  1. Hey, you can use this raidz calculator, set number of disk groups to 1 and fill in all other numbers. If yoh have 3 or more disks hexos will create a raidz1, so you set this as raidz type and you get your usable storage in TB. (Don't forget to convert this to TiB) https://www.raidz-calculator.com/

  2. What do you think your pool size should be ? If it is non important storage it can be done with a pair of drives but if you only have a pair of 8tb disks you will only have 8tb of space in a simple zfs. If you want to build one that will last you with future proofing storage and redundancy I would look at a minimum of a 5 drive setup that will give you 2 paired drives and a failover . I built my NAS with future proofing in mind at least for a while and found some killer deals on ebay for 4tb drives and currently have 15 in my build split into 2 pools , one for all my data that is long term storage and the other is for plex and all the other things that get used on a daily .

  3. I just ran a test. I copied 210GB of data over SMB using 2.5GbE Ethernet adapters. The average speed was 277MB/s, and the total time was 11 minutes and 51 seconds. That’s at full speed. In general, SMB is better for large files, while NFS is better for small files. However, as you can see, performance can depend heavily on your configuration and the client you’re using. It seems like something isn’t right in your setup—perhaps a driver issue?

  4. I'm using a RaidZ2 without any issues, but I'm also not using any of the apps, since I'm running an Ubuntu VM with docker for all my apps. I didn't follow all the discussions but it seems that destroying the first pool created results in apps become unusable until some paths/settings are fixed in TrueNas, but don't quote me on that, maybe someone else has more information about this. To add to @Mobius explanations about the Vdevs: Once you loose all the drives from 1 vdev you loose everything. Meaning with 3x2 drive vdevs you can only loose 1 drive per vdev (but 3 drives in total if they are all from different vdevs) and with 2x3 drive vdevs you can loose 2 drives per vdev without loosing any data. @L-Pif you have 10 gbit/s networking, you might want to look into adding an nvme cache drive as an L2ARC. ARC is a read only cache, which is keeping the files which you might need next in a cache in memory for quick access. You can extend this with an L2ARC cache which, stores additional files on a dedicated drive. If this drive is an SSD it's gonna ready and serve those files significantly faster then if Hexos needed to read them from the slow HDDs. This might make sense in your case if you have 10gbit/s networking, everything below and the speed benefits are likely to be marginal at best. And no there is no write cache in Hexos only a read cache. 🙂

  5. I believe some users reported using raid z2 without any issues. If you want speed you may wanna 2 or 3 raid z1 vdevs combined into 1 pool. As far as i know raid z1 gives you the performance of a single drive however for every vdev you have the performance increases ergo 3 mirror vdevs will have the performance of 3 drives 2 z1 vdevs of 3 drives each will have the performance of 2 drives.

  6. We have no plans to support Active Directory directly through our UI at this time. Users who want AD support should probably be using native TrueNAS as permissions management won’t be the same once AD is introduced.

  7. Looking at the cabinet space, depth seems to be the biggest challenge. An Intel NUC is already 115 x 115 mm, and then you still have the ports at the back. I’m not sure how much storage you need, but there isn’t much room for hard drives. Furthermore, I agree with @Theo that running your router in a VM is not ideal. As a solution, you could consider using two devices: one for NAS (storage, apps, VMs) and one as a router. Router Suggestions: You could consider a mini PC from Ikoolcore, which can run pfSense. There are many other vendors offering similar devices: 🔗 Ikoolcore R2 Mikrotik and Ubiquiti also offer great routers for a homelab. NAS Suggestions: Perhaps the Terramaster (F8 SSD Plus or F8 SSD) could be a good option: 🔗 Terramaster F8 SSD Plus Or the LincStation N1 (the N2 with 10GbE is launching soon): 🔗 LincStation N2 NAS Review I personally use an Aoostar WTR Pro. It supports four hard drives and has its ports on the side, which might be useful given your limited space: 🔗 Aoostar WTR Pro These are just a few ideas—I hope they help! You can find great reviews of many NAS devices on YouTube. Also, ServeTheHome is a useful website. Just my 2 cents.

  8. Maybe others will chime in but IMO i wouldn't run my router inside a VM, inside my NAS... I can just see too many things to go wrong, and too many issues getting everything set up! If anything as a VM inside Proxmox Installed on the bare metal, then Hex in a separate container at minimum. As for routers in general, if space is an issue, have you looked into Ubiquiti? i've got the Unifi UCG-Ultra which is tiny but powerful, and will hardly take up any space, then you can choose where to put an AP. As for the NAS, if space is the biggest concern, then really a SFF M.2 pre built nas would probably be the go too? Perhaps something like this from UGreen or Asustor. But then i hope you have budget for the SSD's. Also if space is an issue, again a small Prebuilt 2 Bay Nas could work, or if you want large capacity, perhaps look into / think about placing it elsewhere and running ethernet (if you don't have runs already?)

  9. Sincerest apologies everyone. This is taking longer than it should. Hope to have this resolved shortly.

  11. I'm having the same issue, Rebooted the server twice and my browser. I also cleared the cache. I'm trying to get both Plex and Immich, neither will install. After the reboots though I have new "Platform folders" : Photos, Media, Music, Movies, Shows, Videos. But the apps only show the option to install. Still digging into it but I'll update if I get it running.
