masm Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Hello everyone, I am setting up my first NAS and want to buy HDD, but I'm unsure how many drives I should get and what type of radis. Manly the NAS will be for PLEX and phone backups (me and my family), and probably home assist in the future. should I do a different pool one for backup and the other for Plex? Thanks a lot Quote
ubergeek Posted February 2 Posted February 2 What do you think your pool size should be ? If it is non important storage it can be done with a pair of drives but if you only have a pair of 8tb disks you will only have 8tb of space in a simple zfs. If you want to build one that will last you with future proofing storage and redundancy I would look at a minimum of a 5 drive setup that will give you 2 paired drives and a failover . I built my NAS with future proofing in mind at least for a while and found some killer deals on ebay for 4tb drives and currently have 15 in my build split into 2 pools , one for all my data that is long term storage and the other is for plex and all the other things that get used on a daily . 1 Quote

If yoh have 3 or more disks hexos will create a raidz1, so you set this as raidz type and you get your usable storage in TB. Mobius Posted February 2 Posted February 2 (edited) Make sure you purchase CMR drives and not SMR drives. Personally I recommend fewer larger drives than more smaller drives. These drives have non-insignificant idle power costs so you will be saving a decent amount of money every year going with the larger drives. Also you do have a limit of how many hard drive bays you have so using larger hard drives makes the most of each bay if you ever wanted to expand. I would go with three of the largest hard drives that financially and practically make sense for you. This is because you need a minimum of three drives in a pool already if you ever want to expand a pool in HexOS Edited February 3 by Mobius 4 Quote
