Limits of 1 license? Buy multiple?

Question

Posted

Just bought a license thanks to the Linus Tech Tips video (and ive been wanting to setup a NAS anyway). I came to the forum and saw that some people are buying multiple licenses. Why would someone want more than 1 license? What are the limits to 1 license? Since the blackfriday deal is so good, i wanna make sure im not gonna miss out and be able to buy 2 licenses for the price of less than 1.

The reason is because each license must be tied to one server only, so if you want to make 2 HexOS servers, (1 primary, 1 offsite backup for example), then you need 2 licenses minimum.

I just purchased 2 lifetime licenses, but don't expect to use both soon.   One I am working on getting hardware for, the other is for when "buddy backup" is available.   I will have the first  one in a Mobile Office / Workshop / RV, and the second I will setup at a family members home as a Secondary backup in a different State.

I figured getting 2 now helps them with funding,

Hi there! I just want to add that we will be providing additional ways to pay for HexOS that will be cheaper than a $299 lifetime. Yes, this will be a subscription.

I have 2 Servers in need of a renewal. Yeah it is Beta but with BuddyLink comming it sounds nice for a Backupserver. And 90$ now or 300 in 1 Year. Plus: it supports the team and gives a cashflow and with that the development can progress a bit faster (more employes, everybody needs to be paid)

I was hopping to be able to make "buddy backup" work between a HexOS server and a TrueNAS one (somehow) because two licenses now are a bit too heavy for my wallet and because I'm not 100% committed to having two servers. But now I'm afraid I may regret having only one license...

TrueNas does not have buddy backup, this is a HexOS addition.

I am in a similar situation of possibly regretting not buying two right now, but since I don't even have 1 server set up yet, I don't think it will be a huge deal.  If I manage to get 1–2 servers set up in the next year, then there is always the chance of buying another license for $199 within that year long period before the price jumps up to $300.  Even $99 is a bit much for me to spend at the moment since I just spent $235 on DaVinci Resolve Studio having their first Black Friday sale ever.

I do wish you could use 1 license for 2 PC's though for that $99 price as an incentive for early adopters (since we are not getting cloud based services or whatever else they decide to exclude), but I get that they have to make money somehow.

Sure, but the concept of having one machine replicating to a second one was already possible so it should be possible also on HexOS, only maybe not with the ase of the buddy backup system they are offering.
I'm betting someone will make it work and teach us how to do it.
Anyway, as @casedistorted says, we can always bite the bullet on a 200 dollar license in the future and, if HexOS is 90% of what I expect it to be I'll be glad to give them money again.
