Are Locations doing anything under the hood?

What the title says, mostly been using TrueNas Scale directly but i still like having the HexOs dashboard available so i was wondering if the folder that show in Settings -> Locations do anything for performance/storage or if its just suggested locations for your files.

Is there a listing of default folder names that the items in locations will match with? I'd like to create folders in my TrueNAS to match.
