Can I import my existing data without wiping/losing the data?

Question

Posted

I have an existing server that runs Ubuntu, holding roughly 10TB of data across 6 disks using SnapRaid & MergerFS

Can I replace Ubuntu with hexos and import my existing disks into it without any data loss? Or would I need to back it up and then restore it into hexos?

Hi @EzekielJ - You would need to backup your data then copy to the new installation. When you perform a fresh install you HexOS will format your disks using the ZFS filesystem. This means that while the DATA on your disk can be moved/copied as needed, you cannot simply change OS/boot disks and go from there.

I'd recommend spending some time reading through the forums and starting with out hardware FAQ as well as reading up on the ZFS filesystem.

Welcome aboard and good luck!

Just like to add to this for clarification.

While this may not help yourself, As your file system is different, it may be useful to someone else, and is what I did when I accidentally removed the server from the dashboard.
If your previous server used ZFS, All you need to do is remove the discs, Run the setup with no extra storage discs, then, Once complete, Reinsert the data discs.

Then go to the truenas admin panel, storage, and click the import pool button at the top right. To then make the web UI aware of the pool, all you have to do is rename the pool to "HDDs"

Though, you should always back up beforehand as a matter of good practise. (What can go wrong, will go wrong). This will just save you copying the data back and forth.
