HexOS compatibilty with qnap, synology, and terramaster hardware?

So I'm building my first proper nas soon and my original plan was to get a qnap ts-464 with irowolf drives and stick to the default os just because it look like the best stock os out of the options that would take the less amount of time to get up and running.

Now that I have hexos lifetime the stock os and the time it takes to setup matter a lot less. which means in theory I could get the hardware from qnap, synology, or  terramaster based on just who was the spec at a given price point alone.

so my question is how is hoxos compatibility with qnap, synology, and terramaster of the shelf hardware?

Any particular 4-6 bay hardware from any of them that I should avoid because it does not play well with hexos?

Any particular 4-6 bay hardware from any of them that I should prefer because it just works with hexos?

As a side question, are there any other brands I should be looking at for a 4-6 bay NAS that has a better price-to-performance ratio compared to a similar system from qnap, synology, or  terramaster

Welcome @bojun!! Take a look at our compatibility guide located HERE.

I just picked up THIS PUPPY specifically for HexOS and an upgrade to my 10yo Netgear NAS. I've not done much with it yet, but it's a solid build, quiet and priced competitively.

Good luck!.

Don't buy Synology, you can only use their own DSM OS but not Hexos.

Make sure it has an x86 CPU (Intel or AMD) and not an ARM CPU (Hexos doesn't run on ARM) and that it has a video output.

Good to know about Synology. I didn't particularly like them from the start but put it on the list for completeness now I have a reason to take them out  of the list 🙂

I really like it. So far, it's as advertised. I keep it in my room and while the fans are not silent not sure they can get any quieter. It's responsive and the build is solid.

I agree with that! I bought the AMD version of the WTR Pro, and I’m very happy with it! A great choice.

Did you put a m.2 wifi card on it are you using it by Ethernet. I'm tempted to put a m.2 wifi card but not sure if it would work with hexos

@bojun Using Ethernet as HexOS does not support wifi (and neither does TrueNAS if I am not mistaken). I'll likely throw in a second SSD for OS redudancy; either that or use it as a ZIL drive.

That is very interesting, what's your intended use case if I may ask? I've spent some time thinking about L2ARC and SLOG/ZIL but I have never found any viable usecase for me, but I'm also new to those concepts.

Mostly for VM's. I tend to spin up a lot of VM's when a new distro comes out to kick the tires, as it were.
