Reedith Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 I've been up for building a new server chassis build for this OS but I don't know what to use I want a really powerful hexos server What CPU motherboard combination should I go for I have a threadripper on the shelf but I feel like that eats too much power for a server Would love to build with epic but I don't know if you can get those cheap enough on the second hand market yet !! Nor do I understand those motherboards Anyone on here recommend some really high-end really powerful hardware for multi 4K Plex streams and hitting the nass with 10 gig transfers of lots of 4K and 6K uncompressed video files straight out of cinema cameras Quote
RobotsNeverDie Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 The more powerful hardware you use the more your electric bill will be. I would go with an Intel cpu to use Quick sync for your plex streams. It allows you to get away with using a less power hungry cpu. I would suggest any intel cpu that has a UHD 700 igpu. It will handle multiple 4k streams. The intel i5 12500 is a 65w cpu and can be bought new for $175 on Amazon US. The 12600k is on sale for $150 on Amazon US but is a 125w cpu. You can find better deals if you search /r/hardwareswap on reddit or search on ebay. Then grab the cheapest Z790 or B760 chipset motherboard that fits your needs/budget. With this CPU you can choose to get a motherboard that uses either DDR4 or DDR5. Quote
Clixxi Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 N100 is not really powerful or has 10G but it can transcode up to four 4k streams in parallel. What often gets overlooked is a fitting case for your use cases. HexOS is primarily build as an easy to use NAS OS so it makes sense to plan for lots of space for drives. In a few months i will probably build a server around the Jonsbo N5. Quote

Nice. How reliable is the DAS USB connection in terms of drops or data corruption ? Quote

Haven't had any issues, really. I've been using it since August 2021. The biggest issue is sometimes the drives don't spin up, but that just means I have to push a power button on the front to get it rolling. It's been running attached a Windows box, and I've been using StableBit Drivepool and Scanner to pool the drives and monitor them. Quote

cake Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 So one thing that TrueNAS is pretty adamant about, that I haven't seen the HexOS maintainers talk about, is ZFS's heavy recommendation for Error Checking (ECC) memory. ECC Memory historically was only on and supported by server CPU's and motherboards. Ryzen CPUs support ECC memory as well, but the motherboard needs to support it as well. Also the general rule for TrueNas, which would hold here as well, is at least 1 GB of RAM per TB of storage. Quote
cake Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Actually - here is the documentation on this from TrueNas - https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/13.0/gettingstarted/corehardwareguide/#error-correcting-code-memory Quote
jpadgett Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 I was wondering about that as well. On the YouTube feed nothing was talked about ram but I think the desktop PC they used only had 16gb. I am tired of messing with workstations and desktop PC. I have bought a rack and am using dell Poweredge servers just because they are so cheap. NOTE: I do not plug both power supply's in i only leave one plugged in the other is a spare. Quote
