Just frustrated everything I want to hangs on HexOS getting to a point I can use it as a "prod" environment as well as more apps. I have a small movie/Anime collection I want to port over to the hexOS drives. I could probably do it now since it sounds like we can hook up existing pools? But the app I want to use JellyFin is far too complicated for me to figure out via TrueNAS I don't have the patience to figure out what to do Mainly I don't want to have to configure every little thing. The same goes for ROMM and Steam Headless. I want it to house backups of my ROMMs and my Steam Games so that when I want to downlaod them I can without using bandwidth. I'm using an old Gaming computer as my server (i7 2600k w/ a XFX 290x and 20GB ram 😎 lol) so I can play some games still. Oh the reason I want to slow down on my bandwidth usage because we have multiple people who work from home, and some months I almost reach my data cap. 🥲 But remember the ISPs said "Customers like data caps F* OFF) But the other reason is I also want to move entirely away from windows if I can since I've had enough of them. But to do that I would like all 3 of my computers to sync and I want them to sync locally to HexOS. 😔 So before I move my GPD Win4 to Bazzite I need 🤨 to be able to sync all my data over from the Win4 (which has all my ROMs), And then transition that to Bazzite, and then once that is done I'll be moving my desktop to Bazzite too but the longer I wait on the desktop the better, cause I was dumb and have a 3070 in it. So yeah I just can't wait until HexOS finally says "we're making it official" and "look we have more than 2 apps have fun!"

Not fully correct. Yes SMB protocol is used by Windows, but it is a protocol that's working on Windows, Linux, MacOS (and possibly others). NFS is a different protocol, which was mainly used on Linux as a sharing system, I don't know the exact details on why what is "better", or the history, but it simply put is: a different piece of software and protocol. For compatibility SMB is used, since it's generally more adopted and almost every system is using it (Think about games. Most games work on Windows, not all of them work on Linux or MacOS, but some of them also only work on Linux or MacOS and not on Windows) Plex can be currently installed through the HexOS platform, *other* software cannot, and you need to use the TrueNAS system. You repeated Plex here, so I think you wanted to mention a different piece of software? The interpretation is partly correct. You can install it on the system, however you need to use the TrueNAS interface for this. HexOS will be able to start & stop the software from the interface. So technically you can install it on HexOS, just not "through HexOS". All this said, if you want to use a bit more advanced configuration, you will currently need to use TrueNAS for the settings, but if you just want one system with everything, you can just do this.

So, in the end I have the Dell HBA330, and have written a small guide what I did on PCPartpicker, but that's currently waiting moderation. Once it's published I will post the link here, also for people to see if they also want to build it. Thanks again everyone who has helped here!

Hi all. My $.02 is that there should be a way to echo or display the TrueNAS errors from within the HexOS management GUI. Basically, I have been trying to apply the new update(s) to my system, and it took me forever to realize that they were failing because I didn't assign enough space to my boot drive to download and unpack the update contents.

Personally, I'd vastly prefer that there was ONLY a local interface, and no centralized remote access to everyone's personal data. A remote interface can certainly be useful, but that isn't too difficult or technical to setup with something like tailscale. While I'm sure the HexOS team takes security and privacy very serious, imagine if there was ever a data breech at hexos that gave hackers/bad actors a list of all the home servers they could target, or worse a direct backdoor.

Please don't use an external USB enclosure, this is just asking for trouble, because very often they are not forwarding the drives serial number but are just giving a generic one, which means that Hexos cannot differentiate between drives and will not be able to create a pool or use those drives. Only stick with internal SATA ports and SATA expansion cards to avoid any trouble. A lot of people in here are using Jonsbo cases, which exists in various sizes to accommodate varying amount of drives. A couple of remarks to keep in mind: You need a dedicated drive just for the OS and you cannot use it for anything else. Don't waste a 1TB SSD on this, 16GB is all you need, so go for a low capacity one. With 2 drives Hexos will create a mirrored Pool which cannot be extended, if you want to extended your Pool later on you need 3 drives now to create a RaidZ1 which is extendable. If you go for the 2 drives now, 4 drives in total later, you will have 2 mirrored drives and only the capacity of 2 drives in total Stay away from SMR HDDs. If you decide to go custom built, please post your specs in here as there are some pitfalls which we can help you avoid. 🙂

Hello I currently have an old 2x1TB NAS with regular network access and that's it. I want to get a new NAS with HexOS. I'm thinking about 2 drives for now, but 4 drives finally, so must have 4 HDD slots + SSD/m.2 slot(s). So for example 4x20TB HDD + 2x2TB m.2. I also want something that is small and not a normal size PC case. The question is if it's better to build something myself or just get a regular NAS from Asustor/Ugreen/something else. My main concern is future proofing. Will I have to replace it in 5 years or not if I get the regular NAS. Also also, if I DIY one with the drive requirements I have, will I be limited to a big case or are there some Mini PC cases that would work for me? The budget I have for the NAS (without drives) is 500 USD ish. Thanks for all the answers.! Cheers

My instance of Immich is doing the same thing after I upgraded to 24.10.2.3. I have the same error with the same logs displayed. What is weird is I am getting the same error and logs for my instance of ConvertX as well. Both of these error happened after upgrading from 24.10.2.2 to 24.10.2.3.

Did I miss this somewhere, or is it still not implemented? Considering that we are relying on your website security to protect our systems, I would have considered MFA a priority.

Sorry - missed this bit out. It's a pre-made mini computer. My test rig is a BeeLink SER 7. It's similar to the BeeLink SER 8 just one generation back. It's ideal for my testing at the moment. Booting from a USB attached NVME drive in a USB enclosure, then using 2x 2Tb internal NVME drives for the storage pool.

I have an issue where I cant claim my hexOS server. I had to reinstall my server since I had to change some hardware things, such as MB, and I couldnt take my old boot drive with me, so I backed up all my data and configs and reinstalled the server. But after the reinstall I cant seem to claim it in the command Deck, I can access the TrueNas Scale webconsole with the IP that the server gets, but when the deck tries to look for the server on that specific IP it wont find it, does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Regarding the backup solution you want, perhaps Buddy Backup would fit your need. There isn't too much info about it yet, but it will allow you to backup your data to other servers running HexOS. See attached screenshot from hexos.com. Regarding file parity between different devices, perhaps Syncthing is what you are looking for? You can install that app on your HexOS server. But right now you would have to install it through the TrueNAS UI.

Sorry I blew past this but I mean I couldn't setup the initial datasets as per this video. If the issue is the permissions he talks about later, I didn't try to sync to that because of the dataset error above. Maybe I need to do this out of order?

How were you able to setup the datasets he uses? I get an error when trying to create the Nextcloud dataset. I've no idea how to grant permission to the user or which user it is referring to. the jonsbo n5 is quite the chonker of a case. Despite the large size it is incredibly pingy almost like a giant tuning fork. I ended up using 1 sheet of leftover sound deadening mat i had from working on my car years ago. i could easily have added even more but i was feeling lazy and the one sheet made a world of difference. I used Noico Black 80 mil because my custom car audio system wasn't expensive enough for me to purchase anything higher quality. If i were to buy sound deadening material today it would likely be resonix. I didn't have a system in the case prior to adding the sound deadening but knocking on the individual pieces it was super apparent that the pinging was gone after. I also replaced the screws holding in the backplane with screws with rubber vibration dampeners. the screws that came with the product were too big and i just replaced them with similar looking screws that came with the jonsbo case I honestly have no idea if this made any difference at all. some others on reddit commented that when they added vibration dampeners they were unable to seat their hdds all the way or close the magnetic front cover. Due to that i went and bought what i thought looked the thinnest in hopes i could avoid the issues they had. I can happily confirm i am both able to fully seat my drives and close the magnetic front cover I added 3 extra hdds to my case. i had inserted the drives into my phanteks drive caddies that i had from a previous case. If i didn't already have these i would be curious about trying this the original plan was to drill out some mounting holes for the drive caddies but between my drillbit being too dull to drill through the case and realizing the mounting mechanism is more than just 2 hooks on each side i decided against doing that. A giant unfiltered hole like that would be just begging for bugs to enter. I also considered double sided vhb tape however the drive caddies would be stuck in a location where it would be impossible to remove the drives from if i did that. I didn't even consider screwing down the caddies into the case for the same reason. Originally i was hoping to add the 3 extra hdds to the upper level of the case on the bottom right corner of the case (assume that the mobo io shield is on top left) Theoretically there was enough room there for the drives and the caddies however it blocked access to a few of my mobo sata ports so i had to give up on that plan. i think if you avoid mobos with right angle connectors along its right edge it should be fine and more ideal than my solution. (assuming mobo is matx or smaller) I stuck my drives on the bottom level right under the mobo and next to the psu. it was a stupid tight fit or the cables. Also far from ideal when it comes to airflow. it is sitting directly between the lower level fan and the backplane+main hdd area I was going to just use velcro but as luck would have it i ran out of velcro. Instead i consulted chatgpt to see if there were any alternatives that had less micro wobble and still removable. i was given 2 options velcro alfa lok or 3m dual lock they both are similar but i picked the outdoor rated alfa lock instead because it had faster shipping. my feelings on the product is that it is barely removable. Outside the case i spent a good amount of time and force pre-connecting the both sides of the alfa lok i dont have faith i can get a proper connection between both sides if i had to connect them again while in the case Next part when im less sleepy 😅

Make sure when you are configuring filebrowser that in the "Storage Configuration" section you are adding an additional storage. For mine I simply just added the path: /mnt/HDDs (as shown below) Doing this worked and allowed the browser to launch! I am quite new to TrueNas so this was just trial and error for me. Once the application was launch I was able to connect following the instructions on Installation - File Browser I did run into an issue that for my sub datasets, specifically one for applications. It say I "don't have permission to access this." despite the user settings for all datasets being root. Not sure if anyone else would have some insight on this issue.

Hey, With Ryzen 1000-3000 CPUs you have to disable all the C-states or else the server is constantly freezing, just something to keep in mind

Just make sure to avoid motherboard with realtek nics (network interface cards) To get expandable storage pools they need to be made with at least 3 drives

In case anyone is wondering - It went fine. All just worked with no issues. All I had to do was disable Watch Dog.
