Title says it all Why would I use Hex OS when I can use unraid lifetime licenses for $249 Dollars compared to HexOS's $299 once the Beta phase is over???

The idea is HexOS for average people, non tech savvy and can't be bother or too complicated for them to learn setup NAS server. With this easy of use software, everyone can setup their own NAS server and be done for it.

And yes, this is not for everyone, especially for tech savvy out there who can be able to build their own NAS with no difficulty at all.

I may be an edge case but I've been in IT for 24 years. Just because I CAN get stuff done at the command line does not mean I want to, if it can be made easier, especially when I'm at home and just trying to get movies up for my kids to watch. Dig? I get paid to do this stuff and no one is paying me to do it at home. Further, the thought of paying an Apple or whomever, just doesn't sit right with me. So, DIY  home NAS that's simple to set up and manage for $99? Yes, please and I'll take two while were at it.

YES! This right here.

I do tetchy brain workie hard stuff all day for work.

I *could* learn TrueNAS, but I want something that is reliable and performant without my having to think about it, or worry about having to spend hours researching trying to fixing things if something does break.

I am choosing to go the easy route. K.I.S.S

LOL...can we un/officially code name HexOS "KISS"? I'd settle for just the beta, but there's something there in the branding. Just sayin'...

Dude, those are hilarious. Especially "HexOS: Less is more" and you're a Linux admin and get the joke. Thanks for sharing these!

I'm glad you enjoyed them! I had fun coming up with all of them, haha.
I must admit though that I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding my being a linux admin, as I'm not a sysadmin of any kind... Have I stumbled onto an inside joke by accident? 🤔

That one popped into my head and wouldn't leave. Cracked me up the whole time I was writing it LOL

Got a few more...

HexOS is the place with the helpful software folks.

HexOS: We didn't start the fire.

HexOS: All your database are belong to us

"You probly thought NAS servers were high maintenance. Nope. They're not. They're easy. They've been streamlined by JonP and his team. Eshtek Inc. We specialize in the easiest NAS servers anywhere. Period."

HexOS: It can run Crysis. (after thinking of this one it's now a mission of mine to run crysis in a VM on Hexos lol)

HexOS: We don't shout at our JBODs

HexOS: Yes, dad, I am winning.

HexOS: Making networked storage as easy as pie.

HexOS: Very Storage. Such apps. Much simple. Wow.

HexOS: We downloaded more RAM

Yeah, when viewing files on a Linux CLI there is an old pager program called "more" but it was a pain in the rear so some dude coded up an updated pager program and called it "less" and described it as "less is more" so folks would know what it did. It's just an old bit of Linux trivia that puts a smile on faces of those who know. And now YOU know, lol! Cheers!

This. Beyond that there are others in my home that may have need to interact with NAS admin that have no need or interest in becoming experts in Linux/Truenas/Unraid. This is why I've run a Synology for so long despite having the technical chops to do it myself on any hardware I want. The pitch that sold me was commercial/consumer NAS friendly, with all the power of underlying Truenas when I want it.

So that i can supply my family with some sort of self hosted servers which are not hosted by me. Also can function as another backup location 😏

I seem to have made a mistake when trying to incorporate quotes into my answer so I'm trying again without quoting. Unraid is not TrueNas if you stick to basic functions unraid is really simple, it is however quite expensive, except for the fact that Hex OS will be even more expensive at its regular price. If it cost only $99 regularly it would be a steal!! As it is I don't see why HexOS was created in the first place.  Maybe you could give me a few examples where HexOS is easier to use than unraid?? Does it already have functions unraid does not??

Hi @rrhtjh HexOS is still in beta, thus the reduced pricing as the OS has reduced capabilities. Asking for examples where HexOS is easier to use over Unraid is not a fair comparison. Unraid has been under active development for over 24 years. We've been around for less than 24 days. The enticement for most of us is (projected) ease of use over other NAS OS's as well as being a part of something early on and contributing towards its growth. So, there's your value proposition. But we're still in beta and likely will continue to be so for a bit while longer. And that's okay because that's where the contribution comes in. Installing, building, testing, reporting and repeating. If the expectation is to run an install and have comparable performance to Unraid then you may not have understood the assignment.
