Midnight2ss Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 After everything gets built out more, as we are still in pre-release, how will upgrading or replacing your server be handled? I understand if this is still unknown, but I'm curious if you'll need to purchase a new license after a year or two if you want to upgrade/replace your server. Or if the option will be available to transfer it. Quote
jonp Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Licenses are NOT tied to your physical hardware. Just migrate your storage devices to new electronics and get going. Great question though and will probably add it to the FAQ. 3 1 Quote
Ray Pires Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Will it be a subscription model or higher price tag for lifetime license? Quote

According to their Official Reddit account here, no for subscription model if you have a license. Sounds like they'll give options for both in the future, with an increased cost for the Lifetime (in the case of wanting a second license) Edited November 29, 2024 by Sparkrdom Quote
jonp Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Correct. Lifetime licenses mean lifetime. There are certain features that come at an increased cost to deliver on a recurring basis such as premium support services, cloud backup, or other similar services. Those would be sold a la carte. In the future, we will offer a subscription for HexOS itself which will be at a lower price point. Lifetime licenses will always be available. 1 Quote
gilligan Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 How does the lifetime license work then? Is it tied to the account? Is it tied to the installation meaning it could be moved but if that drive dies what happens? Is it tied to the hardware/installation but can easily be changed somehow? I imagine a setup like Acronis's license management would work good. I am hesitant to spend a couple hundred bucks until this is clarified. Thank you! Quote
jonp Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 Licenses are tied to your account and are consumed by claiming servers for management. You can free a server from management by disconnecting it through the UI at which point the license can now be claimed by another server you want to use. Quote

Thank you for the update and I apologize for the double post. This all sounds good. Quote

Apologies if this was answered in another thread, still browsing what's been posted already. Out of curiosity, what happens when you free a server from management? Does it just keep running as a regular TrueNAS system? I could see the license being a great tool to initially setup a server, then just release them for use on another project. Also, could that same server be re-claimed? And would that require setting it up again from scratch or would it just automatically recognise the configuration again? Quote
