Access hexos remote

Question

Posted

What would be the best way to access the server remotely? I need to have access to some of the drives when I'm abroad. I don't care too much about plex remote, but I hope immich does work remotely. Haven't been able to test this one out properly. I read a bit that you have to do this via vpn possibly. Can I use protonvpn for this? I don't really have a third computer to screenshare with. Just my macbook and the server.

I'm not saying it is right for your situation but I have been using Tailscale for remote access to Immich and the NAS storage itself.  I picked it because someone did a pretty good install guide and posted it.  Again, I;m not saying it the best for you.  I can say though that for someone who doesn't know squat about TrueNAS or Linux or Docker containers and the like, I can saw it worked first try.  I am curious if anyone wants to volunteer some alternatives.  I believe Cloudflare is sprinkled throughout the forum as well as the general concept of reverse proxy and port forwarding.

Tailscale or Wireguard as a VPN are the safest options.

If you want a public domain, so that you can access it from any device, you first need a public domain and a reverse proxy (Nginx Proxy Manager, Traefik, Caddy). However this is pretty much a security risk without hardening, so you likely want to use cloudflare, a good firewall (ditch your ISP router and go for OpnSense or OpenWRT) and MMO Fail2Ban like Crowdsec. There are still other ways to secure your network (VLAN, DMZ etc.). VPN is the quickest with little setup, domain is the more versatile with a loooooot more setup to do to not risk your data.
