unicorn_weavel567 Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 Curious if anyone has had success running on something like an old synology NAS or something similar that has three storage bays. Wondering if i can get a used one for cheap and add some drives to it to test things out and maybe split off the storage component of my system into a smaller, lower power device than the PC that I have currently running everything Quote
unicorn_weavel567 Posted December 27, 2024 Author Posted December 27, 2024 a NUC or something may also work i guess Quote
PsychoWards Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 I'm not sure that you can easily install anything on a Synology NAS, they are pretty locked down and would require a lot of tinkering to even install Hexos. So I would not go down that route. Also make sure that you get something with a video output, or else installation and management in case you locked yourself out will be a nightmare. Also it is not possible to use the boot drive in a Pool, meaning if you have a 3 storage bays, 1 drive will be used as a boot driving, leaving you with only 2 drives left. Take this into consideration, that you also need space for a dedicated boot drive. 1 Quote
unicorn_weavel567 Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 For the record: I ended up buying a used Datto NAS (which are apparently made with consumer x86 hardware, so parts are pretty standardized). The result: I got hexOS installed! Quote
