ThunderKnife Posted December 24, 2025 Posted December 24, 2025 Hi, Currently i'm using my very old computer as homeserver. I have plex running on it including sonarr/radarr/prowlarr. Future use will also be home assistant. However ever since installing sabnzbd it keeps crashing. Probably because it's to resource intensive. This is my old build. Intel i5-3450 8BGB of ram 128GB sata SSD as Boot 5 16TB seagate Exos X18 I'm currently looking for a new build but don't exactly know what I should get. I have my eyes on a build I could buy for €1200(1400$) however don't know if it is worth it or maybe overkill. ASUS X99-Dual (Intel X99 chipset, dual-socket LGA2011-3) 2× Intel Xeon E5-2695 v4 (18 cores / 36 threads per CPU) Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming OC 8GB 8× 32GB SK Hynix DDR4 ECC RDIMM 2400MHz I'm going to use the same boot and HDD's. Should I get the build or could I get something more worth the money. I'm willing to spend around the price I already mentioned. Thanks for the help. Quote
ubergeek Posted January 4 Posted January 4 Does power consumption matter? Amd I guess you are in the eu Quote
ThunderKnife Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 Yes, i'm in the eu. I decided to ditch the secondhand hardware and go for new. I have a I5-14600K on the way with a MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Max WIFI and 32GB Crucial Pro CP2K16G56C46U5. If you have any better idea's please share. The hardware hasn't left the wharehouse yet. Quote
ubergeek Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago IMO I say go with what you can afford / what your build requires. the new hardware is not a bad way to go Quote
Mobius Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I might be a bit too late to be of much help I personally would skip dedicated gpu unless you have specific tasks that would benefit from it. I would also pick intel 12th gen over 13th or 14th because of their possible issues. what you plan to use the server for can also help narrow down what hardware is best for you. Just a storage server? plex server? ai workload? Quote
