  1. Hey all. Q3 update coming Monday. Bunch of other goodies and content with it.

  2. We officially announced our intention to delay VM support as part of the Q1 status update back in March. Since then, its important to note that TrueNAS pivoted their VM strategy again when they decided to drop Incus for traditional VMs and go back to their previous implementation with libvirt (as of 25.04.2). Due to all of this, we decided it would be best to restart the VM implementation in 2026 once development is finalized. I can see the confusion here, but we never promised all of these features would be delivered with the 1.0 release. Our focus on 1.0 is achieving platform stability. Furthermore, you're forgetting one pretty major feature that wasn't listed on the site: Local UI. This is the next feature we are focusing on after the Q3 release. Snapshots and Buddy Backups are still possibilities for this year, but likely would continue to carry the "beta" tag into 2026 to give more time for public testing. The Q3 update is nearly complete, which will carry some pretty big features including MULTIPLE new curated apps and folder support for Apple Time Machine/Quotas. Furthermore, we will have a new "Experimental Features" toggle that will enable users to create Encrypted folders as well as provide access to our new app templating/install scripts solution.

  3. https://www.gingerling.co.uk/swapping-my-to-more-power-efficient-hardware-my-hexos-nas-how-did-it-go/ Hi Gang!! I've been a bit quiet over the summer as I went backpacking with my little kids in Europe. We had an amazing time but I was totally exhausted after. The above is my latest blog. the tldr is I nearly halved my running costs with a change to hardware that wasn't expensive. Honestly the kit is about the same price as what I had already paid for to begin with. Next I will finally get to running this update and be back soon with that story ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you're all having fun!! Anna x

  4. Oh great, now we have multiple "official" sources of information. And just to be clear, the calendar third quarter is July 1st to September 30th. That's about twelve days. to Q4. Yeah I know Eshtek is well within their rights to create their own financial calendar that could put the end of Q3 in December like many large corporations. But until we hear differently, we are still in beta with no official release. Just for context I pulled the following definition of beta from google. "A beta refers to the stage in software development where a product is released to a select group of users for testing and feedback before its official launch. It allows developers to gather valuable insights, identify and fix bugs, and make improvements based on user experiences.". I am in the beta because I contributed my cash to the cause like most everyone else in the forums. And correct me if I am wrong but buying into a beta is pretty common, especially on windows or in the gaming world. If the beta needs more work we would just have to accept that but that goes both ways. Saying something coming in Q3 without establishing what Q3 mean and if that expectation is still true is as important and the user community accepting change without clubbing a company over the head with old estimates (if that company is honest and gives updated estimates). Can we establish where the official source is (and if you think you already have, you have completely underestimated a user community ability to wreck your perfectly good plan). And can we stop saying "we didn't promise anything" followed up by "we have already said that would be in the third quarter". Those are quotes take directly from the forum under the title VM & version 1.0. And even though this is a good example of the clubbing with old posts I said we shouldn't do, it is also a good example of this makes perfect sense to the poster but not the audience. Takeaways: User community stop using passive aggressive tactics to try to get your own personal additions unless specifically asked for like "What apps would you like to see next". Developers/moderators/leadership you are physically incapable of over communicating at this juncture of the project. And as I said above, if you think you already have, you have completely underestimated a user community ability to wreck your perfectly good plan. I am so excited about this application and it potential that I have told more that 100 people about it. While many are taking a more conservative approach and waiting for things like the announcement of the monthly price, I have a couple candidates for the buddy backup when it comes available. And as I have said before, this app is already a success for me. I just hope we can start tightening things up soon.

  5. Having AMP (https://cubecoders.com/AMP) supported would allow users to get game servers up and running super fast and easy! I know my primary use cases for hexos is media streaming, image backups, and gaming servers. The first two are already covered with plex and immich. Just need a game server app for hexos and therefore recommend AMP!

  6. Do we have any expected timeline for the Q3 update? I only ask because I wanted support for TrueNAS 25.10 which carries Blackwell NVIDIA drivers but that only comes out end of October.

  8. Hi, i don't really know if it's possible or if it has been discussed earlier but is it possible for HexOS to display differents pcie cards information (like what card is in what slot) or direcly display the GPU informations like the usage the drivers etc a little like it is done with the cpu informations? I think it could be a great options for those who use gpu for transcoding or in VM... thank you all ๐Ÿ˜

  9. Hey it would be cool to have a straight forward way to install Nextcloud (e.g. the all in one edition https://nextcloud.com/blog/how-to-install-the-nextcloud-all-in-one-on-linux/) on HexOS. I set it up myself on my homelab, but the setup was not as easy and while the software itself works great, I'm not as satisfied with my implementation. It offers a lot of features with a client that is available on a lot of devices already, essentially substituting Cloud storage, Google Calender, Contacts, Office products, Slack (e.g. for small businesses) and as I just saw even LLM like ChatGPT. This would add huge additional value to HexOS, since you easily could substitute a lot of subscriptions that way, while having enormous privacy benefits, a thing the target audience of HexOS would surely profit of. Especially if there is also a way to safely expose it to the internet.

  10. Could we get a forum section for install scripts? That way as a community we can post a thread for a specific app and people can share their scripts and ask for feedback? I think that'd be handy, but I don't think it needs to go in the normal Applications support forum because that might confuse people as it's definitely a more advanced thing at the moment! Thanks

  12. Evening, or morning for some. Here is my rantings about Permissions. If asked you what an app in the app user or group would be able to do with the following permissions, what would you say? USER : READ WRITE EXECUTE GROUP : READ WRITE EXECUTE OTHER : READ WRITE EXECUTE You'd think that yeah the apps should be able to read, write, execute etc. (Before you ask, yes the user/group were both set to App), but for some god unknown reason no. it didn't want to. Then eventually after a random stripe it did work and then I realized, "hey I can't access my shows file I set up to review the work of Sonarr?" No I the user, aka the Other in this scenario, CANNOT access my files. Alright I'll just go to ACL and add, "User : ME" Me being Me the user I set up for my Truenas, "Great i can now access my shows... hey why did my TV stop playing Plex videos?" Now my Plex and Sonarr don't see and can't read my shows, Why does adding ME as a 4th user in an ACL cause it to bug out? Alright let's double check maybe my User is set to like some weird settings... Nothing noticeable let's set everyone to be Read write execute again, and for good luck, i'll add an EVERYONE full control of EVERYTHING. For some added context though, this is what I dealt with today for the last hour or so when yesterday I was tearing my hair out with the same issues with just setting up Sonarr. So here's my proposition, a simple feature for simple people. a basic toggle button for what apps see and have permission to each dataset folder.

  13. Would be happy to read more updates. The last blog post is from May. An update every 4-8 weeks would help maintain belief in this project. Actually, it looks dead.

  14. I know what you are trying to say with the under the hood comment but this is still a beta. The devs would be within their rights to say Plex and Immich are just examples of how HexOS apps are simple to deploy. Now if this app goes live and you are still saying the same thing, now that's another story. For now we somewho need to harness the passion and test the options and processes we will use after go live. Otherwise how will the devs know it works on all king of hardware and "unique" combinations to satisfy our expectations?

  15. Yes it would be nice if there was a dev blog somewhere with more regular updates. The blog on the main website hasn't had anything since May.

  16. Hi all, Just seeking clarification here - the HexOS team have said they're still targeting V1.0 for release this year. A topic on Reddit has a response from the HexOS_Official user stating Can the team clarify when VM support is coming, as that was a major selling point for HexOS. Will V1.0 be launched without a major feature? I understand that 25.04 pushed back the release of VM features, but from the how I read the Q1 update (the last time this was spoken about, in March...) I took it to be that it was being done, just at a lower priority than the App support, but would still be coming this year. If I am looking at the HexOS website, we are currently at 3/6 of the below features. Even if they launch App deployment in the next few weeks for their Q3 update, I don't see how they are able to complete VMs, Buddy Backups & Snapshots in the next 3 months, which means they can't actually be targeting a 2025 release, but we've had no official word saying the release has been pushed back. The last word on this was from March 7th:

  17. I believe integrating Home Assistant with HexOS could be a game-changer for the operating system, offering functionality that is sorely lacking in almost all other OS platforms today. A Home Assistant integration would allow users to monitor and manage their NAS more effectively. Imagine being able to track critical metrics such as system uptime, array health, disk health checks, and the overall status of your storage systems โ€” all from within Home Assistant. Furthermore, adding control features would significantly enhance the user experience. It would be fantastic if users could automate tasks like rebooting or stopping/starting applications, VMs, or containers directly through Home Assistant. Additionally, automating disk spin-downs during off-peak hours for power savings would be a powerful and eco-friendly feature. The potential of Home Assistant integration is vast, and it's difficult to fully capture all the possibilities in a single topic. However, the core idea is simple: having such an integration, with continuous updates and new features, would be a major advantage for HexOS. While most other operating systems either lack similar functionality or offer only basic, limited capabilities, HexOS could stand out by providing a more comprehensive, user-friendly, and flexible solution.

  25. Those are very weird examples. HexOS isn't a movie or video game. It's about as different from those as it gets. And, even so, HexOS has a world class marketing campaign behind it already. In reality, marketing matters very little to a niche, but excellent (or terrible) product that is supposed to be used daily for years and years. Word of mouth among enthusiasts matters much more. And that will come naturally, if the product is amazing.

  29. Ahoy, did a quick look but couldn't find an answer, So do we know if HexOS will be moving to TrueNAS Fangtooth or Goldeye for the next release "Q3"? Im running a intel N355 and Electric Eel 24.10 doesn't seem to detect a few features of the processor (Onboard Graphics) and Network interfaces, I assume this is kernel related with 24.10 relating the N355 release. When I force upgrade TrueNas to Fangtooth 25.04 the onboard graphics start working but it breaks the HexOS interface.

  30. Fully agreed; with HexOS 1.0 stable claimed to be months away, this is when communication needs to be clear and simple. I'm assuming (and we all know what that means) that Eshtek uses calendar quarters, not made-up financial quarters. Thus, pieced together from the little I can see: Q2 (current beta) is based on 24.10.x Q3 (coming beta before Sept 30) may be based on 25.04.x Q4 (coming stable before Dec 31) may be based on 25.10.x I agree; Eshtek ought to put all release information into a chronological blog, IMO (or any one source) Some things are only on reddit, some things only in the forums, some things only on the website, some things only in YouTube interviews, etc. Now, I haven't bought the lifetime license yet so maybe those forums are more regimented. I'm waiting to see this communication at least a little more consistent and open.

  31. Fair point. We are planning to update the site for end of year with more content and details. I'll make sure this gets addressed. There are three types of issues that can exist for a given app: issues with the app itself (responsibility of the app developer), issues with the TrueNAS-cataloged container (responsibility of TrueNAS), and issues with the app curation itself (responsibility of HexOS). For issues with the app, if we can clearly identify the problem, we have no problem carrying the torch up to the app author to get proper visibility if required. For issues with the cataloged app in TrueNAS, we can escalate to TrueNAS directly for intervention if we can identify the root cause properly. For issues with the curation, we can quickly modify our curation using the new system to push out a fixes. We also will have a new docs site that will launch with the Q3 update explaining out the curation system works and how others can participate to help us fast-track the curation of other apps while we continue to work on core features.
    1 point
  32. Yeah, as mentioned in the post, I saw this. I just thought it meant instead of being early in 2025 it would be late 2025. I understand this, but your website only says "*Some features will not be immediately available upon beta release.". If you are launching the product and having people pay full price for it, you need to either update your website to remove the not available features, or update it to make it VERY clear that these are future state features and not applicable to the current state of the product. I am mostly excited for the new App Curation system, and to see how the team resolves the issues with the existing apps (Plex & Immich). I am cautiously optimistic about this update being the first time it feels like I will be using HexOS instead of TrueNAS.
    1 point
  33. I know that Immich is already a Curated app, but for me, it has the big downside that Users have no e2ee and as an Admin of the Server ill be able to all Files/Photos/Videos a user has uploaded to the NAS. ENTE has e2ee and allows any file uploaded to be encrypted and not be readable by the Admin of the NAS - which is a huge selling point if I want to convince my Family and Friends to finally quit buying iCloud Storage and switch to a home hosted NAS solution. I would like to hear if the Community would be interested if ENTE gets a curated installation, and if the HEXos team maybe already has a plan to add it to the list.

  34. Thank you for the detailed response to my vent post. Sorry, This is the first time Iโ€™ve logged in since writing it. Also responding on an ipad so little more difficult to respond. I did want to take a moment to comment on two pieces. re: devlogs - it may seem like Iโ€™m stuck on that, but itโ€™s not because Iโ€™m a zealot about such things or even a wish to read long technical updates. Really it was more about delivering to the community an ongoing sentiment of progress and altering the perception that arises. I really wasnโ€™t advocating for your team to all start blogging things here. More for a single person to deliver even a two-liner like โ€œwe made significant progress the last two weeks on encryption. No new delays.โ€ Or โ€œMurphy hit us this week and weโ€™ve had to shift our timeline. Added three weeks to our expected ship.โ€ - yes, I hate doing the devlogs myself , but once Iwas forced to start doing it the pressure and expectations surrounding project expectations made life so much better. Thus my push, but I totally understand your position on this. re: apps - There isnโ€™t one specific thing I was looking to create or port as it all depended on immediate use case (back then it was a friendly working version of home assistant). More-so it was a โ€˜hey, we can do these things for and as a community while you guys focus on the core/more important stuff. Thanks again! Iโ€™ll try and stay a little more updated with whatโ€™s going on. Might boot up the machine I was using and ch3ckout the latest updates if I get a chance later today.

  36. I would like to use HexOS as a sort of app-server (to manage my docker) and not as my primary storage. I already have multiple dedicated separate NAS boxes (Synology and Ubiquiti) that contain my family pictures, linux isos and other data I want my applications to use. Thus, I would like to mount various remote shares on hexOS so I can pass them along to Plex, Immich and other apps. I know (and I did in the past) that I can use the linux shell, create .smbcredentials and edit fstab to mount it, but it would be amazing to have a UI for it in HexOS. Is that something that is will happen in the future? As an explanation for why I don't simply run docker compose on ubuntu - truenas (and hexOS by extension) makes configuring redundant storage much easier - I can simply install truenas/hexOS and have mirrored boot drives and RaidZ1 pool for my appdata/cache/thumbs etc, while on a regular server I would have to do a bunch of shell stuff that I don't care to learn to be frank. To be clear: I am not asking about accessing hexOS-managed drives. I am asking about accessing remote drives from other machines on hexOS and passing them to various apps.

  37. I would like to see first party support for placing any app behind some of the most popular VPNs (PIA, Nord, Express, Proton, Tailscale, etc), as well as custom VPNs (WireGuard, OpenVPN, etc). For example, you may install โ€œThe Loungeโ€ IRC client and have all internet communication pass through a PIA VPN so that your home IP is not exposed while chatting. Traditional methods of doing this involve painful configuration of iptables or other firewall rules. I believe this is an area where HexOS could really simplify things: Install a VPN plugin, authenticate with it, and then simply assign an app to a VPN plugin via the appโ€™s settings if desired. It would be fully accessible from the home network without going through the VPN, but all internet traffic would go through the VPN with a kill switch in case the VPN goes down. Thoughts?

  38. I ran into the issue that my boot drive was corrupted and I had to restore my HexOS install from scratch. I found posts that said basically just reinstall it but nothing that explained the process. I had several issues, when I reinstalled HexOS it wanted to wipe my raid, once i disconnected the raid and went through the initial setup, I had no shares. So I wanted to document this so that others with this issue find a solution instead trying to rename and recreate shares and move data between datasets. This was done after I figured out a process for doing this so sorry if I missed any steps. Step 1. Remove the bad boot drive. Step 2: Disconnect the Raid drives. Step 3: Install your new boot drive and usb HexOS install media. Step 4: Follow the standard install process, including setting your admin account and claiming your server. When you finish the setup you will not have any disks so you will name your server and just continue. Step 5: Shutdown the system. Step 6: Reconnect your raid drives and boot up. Step 7: Log in to the TrueNAS gui by going to the IP address of your server in the browser and using the credentials you set up during install Username: truenas_admin Password: <whatever you entered at install>. Step 8: Go to Storage Tab and select Import Pool. 9: Select your pool from the drop down it should be named 'HDDs' and select Import. It will take a few minutes to import and complete. At this point the storage should be detected in HexOS and you should be able to start creating shares, but your existing folders and shares will not have returned. To get your shares back you must recreate them by renaming your datasets and naming them back as follows: Step 1: Under Datasets you can find all of your existing data on the RAID. Find the Dataset you want to restore in HEXOS and note the name. Step 2: Back in HexOS go to the Folder tab and select 'New Folder' Note: you may want to recreate your old users manually or create your folders with public access and recreate the users and add permissions later. Step 3: Create a new folder with the same name as the Dataset but add a 1 (In this case 'Plex1'). Make sure to keep the array the same 'HDDs; and give it the permissions you want (this can be adjusted later). Step 4: Back in TrueNAS go to Shares and select the edit button on the 'Plex1' share, depending on screen resolution you may need to scroll the horizontal scroll bar to the right. Step 5: In the side bar remove the '1' from the Path or use the drop down to select the original shared folder, then click into the Name field which should auto update and remove the 1. Step 6 Scroll down and click 'Save' and you will be prompted to restart the SMB service, do this and your share should be updated. Step 7: Navigate to the dataset tab select the 'Plex1' dataset and click delete on the right side. It will make you confirm by typing the whole dataset path. Step 8: When this is done you should be able to refresh the folders tab on the HexOS page and see the updated folder name (it took a minute to refresh for me). Redo this for each share that you wish to recreate. Once I did this and set up the users and permissions correctly, other servers I used to connect to my shares started working seamlessly. I didn't experience this but I can imagine you may run into some permissions issues since the new users in HexOS could have different IDs than before. Unfortunately you would need to manually adjust permissions on the files and folders. P.S. I imagine minutes after posting this someone will tell me I am dumb and should have done it this way, or someone else posted better over here. If that's the case let me know and Ill point to a better example, but when I needed help I couldn't find it.

  39. Hi all. My $.02 is that there should be a way to echo or display the TrueNAS errors from within the HexOS management GUI. Basically, I have been trying to apply the new update(s) to my system, and it took me forever to realize that they were failing because I didn't assign enough space to my boot drive to download and unpack the update contents.

  40. I'm not saying it is right for your situation but I have been using Tailscale for remote access to Immich and the NAS storage itself. I picked it because someone did a pretty good install guide and posted it. Again, I;m not saying it the best for you. I can say though that for someone who doesn't know squat about TrueNAS or Linux or Docker containers and the like, I can saw it worked first try. I am curious if anyone wants to volunteer some alternatives. I believe Cloudflare is sprinkled throughout the forum as well as the general concept of reverse proxy and port forwarding.

  41. Hey HexOS folks. I know a lot of us are feeling both frustrated about the pace of updates and hopeful about what's coming in the future for this platform. I have always been intimidated by platforms like UnRAID and TrueNAS - so this has been an opportunity for me to dip my toes into self-hosting. That said, the pace of communication from the team on the forum, Reddit, and elsewhere has been so very frustrating. The mods here are great and do what they can but we're not just here to get a product, I'm sure I speak for more than just myself in saying I'd love to see behind the curtain a little bit as an early adopter. Please, please, please consider this a priority, because idk about the rest of you but I can feel a fair bit of frustration starting to build here.

  45. For example, such UGREEN Nas has a mobile or desktop application that serves for remote access via a generated token. Although I did not understand how it is with granting access to a friend, and the fact that I have access to the interface through this token does not mean that I have remote access to the installed applications. I don't know how it works, I just noticed that new systems like UGREEN or FNOS go this way. It's probably a better way than Tailscale, which I would have to manually set for each friend or family. In addition, I noticed that these systems have Internet applications such as a gallery, a movie application and a file manager in the user interface, so through this mobile application and token you have access to everything directly from one interface and you do not have to open 10 applications separately.

  46. I really dont know how simple is Tailscale going to be for everyone. I have not yet set it for my parents. I have been making it work for past 2 days, and got it working. My brother curently lives in Norway and can acces the data physicaly located in Czech Republic. Here is how: Go to Tailscale ยท Best VPN Service for Secure Networks and download the client for your PC/Mac or find it in APP store/Google play store. Log in with your prefered identity provider. You will need two (2) devices to make it work. After you have logged in into two (2) of your devices you will be taken to your command deck. Click on Settings. Then go to Keys - and Generate auth key Click Generate Key - you can add description at the top. Then copy the key. Open HexOS Comand deck and find Tailscale at the apps - log in to TrueNas. Se Set your time zone, hostname to what ever you want and paste the Auth Key you have generated in Tailscale. I use my server as an Exit Node as well - I'm trying to run Pi-hole on my Nas but just to a little succes. The Exit Node box is not filled in. If you want to use your server as and Exit Node you have to check it. Leave the rest as is and click Save at the bottom. That is it. When you want to get to your data just copy the ip of your device in the tailscale menu and add \\ in front of it. You will be prompted to log in into the drive so put in your user name and password you have created in HEXOS and you are good to go. This works on windows and iOS - i have set it up as a server in my Files app and in the VLC player to play media. I do not have different operating systems to confirm that it works there as well but i imagine it does. Hopefuly someone will find this helpful. I never used any of this and it took a lot of time to figure it out. Mainly the \\ before the IP adress. Im just u noob - i know :D. But it works without a problem. You will just be limited by your ISP - and the upload bandwith. With just 20Mb/s i cannot stream in 4K. But 1080p usualy works fine.

  48. Hello HexOS Team, I noticed a potentially misleading statement in this Hardware & Storage Requirements/Compatibility FAQ regarding ZFS pool expansion with two drives. The current note "Pool will not be expandable if using only 2 drives" is technically incorrect. In ZFS: Two-disk mirror configurations can be fully expanded Drives can be replaced one-by-one with larger capacity drives The resilver process works seamlessly Many users prefer simple two-disk configurations, especially when repurposing laptops. Could you clarify or revise this statement to accurately reflect ZFS expansion capabilities?
