Licence terms / use.

Question

Posted

Maybe this question will be answered tomorrow with the download. But will the lifetime licence be limited / locked to only one hardware system. I.e if I want a remote back up I control, can the same licence be used, or would this constitute a ‘new’ lifetime licence?

Lifetime licenses are issued per server.  You can "disconnect" a server from HexOS and free up that license for use on another.  If you want two systems for remote backup, you would need two licenses.

Thanks, understood and appreciate that.

Obviously happy to support you guys and buy another, but would have to wait until I get the first system up before I can set the other one up too.

I’d say it would be great to have a discount for those who want/need to a second licence for the same situation in the future (or matching the early bird price) but appreciate that’s just a bias opinion haha.

thanks for the reply.

If I'm transferring my license between servers, how does the Disconnect process work?  If I wanted to replace an server with a new one, is there some kind of "grace period" for the transfer, so I can have both servers running at the same time to move my data to the new one?

I’m interested in whether there will be a ‘migrate’ tool or option to transfer other settings to a new server, eliminating the need to create new users, reinstall applications, and settings basic system settings. Such as static IP addresses and such

Just added this section to the Terms on the website to be more clear:

Hardware Transfers
HexOS licenses enable users to claim servers for management.  A claimed server deducts an available license from your account.  If you wish to move your license to a new server, you must first disconnect the server from HexOS, which will return the availability of the license for claiming purposes.

So, it doesn't sound like there is current consideration for migration with a single license. I'd wager that, over time, a temp license (or some other work around) would be given to remain fair for honest use cases. On the flip, licenses are still only $99 so maybe buy an extra just in case.

Bought another licence anyway! 🤣

Is the lifetime option only for early adopters and / or the beta?  Will I be able to purchase another lifetime license a year from now?  Would other non-early adopters be able to purchase a year from now?

Could you clarify what exactly "You can "disconnect" a server from HexOS " means?

- Does the system need to be always online to be "connected" to the license server? What about offline usage?

- What is the license tied to (HW id, serial number of some component....)? Or is dynamically checked against central licensing server?

- How will the VM licensing work? I know you said it is not officially supported but you are selling to home labbers - what do you expect 😉

- Online preview/demo? You are asking quiet big money for a few screenshots and promises

Just quoting this from their website, but it seems like you will be able to purchase a lifetime license at an increased price later.

Early Access pricing for Lifetime after the promotion ends: $199 per server.

Regular pricing after Early Access ends: $299 per server.

Users will receive early access to the HexOS Beta in stages, beginning on 11/29/2024.
Invites will continue in waves to test infrastructure stability and scalability.

This would be an awesome feature, especially for those whose setup is more Frankenstein's monster than a nice rack build.

It may actually be a thing that wouldn’t be too hard to setup but I’m not sure. This is on their website hexos.com

Likely once already setup you will have a 10 days to move or something like that. Even better would be if they had a migration tool at some point to transfer all settings such as ip addresses, users, data, and such and with that it would also transfer the license without any problems

That would be a dream migration . I'll settle for stability and ease of use up front today and hope for the better migration tools further down the line. They'll get there...

I guess my question from this would be, what happens to a Disconnected Server?  Does it just stop working/go offline until reconnected to a license again?  Or, some kind of reduced functionality (certain features unavailable, etc.)?

Maybe it will be still useable and only manageable via the truenas dashboard?

I don't see the terms of the license on the purchase page.

Based on your description when I decide to upgrade my server the perpetual license I would buy now can be transferred to new hardware. Is that correct?

Just be careful. I found in my testing that if you disconnect the HexOS license and try to add it again, it goes through the initial setup process and wipes the zpool.

Right now you can skip pool creation by removing the drives during install.
