  3. I believe speedking456 gets credit for this one.
  4. Do you have a link to the guide? Tailscale seems good. I'm a bit in a similar sitaution to you :))
  5. Tailscale or Wireguard as a VPN are the safest options. If you want a public domain, so that you can access it from any device, you first need a public domain and a reverse proxy (Nginx Proxy Manager, Traefik, Caddy). However this is pretty much a security risk without hardening, so you likely want to use cloudflare, a good firewall (ditch your ISP router and go for OpnSense or OpenWRT) and MMO Fail2Ban like Crowdsec. There are still other ways to secure your network (VLAN, DMZ etc.). VPN is the quickest with little setup, domain is the more versatile with a loooooot more setup to do to not risk your data.
  6. Hey, Yes you can use your old Synology NAS as the target for a backup, but you cannot install Hexos on it, it can only run the proprietary Synology OS on it. You still need a way to connect from your place to your parents house, this is in your case likely best done by setting up a VPN server (Wireguard or Tailscale) on your parents side. (either in the router or the NAS). Then you just need to setup a rsync task which is running periodically, you find a lot of guides out there on how to do this, for the time being you need to configure this in Truenas and not they Hexos dashboard. It's best to do the initial filling via the local network and only afterwards move the NAS to your parents place for the delta backups.
  7. Thank you! for your quick reply and clearing this up. Could I perhabs use the old Synology 4Bay NAS as a backup machine for ofsite backup? I mean that thing still works. I have no idea if there is the possibility to link HexOS to any other NAS? I will buy a second license anyways since I need it for my parents their own storage but it would be a shame to have the Synology sitting there unused
  8. I'm not saying it is right for your situation but I have been using Tailscale for remote access to Immich and the NAS storage itself. I picked it because someone did a pretty good install guide and posted it. Again, I;m not saying it the best for you. I can say though that for someone who doesn't know squat about TrueNAS or Linux or Docker containers and the like, I can saw it worked first try. I am curious if anyone wants to volunteer some alternatives. I believe Cloudflare is sprinkled throughout the forum as well as the general concept of reverse proxy and port forwarding.
  9. You can't use proton You need a reverse proxy or something like tailscale. A third device not needed
  10. What would be the best way to access the server remotely? I need to have access to some of the drives when I'm abroad. I don't care too much about plex remote, but I hope immich does work remotely. Haven't been able to test this one out properly. I read a bit that you have to do this via vpn possibly. Can I use protonvpn for this? I don't really have a third computer to screenshare with. Just my macbook and the server.
  11. Hey, 1 license is for 1 single server. Your use case would be 2 servers and thus 2 licenses. (because each server needs it own OS to be installed) However buddy backup is not yet available, you can however already today realise this using different ways, which do require a bit of setup. (but still a 2nd Hexos license)
  12. Hello people, after the first announcement last year by Linus i promptly jumped on the opportunity to purchase a license. Now I want to build my storage to retire my synology and do storage properly. I want to put a small PC with a few HDDs to my parents house to back up my storage at home. My parents don't need access to that PC nor do I want them to have any access to that data. Is this what they call the "buddy-backup" for which I need to buy a second license or is there a way to attach a second pc with a few HDDs to my main NAS with that one license? Quasi as a external drive just not attached via USB but over the internet? If that question has already been asked and answered please feel free to delete this or move it, but I was not able to find an answer by searching. Thanks a lot!
  13. Anyone with some useful tips for configuring Immich? It seems a bit slow loading the thumbnails and the images don't seem full quality. I have a mixture of image formats, uploading form iphones, samsung phones, cameras etc. Seems to be different for each one. The server I built is quite powerful, should handle the images transcoding fine with a 3070 and a ryzen 5900x
  14. Yeah the power savings from fiber is nothing to scoff at.

  16. SFP+ to RJ45 are getting hooooot, they are using significantly more power compared to fibre optics.
  17. im always for lower power products. im just afraid of how long itll take the drivers for that nic to be stable the x710 is still more problematic than the x540/550 that every uses

Or low power 10 gbe. https://www.servethehome.com/new-intel-e610-nics-shown-for-low-power-10gbase-t-and-2-5gbe/ It will take some time until we will see the NIC chip in prosumer products. But it is promissing. Watching my low power 10 gbe network speeds while doing nothing 🤣
  19. whenever these darn parts get here holiday weekend = slow shipping 🥲 seems like only my new psu has shipped (old one didn't fit in the new case sadly or have enough sata power)

  22. Hopefully in a few years we have this same conversation about switching over to 40gbe 🤣
  23. 10Gbps is gimmicky for most users around here. If you're not editing directly off the NAS or have a lot of users accessing it, there is very likely no need to get 10Gbps, 2.5 Gbps is more than enough. But it's still fun to watch those high numbers, so if it's worth doing (2.5), it's worth overdoing (10) 😂

I think you are right, but it is still tempting to try a 10 gbe network 😉. But I don't do video editing or things like that. So probably after the first backup my 10 gbe network will do nothing most of the time. For me the upgrade from 1 gbe to 2,5 gbe feels like a major upgrade. And from an energy use perspective 2,5 gbe is more the sweetspot.
  25. Once, you do the initial backup to your new low cost, not yet existing, but already way more thought out that you like to admit , server via buddy backup or ZFS replication task, you will see and notice the full speed. After that, it's not gonna make a huge difference 😂 Also if you want a good GPU for AI or ML, used RTX3090 (non ti) can be bought for 600$/€ and likely delivery the best bang for buck. You're welcome 🙃
  26. 10 gbe definitely sounds niiiiiceeeee. i just have no idea how to take advantage of it
  27. It is nothing to do with HexOS or TrueNAS - you cannot use a Backblaze Personal Computer Backup account to back up a NAS. https://www.backblaze.com/computer-backup/docs/network-attached-storage-nas-devices If you want to use Backblaze to backup a NAS - any NAS - you need the appropriate account: https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/solutions/nas-backup

I am thinking about a small network upgrade. The backbone of my network is already 10 gbe (SPF+). But my main network is still 2,5 gbe. I have a Mikrotik router and 2 Mikrotik switches in a 10 inch rack. I like to add a 10 gbe copper switch. I have already a few devices with a 10 gbe NIC on board. 2,5 gbe is nice, but 10 gbe is the extended version of nice 🙂
