  1. Power on could be from an other device with Wake-on-LAN or within the BIOS. Spinning down is a pain. It doesn't work for me anymore since TrueNAS removed S.M.A.R.T settings.   2. My drives have never spun down even with Advanced Power Management Level 1. The solution: I moved the System Data Set to the boot-drive (System –> Advanced Settings –> Storage –> Configure) and now they do!
