  1. What's the idle power draw?
  2. I've been also looking into this. I got old i7 7700k CPU with gaming motherboard at my disposal die to PC upgrades, but worried it won't be economical on idle. I've seen the spreadsheet with low idle draw, but they are all on Fujitsu motherboards. What's the trick there? Also which one is right for my CPU? There seems to be a lack of official info on those motherboards out there. They are also using some other PSU, not your ATX kind, like I know from gaming. Would love to know more about those components, and why they are chosen most of the time.
  3. Have you measured power draw loaded and idle?
  4. That's my understanding too. Say you got 3 small drives, buy 3 large drives, pull one small out, one big in, let it rebuild, pull second small, insert second large, let it rebuild, then do the last one. Might be safer to buy fewer and bigger drives to start with, and later just expand with adding same capacity drives.
  5. I believe the data on HDD will be wiped. So probably have to figure out a way of moving the data eslewhere temporarily, then moving them back. Mind you, this HexOS is going through Beta testing, you should not treat it as a fully reliable system just yet. Bear that in mind.
  6. Start with 3 HDD for sure. Can have more if you like. I think they said on their website up to 8 HDD, so don't buy too many 😄
  7. How do people got sub 10W power draw, what do they boot from if not SSD? Thanks, good to know. Might as well not bother, 32Gb RAM is plenty as a cache
  8. Yes, can measure it once it's built. But I'm in the planning stage. If I need a different motherboard to get low power draw, different PSU, then this will affect my case selection decision. So i'd rather gather some knowledge before that.
  9. I don't think the drive with bootable OS counts towards the prefered 3 drived. It would leave you with two drives in storage pool and they'd just be a mirror copy to each other. I'm reading this becomes non-expandable.
  10. Hello Folks, I was waiting for HexOS to become available, and later build NAS for shared data storage, 2 gaming PC backups, Phone backups. Now that I've seen the Plex app, I like that as well, and probably use it too. Got old hardware from gaming PC build, just unsure if it's a good idea to use. CPU i7700K 32GB of DDR4 memory MSI gaming ATX motherboard Z270 PSU 650 80+ gold from EVGA So I plan to use integrated graphics, buy a small case, 3 or 4 HDD, then small boot SSD, and if this is a thing, maybe larger SSD for cache? Not worried about the performance, think the CPU should handle Plex transcode (think) for 4K telly. What I'm not sure about is how low can the idle draw be? I don't want anything drawing 60W draw on idle. Under 10W idle draw would be OK. Don't want a massive bill for electricity. And I just don't know if that's achievable on this platform. Also do I need ECC memory? This CPU does not suport it. Also contemplating UPS just for the NAS. Recomendations? Can my hardware even receive a signal from UPS to shut down? Never played with that. Thanks.
