you'll have the credit already applied, and choose CC or Paypal for the $99 payment. I used a one-time disposable CC number (from Revolut) and it worked fine.

  46. i don't think you should expect native support for advanced battery management (like windows has), deep sleep states etc, so i wouldn't use this as an actual laptop if you're only speaking about using this as a "always connected PC that happens to have a screen and a battery attached to it", then yeah sure. your only problem would be connecting the HDDs to your laptop, but that can be solved with a m.2 to sata adapter from AliExpress or something
