How good does HexOS/TrueNAS Scale handle hardware changes?

Right now I have system running:

  • Intel 4770K
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
  • LSI M5015 HBA (up to 8 disks) with a PCI-E Extender card (so it was ready for up to 16 disk total) running in RAID 6
  • 8x Seagate IronWolf 2 TB
  • Windows 2022

I’m planning to switch to HexOS once it’s closer to final (I grabbed a license back when they were cheap). Before that, I’ll need to back up my current media, which I already have plans for.

How well does HexOS/TrueNAS Scale handle major hardware upgrades (CPU, motherboard, RAM) after switching?

And what’s the cheapest HBA that can support up to 16 drives in IT-mode?

@ubergeek has swapped out his hardware many times iirc.
as long as boot drives stay the same, its fairly straight forward swapping parts.

realistically its probably the lsi 9300-16i but that one chugs on electricity and outputs a lot of heat so you would need a dedicated fan for it and in the long run itll be more expensive.

i personally bought an oem variant of the 9400-16i for not that much more than 9300s are going for on ebay.
i forget the model numbers, probably best you just ask chat gpt what the oem model numbers are

Thank you both for the answers.

I'll look into it and start saving up for both the drive fra a complete backup of my media data and the HBA card for future HexOS use.
