Hey, yes this is possible, someone already mentioned it in this forum however I don't have any details and it might not be as easily setup as Synology Drive Client. First of all, if it should be reachable over the Internet you either need to setup a VPN or a reversed proxy with a domain. This however is true for every service which you want to reach from the Internet and not limited to the drive replacement. But once you have this setup it's easily configured for Immich and your media player if needed. Immich is great, it's a free self hosted replacement for Google Photos. Concerning Buddy Backup it's foreseen to come this year, but you need a second (Hexos) server (and hexos licenses if you want to run it yourself) to backup to. But even without Buddy Backup, local backups to another Hexos/Truenas server is easily done using the replication tasks. You run do everything on the same server, this saves you the costs of having to run 2 servers and you only need to maintain 1 server. It's best to use Jellyfin or Plex (although Plex is alienating a lot of users recently which are switching to Jellyfin) on your server with an iGPU or dedicated GPU. As long as you have a decent GPU and not a lot of people streaming at the same time, performance impact is not an issue. Stay away from Realtek NICs (they are not supported and a lot of problems reported in this forum regarding connectivity or speed were solved by replacing the realtek NIC). If you need to get a new NIC, go for an Intel 2.5 or 10 Gbit/s NIC depending on your future network upgrade plans. Intel iGPUs are great for media streaming/transcoding and you don't need a dedicated GPU just for this. Immich does leverage a dedicated GPU for Machine Learning stuff but doesn't warrant a dedicated GPU just for this purpose. You need at least 2 data drives and 1 small boot drive. The boot drive can't be used for anything else then the OS so don't use a 1TB drive for this, a 16GB SSD is enough. With 2 data drives, Hexos is creating a mirrored pool which is not expandable in size, therefore you need to create a pool with at least 3 data drives to be able to expand in the future. Stay away from SMR drives (Desktop drives or WD RED (non plus, non pro)) make sure to only go for CMR drives. If you want to get new HW or reuse your existing server, you can post the components in here and you will get help to match the parts as best as possible and avoid certain pitfalls.

@TwoStroke How are you liking the Sliger NAS case? Do you like the hard drive mounting system? I have one of their 4u units for my main PC and I love it.

Thank you for the update. I watch a YouTube tutorial video and get jellyfin to work.

JellyFin will be one of the first apps which will be added to HexOsin Q3. See Quote latest HexOs status update: Jellyfin & App Updates Coming in Q3 While we have plans for improvements to both Plex and Immich in our future, I wanted to take a moment to make a public commitment now that our next curated app will be Jellyfin. This completely free and open source solution has a sleek user interface has been a breath of fresh air for many, and I hope to even get Linus from LTT to use it in the not-too-distant future.

support Will HexOS reformat my drives if I re-add the server?

HexOS is officially still in Beta, and they're planning to release more by the end of the year. I know that doesn't help you now, but 🤷♀️ Beta. I'm in the same boat about JellyFin I gave up because it was just too much for me, and now just hanging out waiting.

I noticed also this pattern. -
A backup of the Truenas config file is always a good idea. What you could consider is to buy two 128 GB sata SSDs and use them as OS mirror. You can buy a TLC sata 128 gb SSD for approx. 10 to 15 euros. I expect the $ price will be the same. You have a very nice system with pretty good components. I would spend the extra $30,- Just my 2 cents

Could this be linked to reinstall vs reclaim? Those cases which I noticed which wiped the drives were all reinstalls of Hexos as in this case. Other cases w/o data loss were reclaims of an existing installation. I didn't look into every single case, but this was a pattern I noticed. -
Stuck on the Looking for servers page

I had the same issue. I had it plugged into an access point. When I instead plugged it directly into my router it showed up. -
I haven't actually looked into how to do this myself. I'm still running a test server 😅 I would probably just follow along to a youtube video. Officially yes but there are workarounds for at least maintaining your storage. i'm not sure yet how nicely hexos plays with restoring app setups for config files.

I had a similar issue. I originally used Ventoy to boot the HexOS ISO. Once I used balenaEtcher it worked fine, even in UEFI mode.

There is an API under the hood. https://api.hexos.com E.g. to restart HexOS it's POST to https://api.hexos.com/server/yourserverid/restart But without API keys you'd have to use cookies and because it's not public it could change at any moment.

I should probably have thought of a grinder, but my rack is underneath an IKEA butchers block which is my desk, so I didn't want to set that on fire. Or the carpeted floor in my office....
-
Oooh this is a *very* good idea. I will get onto this right away. Do you have any recommended tutorials on automating this backup to OneDrive / Google Drive? I am under the assumption that as of right this moment, if it dies and I restore my TrueNAS I can't bring it back into Hex, but this will be something that will be possible in the future.
-
I tried that could not get it to work. Think I will uninstall Hexos and reinstall truenas watch YouTube videos on how to. Bought this application Thinking it would of be easy to work it. This makes the fourth time I will have to reinstall the application and start all over. But thanks for sharing
-
very cool setup. One recommendation, since you are using a perviously used and older ssd as your boot drive, look into auto backing up your truenas config file maybe in the cloud. In case the boot drive fails itll just make the process slightly less painful. That said its probably a good idea for everyone to do this
-
last i heard it was coming sometime in 2025 with the version 1.0 update.
-
I imagine you will have to go into the truenas interface and configure the jellyfin app to see the same directories as plex. That said i am far from an expert on the matter, heck i only bothered to install jellyfin myself last week.

Mobius replied to viper1200's question in OS & Features
question did you have a raid z1 pool or a mirror pool? I'm just trying to figure out why hitting delete works for some users and not for others -
I setup plex with all media on the server. I install jellyfin but I can't find a way to access the media already on the server. Unless I have double copy of everything. Did anyone figured out how to access your media using jellyfin? Thanks

I am wondering when we can host the deck.hexos.com dashboard locally as I do not want to always access it via the web.

The tin snips broke my heart, Bring it to me so I can hit it with the plasma or 4in grinder lol
