ThijssjihT Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Problem with hardware RAID is, when your motherboard dies, the RAID array is tied to the RAID controller so it can’t be restored, and your data is lost. Use software RAID. HexOS is made for simplicity. Just do as little as possible, let the OS choose for you. It will be the best for most users in its target audience. 1 Quote
jpadgett Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) I have both a Dell r530 and a Dell r710 both have built in Dell Raid Controllers. I had to order flashed replacement controllers off eBay for both TureNas and Unraid would not see the drives until i did this is referred as IT mode. Whether you choose HW or SW RAID you should back up your data. Choosing the right RAID type is also important. For instance, when creating my ZFS RAID, I will be using a 4x8TB disk raidz2 configuration. What this means is my array (storage pool) will only have ~14.5TB of available storage but can survive 2 disk failures. I do this because I am risk averse. Conversely, you could take the same disks and configure them in a raidz1 and get a little than 22TB of usable capacity but only survive 1 disk failure. The good news is ZFS, the underlying filesystem, is incredibly resilient so as long as our backing up your data, you can focus on which type of raid array you should use based on how many disks you have to use and your own personal risk tolerance. Blittz Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 TY for all the feedback. The last time I setup a RAID was a very long time ago. The whole reason I got HexOS was to make things simple, so yes, it makes sense to just let HexOS do it's thing 🙂 Quote
