+1 to the above. I don't think it's related to Truescale. If anything it should give you local access. I've always been using the direct local URL: https://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/ui/signin However, how are you accessing the local HexOS dashboard? I just noticed that when I access the portal via my local IP link (https://xxx.xxx.x.xxx:43705/settings), the TrueNAS settings button is greyed out. But when I access from a https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.local.hexos.com:43705/settings link (basically via https://deck.hexos.com/ that redirects to local), the TrueNAS button is available again.

Does the RAM speed matter much for server applications? As I understand, it may not be worth it or have very minimal upsides to have some crazy gamer RAM in the server given that most of the time it'll just idle. I came across some slower (2933) DDR4 Server ram from a lot and thinking of replacing the NAS ram with that and repurpose the faster stuff for something else.

You have my word! Thanks! I certainly wish computer cases were a bit more easy going with their color and designs, but I guess that's what DIY is for 😄

Hi All! I recently stumbled upon @DomSmith's topic on a power efficient server and while I mostly understand how it was achieved and that I definitely can't replicate the same power consumption with my hardware, I wanted to see if anyone has any tips or tricks on minimizing the rig's power consumption while idle. I did read up on this forum and off it about drive spin-down and it sounds like a gamble I'd like to avoid for drive longevity. In the long run and with today's prices, I feel like a bit more power is worth the drive health. I also poked around the MB BIOS settings like power saving and C states, but had to backtrack as that severely impacted sudden loads like LLM loading up with server just locking up until restart. If there is any know-how out there, please share it! PS. possibly not the right section for this, but only one I found on hardware discussions.

Sorry for an extra message, but +1 that having some way to set up recycle bin through HexOS would be great, since average users probably wouldn't wanna play around with scripts or other more technical stuff to enable this functionality.

Hm, yeah, looks like the new version of TrueNAS doesn't support recycle bin for "Default Share" folders. @PenguinKingdoes your setup still work after the update?

I guess, there is a tool for every problem! Some may just be better than others depending on what your use case is. I know there are a ton of "Raspberry Pi (or one board) NAS" videos on Youtube, but I feel like they definitely lack versatility for heavier tasks. It is, however, all relative. If I were getting into this today and didn't have the used components on hand, I'd definitely just go with something small and cheap. Also, those minis look like they could pack a punch too!

Hi all! I wanted to share my NAS journey starting with something completely nonsensical to something I actually daily drive now. The first one was a DIY fully 3d printed case before I understood what all of this home lab stuff even was. I tried to connect several SSDs and an HDD to a raspberry pi via a USB hub. Surprisingly, it worked, but very badly. Open Media Vault didn't quite like this setup. The next attempt was a mini NAS based on axzez's Interceptor board crammed into a Sony DVD RW drive enclosure. It was actually decent! But too little space for upgrades. I initially ran OMV on it, but after a while HexOS came out, and that was my first HexOS NAS. That's when I began getting a grip on how a NAS actually works, what HexOS is for, and how to get the most out of it. So the next interim solution was a spare converted Mac Pro case with some custom 3d printed HDD holder bars, but still based on the aforementioned Interceptor board. This worked ok for files but lacked versatility for any other home lab use cases. I later upgraded this setup to a normal PC motherboard and relocated the HDDs to the top shelf. That was way better and that's when I got into all of the side apps that HexOS/TrueNAS could run like local AI, Immich, Plex, Jellyfin, etc. Finally, I shelled out for a case designed for a NAS. And what a difference that made! Building a NAS in a case designed for one is night and day compared to building in a hacked together Mac case.

sunny_raven started following Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model
-
Hello! Getting a used Mac Mini in the current market with a limited budget may be best, especially, if you're not looking to drive it pretty hard. If a raspberry pi can eke out 4k, then a decent-spec mac will do great! So if you're looking to just host files and media, that should do great! If you're looking for a (slightly) better upgrade path than a mac, though, you could even look into some pre-owned office PCs like ones from Free Geek here: https://www.ebay.com/str/freegeekportland/Desktops-All-In-Ones/_i.html?_sacat=171957

The first and best thing to do may be to shut down the server and try to disconnect and reconnect the drive and the connection to the storage card if you're using one. Re-seating the connector fixed the issue for me when I got a degradation warning. In terms of reducing the pool, AFAIK, you can only expand the pool or replace the drives. But I would let others confirm on that front.

Server freezes up when exceeding RAM useage
sunny_raven replied to sunny_raven's question in OS & Features
Update: I think I was able to get to the bottom of it. A while ago, after upgrading the server, I set a bunch of power efficiency options in BIOS to minimise the hardware impact on the power bill. However, it seems these settings may impact the system stability at high loads, which is what I've been experiencing. I also played around with the EXPO profile a little bit since I've seen system instability with some stock profiles in the past. -
Server freezes up when exceeding RAM useage
sunny_raven replied to sunny_raven's question in OS & Features
Absolutely! AMD Ryzen 9 7950X with 128 GB of RAM 5x4TB HDDs for NAS data storage 3x2TB SSDs for apps and related app data I noticed that very often the RAM cache usage sits at 80-90% with very little overhead for the apps. Last time the server froze-up was when I started metadata refresh in Immich. I hadn't monitored the server during that time, but almost certain that it froze due to the app reaching the total RAM capacity. I also read up on TrueNAS caching and it sounded like there is no way to set up an upper limit for how much it could use. PS Also, I realised that before I signed in I hadn't seen all of the possible threads to ask the question so this thread may not be the most appropriate to ask. For any mods, please feel free to move this to the appropriate section or delete this/mark as solved and I can re-post this accordingly. -
Hi everyone! I've been noticing an issue with my HexOS server whereby the system will freeze up. The system stops showing up in the Deck dashboard, and I can't access any local apps. However, the server hardware is still running. The server never recovers, so I have to reset it via the button on the case. From what I've been able to deduce, this seems to happen when the server comes close to or reaches the RAM usage maximum. I noticed that TrueNAS uses a big chunk of RAM for cache, which is understandable. However, when running Ollama (when models spill over to RAM) or when running other RAM heavy tasks (like metadata refresh in Immich) it seems the cache usage doesn't go down to free up extra space and the system runs into the hardware limits. Now, onto the question -- is there a way to set a hard limit on the TrueNAS cache RAM usage or allow the server to manage RAM a bit more intelligently? If there is any way to collect any necessary logs, please let me know how I may be able to do that and let me know if I can share any other extra info to troubleshoot this.

Do you have to do anything for encryption certificates for immich through this cloudflare approach? I was able to enable Plex this way, but immich is still giving me trouble -- as I understand, it doesn't like being accessed via https I'm only just getting into the self hosted game and without much experience I worry about exposing the local network to the internet
