Is off-site backup automatically "buddy-backup" ?
PsychoWards replied to driveaholic's topic in Other Questions
Hey, 1 license is for 1 single server. Your use case would be 2 servers and thus 2 licenses. (because each server needs it own OS to be installed) However buddy backup is not yet available, you can however already today realise this using different ways, which do require a bit of setup. (but still a 2nd Hexos license) - Today

Hello people, after the first announcement last year by Linus i promptly jumped on the opportunity to purchase a license. Now I want to build my storage to retire my synology and do storage properly. I want to put a small PC with a few HDDs to my parents house to back up my storage at home. My parents don't need access to that PC nor do I want them to have any access to that data. Is this what they call the "buddy-backup" for which I need to buy a second license or is there a way to attach a second pc with a few HDDs to my main NAS with that one license? Quasi as a external drive just not attached via USB but over the internet? If that question has already been asked and answered please feel free to delete this or move it, but I was not able to find an answer by searching. Thanks a lot!

Anyone with some useful tips for configuring Immich? It seems a bit slow loading the thumbnails and the images don't seem full quality. I have a mixture of image formats, uploading form iphones, samsung phones, cameras etc. Seems to be different for each one. The server I built is quite powerful, should handle the images transcoding fine with a 3070 and a ryzen 5900x

Yeah the power savings from fiber is nothing to scoff at.

SFP+ to RJ45 are getting hooooot, they are using significantly more power compared to fibre optics.
-
im always for lower power products. im just afraid of how long itll take the drivers for that nic to be stable the x710 is still more problematic than the x540/550 that every uses
-
Or low power 10 gbe. https://www.servethehome.com/new-intel-e610-nics-shown-for-low-power-10gbase-t-and-2-5gbe/ It will take some time until we will see the NIC chip in prosumer products. But it is promissing. Watching my low power 10 gbe network speeds while doing nothing π€£

whenever these darn parts get here holiday weekend = slow shipping π₯² seems like only my new psu has shipped (old one didn't fit in the new case sadly or have enough sata power)

Hopefully in a few years we have this same conversation about switching over to 40gbe π€£

10Gbps is gimmicky for most users around here. If you're not editing directly off the NAS or have a lot of users accessing it, there is very likely no need to get 10Gbps, 2.5 Gbps is more than enough. But it's still fun to watch those high numbers, so if it's worth doing (2.5), it's worth overdoing (10) π
-
I think you are right, but it is still tempting to try a 10 gbe network π. But I don't do video editing or things like that. So probably after the first backup my 10 gbe network will do nothing most of the time. For me the upgrade from 1 gbe to 2,5 gbe feels like a major upgrade. And from an energy use perspective 2,5 gbe is more the sweetspot.
-
Once, you do the initial backup to your new low cost, not yet existing, but already way more thought out that you like to admit , server via buddy backup or ZFS replication task, you will see and notice the full speed. After that, it's not gonna make a huge difference π Also if you want a good GPU for AI or ML, used RTX3090 (non ti) can be bought for 600$/β¬ and likely delivery the best bang for buck. You're welcome π
-
10 gbe definitely sounds niiiiiceeeee. i just have no idea how to take advantage of it
-
It is nothing to do with HexOS or TrueNAS - you cannot use a Backblaze Personal Computer Backup account to back up a NAS. https://www.backblaze.com/computer-backup/docs/network-attached-storage-nas-devices If you want to use Backblaze to backup a NAS - any NAS - you need the appropriate account: https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/solutions/nas-backup

I am thinking about a small network upgrade. The backbone of my network is already 10 gbe (SPF+). But my main network is still 2,5 gbe. I have a Mikrotik router and 2 Mikrotik switches in a 10 inch rack. I like to add a 10 gbe copper switch. I have already a few devices with a 10 gbe NIC on board. 2,5 gbe is nice, but 10 gbe is the extended version of nice π
-
It really is always evolving. I'm sure it's only a matter of time till i decide i need hardware strong enough to run video generation ai or something else silly that i don't truly need. Any plans for your next upgrades?
-
I have the same hobby π. But the good news is, a homelab is never finished. There always will be new hardware.
-
one of my many hobbies includes massively overthinking my homelab so i have thought about if i am going to go rj45 or sfp π I think up until i can save up enough money to purchase my own home i will be going rj45 because of slightly higher ease with less permanent setups such as running it outside uncovered. part of my homelab upgrades includes switching over every part of my network to ubiquiti devices. its not cheap but i was looking at the unifi flex 10gbe or unifi flex 2.5g
-
Ah, I see that makes a lot of sense. Better safe then sorry and in comparison it's only a minor investment. Upgrading the network to 10Gbps isn't cheap, I understand that you don't want to buy it yet, especially if you cannot profit from it yet. If you eventually upgrade, will you be going the RJ45 path or go for SFP+ ? I've not found many affordable RJ45 10Gbps switches or at least not with many 10Gbps ports, but found some really affordable 8port SFP+ 10Gbps switches. I got myself SFP+ switches and Intel X540 NICs and I'm just using SFP+ to RJ45 for the connection to the 2.5Gbps switch (which is full RJ45). You probably haven't thought about that yet I imagine π

you are not wrongπ my poor bank account has been beat up by this server you are correct i am planning on doing a 3 way mirror. i don't think i will need the extra storage space on it and i don't think special/metadata vdev can be set to z1. I just don't want to risk 100tb+ of data getting lost because my ssd failed from my screwing around hence the high level of redundancy. At this time i don't even have a back up for most of the data because a 2nd one of these monsters is just too damn expensive but one day ill probably make a "low" cost backup server itll probably be made with the absolute cheapest hardware i can find and filled with refurb hdds i also forgot to mention i put off purchasing a intel x550 nic at this time. it will be added eventually but im in no rush. at this time nothing else at home has anything higher than 1gb ethernet and my main computer is a laptop of wifi so no point getting 10gb ethernet for that either.
-
Seeing the drives and components, the 265k build title could also be understood as the price for the server. π π π So, did I understood correctly that you want to do a 3 drive mirror with the 980 Pros ? Why not do a Z1 instead ? You really want the double redundancy? π

I forgot to post in this thread but the idle power was somehwere around 60-80w i forget but that aside im super excited, i finally found some deals on the parts i was looking for and will finally be (almost) completing my nas I ordered my jonsbo n5 yesterday and the a few more hdds i will also be trying to push the jonsbo n5 to the limit by modifying it to hold more hdds. Im not confident but im hoping itll work. new parts list below Cpu - Core Ultra 265k Cpu Cooler- Thermalright Frost Spirit 140 Mobo - Asus Z890M-Plus Prime WiFi Realtek RTL8125 2.5gb Ram - 4 x Gskill Ripjaws m5 48gb 5200mhz cl 40 Storage 3 x 16 tb Seagate skyhawk ai hdd 7 x 14 tb Seagate exos hdd 5 x 14tb Western Digital ultra star hdd 2 x 2 tb Samsung 980 pro ssd (looking for one more so i can do a 3 way mirror special drive for my main storage pool for fun) 2 x Intel Pro 5400s 240 GB (boot drive) 2 x Intel Pro 5400s 240 GB (apps pool) PSU - Super Flower LEADEX VII Platinum PRO 850 W case fans - 5x Arctic P12 Pro The plan is to drill some holes into the case so that these phanteks drive caddies will fit. I've been using my Hexos server as a test server but i think its finally time i set it up as my main machine. im going to be doing 1 pool of 2 z2 vdevs that are 6 wide and made of 14tb drives for main storage pool (later i will add triple mirror ssd for special drive) 1 z1 pool of 3x16tb drives for 2nd storage pool 1 mirror pool of 2x 240gb for my apps pool

Windows Server 2022 Install - Palworld Dedicated Server Setup
BartIV replied to ShinobiRen's topic in Show & Tell
Hello, I am very new to all this, for step 8. "Pre-req: have your ISO loaded into a store that libvirt-qemu has full access to" is this referring to windows ISO? What exactly is a store? When getting the windows ISO, do I need to do the Shell process as mentioned on their website? Thank you so much! -
Ah ok. Thanks for the replies.
