eryk Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Hey everyone! 👋 I’d like to propose creating a dedicated section on the forum for recommended hardware configurations tailored to HexOS. I think this could be super helpful for both new users and seasoned enthusiasts looking for the best setups to fully utilize HexOS. We could include curated hardware suggestions, such as: Desktop PCs and laptops optimized for HexOS. NAS devices where HexOS really shines. Other solutions (e.g., miniPCs, servers) that serve as a great foundation for HexOS’s features. This kind of knowledge base would make it much easier to find the perfect hardware for various use cases – from home setups to office environments, and even more demanding scenarios. We could also categorize recommendations by budget or user expertise levels. What do you think? I’d be happy to help kickstart this initiative by sharing my own experiences and suggestions. 😊 Let me know in the comments if you think this is a good idea and which devices you’d personally recommend! Greetings from Poland! 🇵🇱 2 Quote

flyingsquirrel Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) TrueNas Scale can be run on a N100 powered mini PC with 8GB and quick sync(hardware acceleration). The real question is what do you need it to do. File storage, a weak CPU with 1GB RAM. Want to stream 1080p or 4K then the CPU requirements change. Edited December 4, 2024 by flyingsquirrel Quote
eryk Posted December 4, 2024 Author Posted December 4, 2024 I’m currently struggling with deciding what hardware to choose for HexOS. Right now, I’m using a Synology DS918+, but honestly, the whole setup feels overly complicated. Even though I have the technical knowledge, I find it frustrating to deal with such a complex configuration, especially when there are multiple tools for the same tasks. It’s overwhelming and very time-consuming. I’d like to try HexOS to run Home Assistant on something more powerful. My goal is to have unlimited possibilities, especially when adding new integrations and features. I’ve been considering different options, from the Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q to the Mac Mini M4, but doing all the research alone is tough. There are so many aspects to consider, and it would be much better to leverage the synergy of knowledge from other users. As we say here: “Two heads are better than one!” Quote
amaivt Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) I use mostly my current NAS / Home Server as: Media Server (Jellyfin to tv / laptop and desktop) Development box (ssh in and do some coding) I don't have GPU now, and media plays just fine, but I plan is to add Nvidia GPU so I can do AI development in box, currently I use my main PC for this. System: 16Gb ram AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (6-core) 8Tb storage (+4Tb drive waiting when I get HexOS) 1Tb OS / Swap drive Currently my OS is NixOS but plan to switch to HexOS when I get it. I will most likely soon also upgrade my RAM from 16 to 32, or even 64Gb. At least 3 HDD drives are recommended, one for parity, so one can fail, and no data loss. For me 8Tb is far enough, at least for now. Edited December 5, 2024 by amaivt Quote
