    My First NAS.

Thanks for answering all my questions once again 😄 But busy with real life atm. But yeah, my biggest concern right now, and pretty big, should I do it or not, is the noise problems. I did see some sound dampening with spring-powered dampers to make it so that the vibrations do not go into a cabinet or something, and use that as a speaker. I live in an apartment, so I don't have any internet in my storage box downstairs, sadly. So yeah any room I will probaly hear it so not sure what I could do now. My decissions so far: Case: Upgrading to Jonsbo N5 for ATX support and ATX PSU CPU: i5 12600k or any in 12xxx HDD's: 8-10TB seagate ironwolfs. Pro is just to expensive for me. SSD: AH samsung NVME not sure which one yet of 512 gb or higher as you suggested for promox Motherboard: Still looking for one PSU: since I am ATX now i will be using my gaming pc one 750 Watt crosair RME750 and buy ah 1000 watt for my pc. Memory: 2x 16 GB stick not sure if i should go for 5400 RPM or 7200RPM with 256mb cache.

    My First NAS.

Ah did not know HexOs did not support VM's i tho it did. So that is a good catch. This way, I can also just run multiple systems on 1 machine, I suppose. Just an extra learning curve of Proxmox, but at first glance doesn't seem too hard. So I was planning on getting a small SSD of like 64 GB for HexOs. But can I also put Promox on that, or do I need an extra SSD for that, or HDD? Could you maybe just link me one so I have an example of what to look out for? I see so many different ones and just not sure which one to get. 😅 Also, sadly, alternate only has 16tb+ atm avaible bit to pricey for me. Yeah, learning more and more about it. I am really debating if I should not go with an ATX board for future expansion, and configuration would be easier. But then the case is just so big, so not sure if you have any recommendations in cases? The Jonsbo N3 I really liked since it was compact and hot-swappable. But still good airflow. Also learning more about the ECC option, yeah. If I really want that, the price just skyrockets, so I dropped that requirement for now. Yeah, I realised I only need 3 ports for now since I only have 3 HDD that I wanna use for now. So that is a later upgrade. Hmm, that is a big issue for me now than. I guess that means I will be running a long CAT5/6 cable through my house until I manage to drill some holes, etc. I could have it in the living room, but not sure how much noise it would produce. I assume I only need the NAS directly plugged into the modem. Can the other devices go over wifi? Thanks for the reply :D. This gave me some good info on my journey building one. I did realize it is costing a lot more. Then I thought first. Also, seeing your suggestion for alternate, are you also from the Netherlands?

    My First NAS.

Hey all, I am planning to build my first custom NAS. I know how to build a gaming pc, but not the details of cores, speeds, threads, or video encoding, or anything deep in why to pick x hardware against y hardware. Location: EU/Netherlands Purpose: - Hosting gaming servers, like any game, this will change from time to time on what game it is going to be. From Valheim to Minecraft to Ark Survival. - Running a media server like Plex or Jellyfin - Hosting VMs with Kubernetes clusters, etc for development testing env. Current situation: - Sadly, for now, I can only connect with WiFi, this will change in the future. - I do have a lifetime HexOS license. Hardware: Case: Jonsbo N3 HDD: probably 3x 8 TB (not sure which I heard stuff about SMR or something that it is bad and will run me into problems later but not sure what I should get then.) I do understand I need at least 3 disks for proper use of HexOS RAM: 32GB(2x 16) DDR4 with ECC support(also not sure which and how I know this is supported) CPU: This I am really stuck on, I see a lot of users talk about i5 12600k IGPU. But is is kind of hard to get for me. I was wondering why the 13th/14th gen are not used? All I understand so far I should not get an F or AMD because of the bad video encoding support with PLEX and Jellyfin. I also understand that HexOS only supports x86 systems. I think that means only AMD/INTEL CPU's Motherboard: I think it needs to be an ITX size for the case? So far, I need something that can support the CPU ofc, Is it possible to support DDR4 and DDR5 on the same motherboard for future upgrades? I guess something with a lot of SATA connections was not sure if you need 3 or 6 GB. Power supply: I am not so sure what I have to look out for with the N3 case. I assumed around 500 watts. I do like to transfer my gaming PC Corsair HX750 V2 PSU to this, but not sure what to check on what fits or not. Because I do need to upgrade my gaming pc one. Raid controller: Not so sure which to get here in the Netherlands. All I know I need one with IT mode. Any guides would be nice. I also heard there are a lot of fake once's Is this true? My goal is to have a server that can last for a while and just have fun with and tinker. Thanks in advance 😄 If I need to provide any more info, please feel free to ask 😄
