Hey all,

as the name implies I would like to see a simple checkbox to make folders available via nfs.
As a bonus a list of IP ranges that are allowed to access the share would be perfect.
The user mapping to the user owning the folder so that I do not need to care about permissions and just access the data via NFS could be handled automatically as a default.

Please feel free to ask for clarification and to add your ideas below!

Would love to properly control NFS permissions via a gui! I’m video editing directly from my nas on a Mac. SMB is so slow compared to NFS, but the permissions are a nightmare.

I am loving HexOS so far! It "just works" when creating the network SMB shares and permissions. I would also like an option for NFS share to maximize the throughput speed of my 10Gbps network from HexOS to my linux machines.

Keep up the great work!

I really like this feature request! Using NFS in Truenas is way to complicated. I already had a lot of Truenas NFS permission denied errors in the past.

yes, needs to happen, SMB is slow and terrible. just tried setting up NFS in trueNAS with no luck, I've gone back to ssh for now. SMB is so slow it makes my 10GbE Nic worthless. 200gb in 5 hours over SMB. ssh 6mins

add NFS support!

I just ran a test. I copied 210GB of data over SMB using 2.5GbE Ethernet adapters. The average speed was 277MB/s, and the total time was 11 minutes and 51 seconds. That’s at full speed.

In general, SMB is better for large files, while NFS is better for small files. However, as you can see, performance can depend heavily on your configuration and the client you’re using. It seems like something isn’t right in your setup—perhaps a driver issue?

I've just had to search and rename a bunch of files that I wanted to move to my new HexOS machine because of the SMB protocol's file name limitations.  I'd really rather not have to do that when NFS is seamless on Linux.

I'd like to see a GUI created in HexOS to manage NFS shares.

I do think it's a bit more "advanced" compared to what your general NAS user might want, so maybe NFS shares needs to be hidden by default and have a toggle in the settings to show it. There should probably also be a disclaimer or something to tell ppl (in simple terms) the difference between the two.

I'd also like to see the option of making X folder accessible via both SMB and NFS (if possible) but I reckon that would complicate the permissions backend even more.

NFS is not likely any time soon and totally agree that slow SMB transfers can largely be mitigated with proper network management and file size awareness.
