CrimsonBlade104 Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Hi all, I initially started with 2 HDDs in my pool not thinking I would fill it up that quickly, but I realized just as quickly that it wasn't going to be sufficient. I understand that HexOS doesn't currently allow for expansion beyond 2 drives if that was your original pool, but is there a way to configure a new drive *easily* via TrueNAS in a way that doesn't mess up with the HexOS install? Or would it be easier to just wipe the drives and restart from the pool creation? Or, if the ability to expand beyond the initial 2 drives is somewhat close to being launched, would it be better to just wait? Thanks! Quote
Sonic Posted January 28 Posted January 28 I don't expect that HexOs will facilitate an expension beyond 2 drives in the near future. This is not supported in ZFS (underlying filesystem). Single drive to mirror is possible, but you can’t change from mirror to raidz1 without backing up your data, destroying the existing pool, recreating the pool as raidz1 and then restoring your data from backup. 1 Quote
Dylan Posted January 28 Posted January 28 @CrimsonBlade104 If you were willing to use all new drives to expand the existing pool capacity, that could work. But is sounds like the easiest path for you, especially since you have relatively small pool, would be to back up with the drive capacity/quantity you think will best serve your needs over time. Good luck! Quote
ubergeek Posted January 28 Posted January 28 To my understandings of ZFS, adding a single drive to a current 2 drive array will only add redundancy. If you want to actually expand storage you will need to import 2 or 3 drives to make the pool work properly because at the minimum you'll need pairs to make a suitable pool. Quote
CrimsonBlade104 Posted January 28 Author Posted January 28 Thanks, everyone for the responses! I did forget to mention that I bought one extra new drive, the same as my previous 2 HDDs (4TB each), and that's the one I'm wanting to add (so I would have 3 x 4TB in my pool, now with room to grow). It looks like backing up my current data, wiping the pool, then restarting with this new setup would be the easiest method here. Thanks again! 1 Quote
