So I use a host vpn on my firewall/router to remotely access my server (I have never used tailscale but I think it does the same thing, right?). With nginx+DNS registar+SSL cert you would not need to host a vpn you could could acess it like other website. The use case for example is for non-tech savi remote family members who do not understand vpns or networking, they wouldn't have to fiddle with ovpn or wg files, or more accurately you wouldnt need to have to try to walk them through it over the phone. Your server services would work like any other website/app they are used to. Secondly there are some apps that I've found that https is a requirement.

Hello! Getting a used Mac Mini in the current market with a limited budget may be best, especially, if you're not looking to drive it pretty hard. If a raspberry pi can eke out 4k, then a decent-spec mac will do great! So if you're looking to just host files and media, that should do great! If you're looking for a (slightly) better upgrade path than a mac, though, you could even look into some pre-owned office PCs like ones from Free Geek here: https://www.ebay.com/str/freegeekportland/Desktops-All-In-Ones/_i.html?_sacat=171957

Thank Damimone. I saw the Folders page but it was pretty space on details. It says "share files over the network" but no other details on how that works.
-
For the first question, I think the answer is : Not yet. https://docs.hexos.com/blog/2025-11-25.html For the second, I think this is the Folder feature: https://docs.hexos.com/features/folders/

I am thinking about getting a last intel generation 2018-2020 Mac Mini to use as my server. They are going for about $140usd. I already have a have a hard drive enclosure that I have been using as a shitty plex server without any parity. I am sure there are much better ideas for a simple small prebuilt under $150... so what are they?

do I really have to use https://deck.hexos.com/. Can I just disable https://deck.hexos.com/ and connect to the server on the local network? I looked through the https://docs.hexos.com/features/ but I did not see anything about file shares like NFS, SMB, file shares? What about iSCSI?
-
Is it possible to back up the hexos configuration as something like a xml file? So all the settings can be backed up. Possible to automate the back up on a regular basis?

You rock, interesting fact, Chat GPT highlighted this post. Giving you Credit because i was also trying to fix this.

I had the same issue where HEX Deck would not recognize my server (deck said it was offline) but TrueNas UI worked. I realized it was my fault, I blocked it on my ubiquiti firewall accidentally when i was troubleshooting another issue. That's why truenas works because the HEX OS Deck has to call to Eshtek's server and the truenas ui does not. to answer another question in this forum, the local ui will mask this issue, not fix, because it will allow local connection, but wont change the fact that your server is blocked from external internet firewall level so connected to Eshtek wont work (only for this exact issue though). Another symptom of this exact issue was truenas did not have external internet access either, the app catalog was failing to update. Good luck to you guys hopefully this helps.

That worked thank you so much

The reconnecting by naming the same as seen in truenas also worked for me. It didn't want to the first time trying to set up with private access, but tried again with defaults and it worked. If anyone is wondering, I did "unclaim" my old server, and just named everything the same again. Had to restore after both my boot drives died ... I don't recommend "Orico" SSD's 😭. Learned my "you get what you pay for" lesson again and now have a WD boot drive redundant with some crappy old spinning rust from a old laptop that I'll replace at some point.

Installed the latest HexOS and now I've lost 2 of my 5 hard drives. In the past after waiting awhile ZFS always found all 5 of the hard drives and restored the the NAS to full working condition. ZFS hasn't done it's repair magic yet. I hope within a few days I'll be up and running. In the meantime, how do I initiate a scrub? Thanks

If you're seeing 'Failed to start transient service unit: Unit websocat.service was already loaded or has a fragment file', then you can try: sudo systemctl restart websocat

Hey I just tried this because hexos is reporting my server being offiline but I am still able to use all the apps. I pasted the script and I got an error "Failed to start transient service unit: Unit websocat.service was already loaded or has a fragment file." I gave it a minute and hexos is still reporting offline, any other ideas?

sik started following Yunohost style domain integration
-
Hi there! I would love to have a way to have access to the server via my own domain. The way Yunohost its doing is fairly simple but breakes at lieased for me from time to time. Maybe there is a better way to have a self protecting login page reachable via a domain. I know that there are other ways like reverseproxy or tailscale but you have to manage security and update everything in the rightway or you have to pay for a service and teach the elder how to use tailscale ( sometimes twice a month ;D ). Love to have a solution thats easy to use, secure, stable, and inexpensive. Thanks for your thoughts on this!! ❤️

Try the following. Most likely this will fix your issue. If this does, TrueNAS has a fix that is in it's next update. Login to TrueNAS interface. Left side select "system". Then after screen refreshes select "shell" from the list. Paste in the following command. *Can't use normal short cuts* Will need to use Shift + Insert Key for pasting. sudo python /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/scripts/vendor_service.py If that works within about 1 min you should be able to go to deck.hexos.com and see your server or claim it. You might need to run this after reboots. Let us know if this works. Thank you,

I have always purchased new exos drives from ebay. My last batch came straight from seagate themselves.

Hexos issue with installing apps, viewing folders, and locations.

Nor do I! As I said I've always had a great time with Rufus so I didn't even think about it - that said, Rufus DOES, of late, pop up a note about the ISO image type, and not having all the files it needs when preparing to write the HexOS ISO - see below: This reads to me as "click yes and everything will proceed according to plan" but, there could easily be something going wrong during the 'attempt to download' the required GRUB file(s). I should really have thought more about these when I saw them but, because HexOS load(ed) at least initially, and because the image seems to show up fine, I assumed it wasn't a problem, and made the proverbial ass of myself. Thanks again for all your help here, sincerely! I still might reserve the right to be mean to my NAS for a while just to let out my frustrations 😆

Can I get a DM as well? 🙏 -
I'll be setting up a second vdev. I just purchased 2 of the toshiba n300 pro's and will wait until I buy 3 more before setting the second vdev up.

Just keep in mind things like cache-size, RPM, etc. The speed of the "raid"-set can be impacted (negatively) if it's not equal or higher than the current ones. So keep that in mind while trying to look for something. Unless you *really* need to expand it with 1 disk, maybe wait out until prices are going back down?
