Just frustrated everything I want to hangs on HexOS getting to a point I can use it as a "prod" environment as well as more apps. I have a small movie/Anime collection I want to port over to the hexOS drives. I could probably do it now since it sounds like we can hook up existing pools? But the app I want to use JellyFin is far too complicated for me to figure out via TrueNAS I don't have the patience to figure out what to do Mainly I don't want to have to configure every little thing. The same goes for ROMM and Steam Headless. I want it to house backups of my ROMMs and my Steam Games so that when I want to downlaod them I can without using bandwidth. I'm using an old Gaming computer as my server (i7 2600k w/ a XFX 290x and 20GB ram ๐ lol) so I can play some games still. Oh the reason I want to slow down on my bandwidth usage because we have multiple people who work from home, and some months I almost reach my data cap. ๐ฅฒ But remember the ISPs said "Customers like data caps F* OFF) But the other reason is I also want to move entirely away from windows if I can since I've had enough of them. But to do that I would like all 3 of my computers to sync and I want them to sync locally to HexOS. ๐ So before I move my GPD Win4 to Bazzite I need ๐คจ to be able to sync all my data over from the Win4 (which has all my ROMs), And then transition that to Bazzite, and then once that is done I'll be moving my desktop to Bazzite too but the longer I wait on the desktop the better, cause I was dumb and have a 3070 in it. So yeah I just can't wait until HexOS finally says "we're making it official" and "look we have more than 2 apps have fun!"

PSA: You can update to 24.10.2.2 via TrueNAS; HexOS Q2 Update Imminent
FangerZero replied to jonp's topic in Announcements
Honestly I love these tidbits of info sprinkled all over the place. Having an idea as to why things are being done is great particularly in beta. -
You mean toggles left, text align right?

ROMM has HexOS listed on their site, I found that interesting
FangerZero replied to FangerZero's topic in Applications
Yes, trueNas makes sense though since it's been around for a while. But HexOS has not. all I'm saying I find it interesting that they'd take the time considering HexOS isn't even out of "beta" -
I was visiting ROMM's site wanting to learn more about it since it's my planned ROM Manager when HexOS finally gets out of beta. Just making plans of the things I want. And saw this. I don't know if ROMM put it up there cause HexOS is built on top of trueNAS or if they've been in talks with HexOS about the OneClick App install. I just found it interesting since yes probably adding it to the little marquee is easy, it's the fact that they did it.

Thanks for the update! And I can't wait for the JellyFin update! Though Still waiting on the Clear to treat this as "production"

File Syncing Password management Cookbook (mealie) Rom Storage Steam Game Storage maybe eventually for remote play Media Server The one thing I am going to have to do more research on is how to get it to store my documents from windows so that I can then have it sync to my other non-windows machines. So it's my "cloud storage" but then use my Cloud Storage OneDrive and sync with that once every 3-6 hours as an off site backup. And hopefully it'll do a better job than oneDrive. One Drive has gotten better over the years, but Now that I'm on Linux and Windows I'd like something to harmonize my environments.

Appreciate the response. I do hope though at some point we get the "green light" of go ahead and use the server like it's production and not test sooner rather than later.

You make a very good point. If I were them I DEFINITELY wouldn't be releasing until AFTER more apps are available. That tbh is what I've been waiting for the most. All these other little features I don't care so much about. Even buddy backup. I can't really suggest HexOS until it has more value to offer in terms of installable apps. I for one didn't need a NAS I just wanted it for the apps that I have no idea how to get running on TrueNAS like JellyFin and ROMM. There were a few bonus apps that were easy enough to setup in TrueNAS though some of it isn't fully there since I don't understand and the guides are not noob friendly.

Here are some of my gripes/concerns so far with the state of HexOS. Paid beta has been around since Let's say December, we're working on the 6th month? It just seems a bit long. I get don't rush it be ready to release 1.0 as solid as they can. But for those of us who have been using hexOS I think it's pretty lack Luster which is ABSOLUTELY ideal. It means it is doing the job it was meant to do. And with Synology being shady I imagine HexOS might see an influx of members from that group. So stability is the upmost importance. As we wait for 1.0 we have had plenty of time to want to do more with our HexOS, but since we're still in beta I see it as we could lose our data when we update to 1.0 and I don't want that to happen. I decided to try out a password manager and mealie, I've put quite a few recipes in, and I don't want to lose my password manager even if it some parts of it are not setup because documentation on it is bad. It still works well for the most part. That brings me to a question, When HexOS does get official support with these apps, how will it behave? Will it just take what you have and say "looks good" if there are settings and such that were missed or could be optimized will it help fix them? Or how will it handle any failed app setups? I don't even know how this works on trueNas even now. I'm still all in w/ hexOS since TrueNas to me was a nightmare and I like the few things I have running on HexOS and I can't wait for 1.0, when I will feel safe about my data not being wiped.

lol they updated one of my suggestions on app and I appreciate it greatly. Sticky App card window thing.
-
Next update better be good.

This coming from probably the target Audience of HexOS, someone who doesn't have the time or motivation to learn TrueNAS but understands what it is, but still wants to use it. I love Deck and it'll I imagine be the UI when it runs locally.
-
LOVE IT! I really appreciate the sticky app card when I select one. thank you!

Already implemented Applications and Wizards
FangerZero replied to FangerZero's question in OS & Features
Yup... Yeah I've never been good at getting words across. -
I wanted a password manager so I'm trying out vaultwarden, I seem to have it setup but trying to figure out the security thing so I don't always see it pop up is beyond me. Which got me thinking if HexOS were to add this to their list of "approved" apps would there be a method to essentially rerun the "wizard" to change the settings but have it auto fill the wizard with what you already have?

I think that's a great idea starting with plex since it's so popular and complex, even if I have no intention of using it. lol but I then am curious what was the reasoning behind immich? Was that super easy? I'm thinking If Immich is super easy it must've been the first one, and then yous went after plex for reasons stated. Got to walk before you can run.

I think making furniture functional like this is awesome! It's why my desk is the PC. As for answering the original question, I can't say I'd have done much different, but this Beta 1.0 has been a bit underwhelming. I get it, they need to get the kinks out since it seems A LOT of people had issues installing, while I fortunately had none. My experience has be optimal. I did jump the gun on a couple of apps, which installed perfectly fine without problems through TrueNAS. However, I look forward to JellyFin app being implemented, I just don't have the motivation to figure it out. So I'll just wait and not watch my content.
-
I've used JellyFin server running on windows, but have used Roku, LG TV, Android, and Windows to watch it. For the most part it runs fine but you may have to do some tweaking in the settings here and there on both the server and the client. Thanks though for the help, I've tried but just couldn't be asked to figure out how setup the folder structures.

Would be nice to see in the future when more applications are implemented in hexOS to see specific sections for apps. Like Plex is going to be a really big section on it's own so getting a sub-section under Applications would be nice. (I am not a plex user fyi) But the big ones get their own while more niche get their own category like password management apps I don't think there are that many idk, but those could be grouped w/ security in general or something like that. Just some thoughts for future forum organization.

Really good documenation will be key to success.
FangerZero replied to Soid's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I think how to use from a mac/windows perspective is great. Like accessing the actual NAS portion a normal person may not know how to do that. I do since I've done a lot of networking with windows sharing in the past. -
Easy migration from old HDDs to new HDDs / SSDs
FangerZero replied to wvienna's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I think it'd be great if when HexOS notices you're reaching x% capacity or y GB/TB left (set by user) it notifies you that you should consider upgrading your storage. Then it should send you to a guide on how to do it. This is one thing I am wondering, However I have 52TB so it'll be quite some time before I fill that up. At least I hope so. Also Send me guides if a drive is failing and how to replace it. I'm a noob so these are all things I've no clue how to do.
