Can I install HexOS in a virtual machine?

While HexOS is meant to be installed on physical hardware, it is based on TrueNAS SCALE, which does support use in a virtualized environment. For additional details on how to install HexOS in a VM, please see the TrueNAS SCALE documentation.

You may be better off checking Facebook marketplace or something for an older used pc to test/play around with. But this is just a guess. As it’s in beta so having it hosted elsewhere may or may not cause further issues.

you can occasionally visit a local computer store. They might be willing to let you have a computer they were planning to recycle. However, they might remove the hard drive. It would be more advisable to obtain fresh, unused drives for the computer.

I have 4 500GB SSDs I could use, main thing for me is I need to have the server be as power efficient as possible while still being able to run the occasional game servers and downloading Linux isos
