Hi everyone!

I wanted to create this thread as a friendly space where we can all introduce ourselves and get to know each other better. Whether you’re new to the community or you’ve been here for a while, feel free to stop by and tell us a little about yourself—your hobbies, interests, or anything you’d like to share.

I’ll go first to kick things off:

Hi, I’m Stefano 🙂

I’m a tech enthusiast and a bit of a nerd. I absolutely love exploring new technologies and working with Linux, especially when it comes to configuring servers. Experimenting with different setups and solving technical challenges are some of the things I enjoy the most.

Outside of tech, music plays a huge role in my life. I’m a big fan of jazz and R&B for their smooth and soulful vibes, and I also love metal for its raw energy and power. My taste is pretty eclectic, and I enjoy discovering new artists and sounds.

I’m always curious and eager to learn, whether it’s about technology, music, or something completely new. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you and hearing your stories—so don’t be shy! Jump in and introduce yourself.

Now it’s your turn! Feel free to share as much or as little as you’d like. We’re all here to connect and learn from each other.

Welcome aboard!

I'm Jens,

i live in Belgium and I'm currently studying network and system administration.

Obviously my interests are pretty PC-oriented, but apart from that i do enjoy listening to various music.

I'm glad i found out about HEXos early on so i can start from scratch. i usually feel overwhelmed by all the available options in existing relatable software/OS's. 😄

Anyways, back to waiting for my license mail to arrive "hint-hint" 😄 catch y'all later!

To @Stefano are you the same person that did the unraid podcast?

Watched the LTT video decided to buy a license , I am Pro license holder of unraid since 2005. I like this simplicity of the permissions and the robustness of truenas

what is really eating my grapes is why JonP left and  I assume several other unraid peeps

Hi, my name is Ganesh,
I’m from Ontario, Canada. Back when XBMC was still called Kodi, I used to set up servers on an old Toshiba laptop that was handed down to me by my older sibling. Over the years, I’ve accumulated a lot of files on my computer and have always wanted to create a NAS backup device. However, I’ve been putting it off because it’s a lot of work, and I’ve been moving between campus and home for quite a few years now. I recently watched an LTT video, and the simplicity of this OS and the early access price finally motivated me to take the plunge Just before Dec 2 midnight 😄 I’m excited to see how developers will take this project forward! 🙂

Hello all. I live in Deland Florida, that's north of Orlando. I have been a Technoid for as long as I can remember. My first computer was a Kim-1 that i buillt. I went from there to a Ohio Scientific 6502 machine. I then switched to Radio Shack TRS-80. I ran a Pascal support BBS and wrote door games and utilities for Sysops for 18 years starting in 1984 using RBBS on a Model 1 Trash80.  BBS software I used was RBBS, Spitfire, Proboard, AptXbbs (OS2).

After moving to Orlando I switch to OS2 for a while, my clam to fame or my stupidity (don't now which to embrace) was that i had 42 phone line BBS in Orlando. I had always been into Linux for years before and it only got worse as BBS system gave way to the internet. I started out as a pipe fitter and controls system specialists.

I now work for Trane Technologies and I design and program and commission both software and graphics for HVAC Automation Control system I do work for NASA, Hospitals and Schools.

I also am big into music and music production. I toured as a second job when i was young as a roadie for ShowCo this let me work with some really cool bands in the mid 70 thru the late 80's. I ran sound for the USO at base's in IRAQ during the war in 2005 to mid 2007. Got to run sound for Toby Keith and Taylor Swift several times while I was there.

I have a small studio in my house that i do mix and mastering for local bands most of my work right now is bands in Europe. Anyone have music they need to master just give me a yell. This is one of the main reason for my NAS systems, backup for my music files and also my media library.

FYI

The graphic logo is from my studio name I picked Phat Dragon Studios HA!!

I am ulfn, my first name Ulf is an old Nordic word for wolf. History lesson over.                                                                                                                                                    Built computers since 2008 for my self and for my sister- and her son too.

So I built a would-be-NAS computer in 2015 - Fractal Design Node 304 with an Asrock mini-ITX serverboard, 128GB SSD, Xeon processor and 16GB ECC RAM and four WD Red 2TB hard drives. Just because you could.                                                                                                                                                                                                   It all got stuck in limbo, though. Which OS to use, and how to configure it? You need time to do these things, and I just didn´t have that.

Today I want a more ready to use and simple to configure solution. So it happened I got information about HexOS somewhere - not the LTT video everybody else saw. When the 99USD lifetime offer came I reacted immediately.

In a forum post here I found information about a mini PC with four NVMe slots and purchased that. Mini is it for me.

More of that I try to describe elsewhere in this forum.

Over and out.

Hey all. Always been a tech enthusiast, and love learning about new hardware/integrations. Especially when it comes to solving "that one problem that's annoying".

Really getting into more Privacy focused tech as well, so it's nice to have something like HexOS to learn/play with as I try to take more and more of my services offline in a homelab.

Hello Nerds!  About me...okay, here goes.

I acquired the nickname Bull when my boss saw me at work after having cut my hair and shaved my head,  He thought I looked like Bull Shannon (Richard Moll) of Night Court.  I'm a nerd, through and through and currently live in Maine.  I became interested in science and technology in middle school (grades seven and eight), starting with astronomy, photography and later, astrophotography (anything space).  At the time the family was living in a ~150 year-old farm and I had set up a little b/w darkroom in the basement.

By junior-high, personal computing was just starting out (this was in the early 70's) and I fell in love.  I always wanted an S100-bus computer like the IMSAI 8080 or SOL-20, but could never afford one and ended up buying a Radio Shack Model 1 which sported a whopping 4kB of RAM, a monochrome monitor and a cassette tape recorder for permanent storage.  I remember learning Basic and a little Assembly and writing my first real program - a simple planetary statistics database.  In the late 70's my sister and I were lucky enough to have access to the Bates College Computing Center as mom was employed with the college.  From the main terminal room located in the old Corum Library I was able to access the Dartmouth College Time Share and was introduced to what would soon become the internet.  I remember spending hours on a program called Xcaliber, chatting with students at Dartmouth, as well as kids of family members there.  I even wrote my own chat program that allowed more than the 20-person limit at the time.  It was there that I was introduced to C, PL/1 and CPL (Command Processing Language - kind of like Primes version of PowerShell).  After school I worked at various places and ended up working for Bates College in the computing department as an electronics technician during the day (doing board-level work as well as assembling PCs for the campus and network wiring) and as a systems operator for a few hours a night doing full and incremental backups of the twin PR1ME 9750 mainframes to high-speed tape.  The mid-80's is when I built my first x286 and also selling them to friends through word-of-mouth.  It was at this point when I also wrote some software, just for curiosities sake (a database management system, a word processor, a file encryption utility (using an algorthm provided by the very smart son of the Bates College Computing director, as well as a video store POS system for my mom and sister's business).  I haven't done much since then, aside from my own personal journey in tech and my love for film and music.

And this leads to my confession... I am a data packrat, which is why I became interested in NAS's in the first place.  I started storing my photography, movies and music on a 5-bay DAS box in JBOD-mode, but always knew that was a disaster waiting to happen.  I currently have over 5,000 films, 200 television shows/streaming series, 500 documentaries, 51,000 songs from 5000 albums covering 377 artists, not to mention my photography library, NFL Superbowl collection, 800 music videos and hundreds of concerts and rockumentaries.  I know, I need an intervention.  Of course I haven't viewed all of this content.  I guess I'm just an archivist at heart.  Besides, I'll need something to watch once I retire.

@jamaican.mekrazy that's a great collection of media but i didn't think you should stop just here. I think i have around 2000 shows and a few hundred movies and i only think about doubling it lol

@Mobius To be honest, I don't plan on slowing down any time soon.  The only factor will be cost.  The 12x8TB SSDs I currently have cost me a bit over $300 USD each just one year ago and now cost over $550.  Would I be able to expand my pool by slipping in some additional, less expensive, brand/model of the same capacity I wonder?
