Iliyria Posted May 8, 2025 Posted May 8, 2025 I just purchased this on eBay @ a very cheap price for 2 PowerEdge T630 servers (with HDDs (16x900GB and 4x 2TB)) for only $147.50 for everything. Only reason I got it so cheap was because Im local and the seller would only ship to people via freight. Now I have my backup replication server(s) for my homelab 1
Dylan Posted May 10, 2025 Posted May 10, 2025 That's a great deal! What are your deployment/configuration plans?

Right now the front runner plan is to use 1 of the T630s to replace my VM server (Precision T7810). Upgrade that T630 with 2x 20 core CPUs and make that my VM server. Then possibly "donate" the other T630 to a friend that has been wanting to upgrade/replace his older Synology NAS with the stipulation that I can use it as well as my offsite backup server vs paying Dropbox about $30.00 a month. Finally take the Precision T7810 (current VM server) and use that as my TrueNAS replication server. I knew I should have bought multiple HexOS licenses when they were $99 lol Edited May 10, 2025 by Iliyria 2
Mobius Posted May 10, 2025 Posted May 10, 2025 Sounds like a generous and solid plan. 41 minutes ago, Iliyria said: I knew I should have bought multiple HexOS licenses when they were $99 lol I had the same thoughts back then too. Thankfully i caved and bought 2 licenses. 1

May I suggest to monitor the power consumption for a bit after getting everything up and running? If power is cheap around your parts you probably don't need to worry, but if it is not, things could quickly add up, as tends to be the case with anything running 24/7 and doubly so with more venerable hardware. It's probably fine, but just so you don't get blindsided by a big bill. That being said, tinkering with server hardware can be lots of fun. Desktop hardware is cool and all, but the specialized enterprise features they put on servers can be interesting to play around with. If you're not familiar, be sure to check out the iDRAC!
ubergeek Posted May 29, 2025 Posted May 29, 2025 the 630 is a good server chassis. they can be a power hog just make sure you do some proper maintenance and give it some new thermal paste

I just stopped mining the past month... the power draw cant be worse than my 3090 (pulling about 365w 24x7)
