When upgrading my CPU, the bios asked me if I want to reset fTpm and which I said Yes and then now it wrote SPL; loading out of tree module taints kernel ZFS: module license CDDL tainted kernel. at this point, I was thinking of fresh install, but some data is already stored. Is there any direction?

I still don't have my NextCloud working right. I think some of it comes from not having used Docker before. On a previous Ubuntu Server setup, I felt like I got NextCloud working pretty quickly. This one has been stumping me. I have also tackled the TrueNas community, but that has not been helpful. Top rated comments are "Use TrueNas Scale and follow instructions". But none of the instructions line up! I gave up after weeks turned to months of looking at it in my limited free time. Waiting until someone with more experience can write up a more exhaustive walkthrough that matches more of the build. I have learned more about some things since getting HexOS, such as Tailscale, which has been amazing to learn and figure out. Connecting Next on my docket to learn is NGINX. I'm glad I can learn some of these new skills, but it comes at a price of time. They weren't in my pocket beforehand, but getting them all to work happily together has been a beast. As soon as they launch 1.0, this is my ranking of apps to install on a fresh build. 1. Plex (just because I have the eternal license) 2. Immich (loving it lots) 3. Tailscale 4. NGINX (once I figure it out)—unless someone can give me a better idea of how to share Immich photo albums with family using proxies while also being safe online. 5. NextCloud (please be 1-click launch) Suffice it to say that networking is not my forte, nor is TrueNas. But I now know more about it than I did before HexOS came out.

Truenas has no option to control fan speeds. There are some solutions available, but as far as I know they are very experimental. See as example: https://github.com/jp-powers/fan-control This script is tested in Proxmox on a Dell Poweredge R730xd. Since Proxmox is also Linux based, perhaps this script will also work in Truenas Scale. (Truenas Core is based on FreeBSD).

As far as i am aware there is no way to control fan speeds at this time. I'm not if/when we would get such a feature. I would check if there are any docker apps that would work for fan control.

docrennoc started following AMP - Game Server Control Panel Support

I just got the license recently and was hoping the same! Right now Minecraft is the only server constantly running through Amp. But we have ran several other games through this interface in the past. My plan is to do it myself but a native install would definitely be better.

I am thinking about purchasing Hex OS for my dell poweredge r730xd. I originally had some issues when trying to install Truenas since it had no easy way to control fans. Im pretty sure this is due to the communication with the computer and the fans itself since I had to enter hex code to control the fans manually via Dell IPMI. My question is, with hex os is there an easy way to control this and if not would a feature like that ever be implemented in the future

I ordered this memory module today. To have as a spare, or upgrade if I feel like it. The Pocket NAS can use up to 48GB RAM. Currently it’s 32GB.

efficiency The unsexy topic of power consumption
havelthethot replied to mggevaer's topic in Hardware
. My nas is my old CPU and mobo with some cheap gpus and 3 Seagate nas drives. I have a Rx 580 for the host os and a 2080ti water-cooled for vms. Idle it uses around 180w and around 320 with Plex and immich going full bore maxing out my 5950x. I haven't figured out what USB controller I have to pass through to use USB devices in my vms so I haven't really been able to test the power draw while running a VM with aida64 and furmark running so I don't know the max it'll pull. In my area it looks like my nas at an assumed consumption of 200w cost around $250 USD a year to power. Ouch.- 13 replies

You can reuse your HexOs license. If you disconnect your current server, then you are able to claim your new server in the HexOs deck. You can still use your Old server via the TrueNas interface. There is no such thing as automated migration available in HexOs
-
I’ve also read in this forum that there’s an idea that maybe RAID-Z1 is better for Svensson/Mr Jones. He who lives will see 😉
-
Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's possible to remove a server from the HexOS Dashboard and migrate to a newer one without having to pay $199 for it. Since I'll only be running one server at a time and the initial one might be a bit resource-limited for my future needs, I'm hoping to upgrade without extra costs. Also, is there any Offically suppored way to migrate from an Old Server running HexOS to a new one without losing all data on it and the settings?

I really have to do a deep dive in ZFS. I have learned in several forums that in specific cases RaidZ1 is more safe compared to RaidZ2. But a don't know in which cases and why. Still learning
-
I am also not a ZFS expert, but I think you created striped mirrors. Since you are playing a little, you can always test the robustness of your setup by removing 1 or 2 SSDs and see what happens
-
Here’s the TrueNAS dashboard with respectable CPU temperatures, though my NVMe drives aren’t working much yet. When they are fully engaged temperature might rise.
-
So, when I did it the correct way it looked this in TrueNAS interface. Now, remember I’m not the expert here. I rely on other knowledgeable persons. If what I’m doing is completely wrong, I hope someone will tell me 😉 Anyway, I’m not doing all this with critical data. For now I’m only playing a little. I would only work with disposable files at this stage. I still need to catch up on static IP address for the server, and other things, like backup of OS disk and storage. Life is fun 😉

Now, RAID-Z2 is the talk of the town, in this community, I feel. I’m however not the person that does what ”Svensson” does, as we say in my country. In English it would probably be ”I don’t do what Mr Jones does”. It wouldn’t hurt with another use case, where I’m trying to implement the equivalent of of RAID10 in a ZFS setting. Like a ”striped mirror” or so. I found a TrueNAS forum post explaining about this. After spotting some post online I did exactly as the person asking the question in my linked post did, which was corrected by another member: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/how-to-set-up-4-disks-with-2-striped-and-then-mirrored.7956/ Member Stephan Hochhaus: ”First I created a volume with two drives and selected mirrored, then I extended the volume with two disks and selected striped. Is that the proper way to do it?” This was answered by member paleoN: ”No, select mirror the second time as well. This will create your striped mirrors.”

First of all, yes it's possible to connect both PC and Server via Ethernet cable but you have to setup everything yourself (static IP address) and share your Internet from another NIC or WiFi to your server. However, University Networks tend to be very restrictive, I'm not sure that the Hexos Dashboard will detect the server and you might not be able to use Hexos but only the Truenas GUI. I am also uncertain if you are allowed to hook up a server to their network or if you want to do this, because depending on how you configure it, everyone on the network might be able to reach it.

As I said yesterday I always planned on using RAID10 for my old NAS build from 2015. My assumption about RAID-Z2 being the ZFS equivalent of RAID10 was corrected by @Sonic ”RAID-Z2 is more or less the equivalent of RAID6”. Now, with my limited knowledge of RAID and/or ZFS I was always fond of the idea of using RAID10. Especially after I sent a question to a Swedish computer magazine years ago, about hard drives for a NAS and talked about my idea of RAID10. ”That’s what I’m using” was the answer I got from the person at the magazine.

I have a very similar situation, I want to use an old PC to make my first NAS for backing up important files from my Windows Desktop automatically (daily). I'm also new to NAS servers so I like the idea of using HEX OS for it's ease of use. I currently still live at University, so I imagine since I don't have any access to their router or admin privileges for the WIFI or internet that setting it up through a network connection like I would at home would be very difficult. It would be adequate for me to just connect to the NAS via a wired connection for now but before investing in Hex OS I would want to make sure this is possible.

Immich SMB Folder using UUIDs and not Storage Template?
PaddyPaddo replied to PaddyPaddo's topic in Applications
I dove a bit deeper in existing topics and found a solution. This fixed it for me in the end. I did have to rerun the Storage Template Job in immich. -
Nooby here, I started with hexos recently so everything it still fresh. I added immich using hexos. When asked to use a storage template I choose: 2022/February/03/IMAGE_56437.jpg When I checked TrueNas it created some folders - it created some default folders in /Applications/immich/ - it created the Photos folder on the same level as Applications A smb share to the /Photos folder was created automagically for me. When I upload a photo, I do see the folders for it in this smb share on my win11 pc. \Photos\admin\2025\April\01 But there is no photo in there. To be sure I added my user to the smb ACL with full control. No luck. But when I create an smb share of /Applications/immich/uploads/ I can find the uploaded photos back, however, then the storage template is traded in for UUIDs. So instead of \Photos\admin\2025\April\01 I have to navigate to \uploads\fe8eafc3-d3c4-4bd0-89bf-49b97915ddef\38\21 I want either the photos to appear under /photos/... or have the template structure visiblue in /uploads/... Is that possible?
