NAS server with distant back-up

Question

Posted

I do need to figure something about a way of data safety. Can I have 2 servers on the same license, that are linked together ?

I mean, that these 2 distant servers can protect each others from data lost in case of one unit is broken ( is burned, stolen or crushed in some ways for example ).

I would like to remove the need of having a cloud for a third safety step, to backup the files of the server in case of a physical damage...

From what I understand, you’re looking to have one primary server and a backup server, either in the same location or a different one.

If this is what you’re aiming for, I recommend taking a look at Proxmox Cluster. You can set up HexOS as a VM and pass everything through, including your drives, etc. This allows you to configure it as needed and makes it easy to migrate from one server to another.

I don’t think HexOS natively supports this feature, and if it does, I doubt it would work with just one license. I’m happy to be corrected on this, but the solution above should work. It is, however, more suited for advanced users, which might conflict with the primary audience for HexOS. That said, I found HexOS much more intuitive than other NAS operating systems I’ve tried.

That's what I'm concerned about, I do want to have multiple dedicated servers ( one at home and the other one at my office ) under the same account preferably ... Not having to add HexOs into an other system that will backup it ... adding a lot more complexity and monitoring ( not suitable for noobs like me ... haha )

I see, this might be a bit challenging. With Proxmox Cluster, you can use the “Start Failure Policy”. This feature allows your server to move from one node to another in case of a failure to start or other issues. However, setting this up can be quite complex and might get confusing.

You could reach out to the admins to see if they plan to release a similar feature in the future, but as of now, I don’t believe TrueNAS has this capability.

I hope this helps!

They should be able to see every post, and I believe they’ll take a look when they’re free. They’ve been very busy lately, especially with the launch.
