jerod Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Our designer and developer can’t agree: where should toggles go in the UI?
Mobius Posted July 9 Posted July 9 after almost 2 deacdes of using ios and android, the right side just feels way more at home.
rnica Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Right side but the toggles should closer to the words like they are on the Left version. half the width of a monitor is too far away 9
Squall Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I prefer the left side. The right one is nice-ish, but it looks like a bad port from a phone app's settings screen. The distance shown on the right one between the labels and toggles decouple them from one another, you have to start counting from the top to make sure you select the correct toggle - I want to turn Blabla on, it's 7th from the top, time to start counting the toggles ... 1, 2, 3, 4 ... You should not need to relay on sliding your finger perfictaly level across the screen with out any deviation to select the correct toggle. That's bad UI, that's bad design. Keep the goal in mind. The appeal of HexOS is simplification and ease of use in creating and managing a NAS. The Right is pretty, but with the distances that the toggles are at in that picture, you are significantly increasing the chance of toggling on/off the wrong thing. It'll get annoying for the sake of form and forgetting that is needs to function as an easy to use UI. Phones can use the right one because of the smaller screen size, but it dose not work well on larger screens like on a desktop or laptop. I am reminded of the favored saying of my middle school English teacher: K.I.S.S - Keep It Simple Stupe... ndous. Yea, stupendous, that is definitely how that ended. Having the toggles on the left with the label just next to it removes the chances of accidentally toggling the wrong thing. Using the indentations as shown in the image is similar to the way file structures and categorization trees are depicted. It's a familiar design that works, looks good, it's space efficient, and dose not create a lot of empty dead space for no good reason. 1
Avari Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I prefer on the left with the indentations, looks cleaner and more orderly to me. It makes it easier to have the same distance between the text and the toggles and still look good, also should be pretty independent of screen resolution. If the toggles are on the right you can't have a uniform distance without it looking like a mess so it ends up with the text aligned on the left and the toggles on the right which will leave at least some of them too far away from the text if the labels are not uniformly short. Also, like others said, if it ends up with the toggles on the right they need to be much closer to the text. In the right picture you would have to concentrate to pick the correct toggle. 1

Soid Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I voted left because of the compactness, but I probably would have voted right if they were closer to the words like others suggested. 1
Ricky_Bobby510 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 On the right but with the layout of the left. close, and indentation based on grouping. 2
BugsBunny4898 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 (edited) I prefer the gray background like the Left, but prefer the layout on the right. But the buttons can be closer to the text, I have a large 2k monitor and don't want everything to spread out. Edited July 9 by BugsBunny4898 because i'm stupid 2
theolaa Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I'm surprised the vote is as split as it is, but I'd echo others and say the right is better, although the toggle should be closer to the words.
pedrotski Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Right of course. On the left seems logical with the example text, but with the toggle on the right you can have paragraphs of text and the toggle wouldnt look out of place.
kerfoster2 Posted July 11 Posted July 11 I prefer the toggles on the left, but the style of the right image more. I like the black background with the narrow border more than the grey background.

ShinobiRen Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Right side toggles but closer to the settings (words) they accompany. Thanks!
Squazz Posted July 16 Posted July 16 (edited) Right But I like the gray background better on the left image Edited July 16 by Squazz
Nick0G Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Toggles just need to be closer to the words, hate trying to track my finger across the screen to see what toggle is for what item
Mawson Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Right. This follows standard English language right to left reading convention, and logical convention of presenting what a thing is, followed by what you can do with/about it. "Setting: [ON/OFF]" Makes sense to my brain "[ON/OFF] Setting" Seems backwards

jerod Posted July 28 Author Posted July 28 Thank you all for the responses on this. We had a lot of fun going through them, and we will incorporate the feedback in the next UI pass. 2
